Amongst Union High School’s gym filled with hundreds of students coming from all over the state, one could hear noises ranging from choral readings to musical numbers to comedic improvisations. Such chaos and energy could only mean that the Iowa High School Speech Association’s district contest was taking place.
Last Saturday, Jan. 24, the CFHS speech team boarded a bus early in the morning to head to La Porte City so they could showcase all of their hard work that they’ve prepared for about two months. The school’s speech team sent 17 groups to contest with the goal for each group to receive a Division I rating from the judges in order to advance to State.
The groups that made it to State include “Spring Awakening” - musical theater, “Legally Blonde” - musical theater, “KGHD” - radio, “Peng” - short film, “Pay It Forward” - group mime, “Price of Freedom” - group mime, “Kelly” - group improv, “Norby” - group improv, “Hettle” group improv, “10,000 Cigarettes” - ensemble acting, “Scary Questions” - ensemble acting, “Oreos and Noserings” - ensemble acting, “Lund” - TV news and “I Don’t Want to Talk About It” - readers theater.

Hello, My name is Maisie Johnson and I am the program chair for our Beta Club. I enjoying doing many things which include, FCA, Cheerleading, and of course the wonderful Beta Club. This club has taught me how to get involved and contribute to my school and Manning High Beta will forever be in my heart for that!
Topic: President Barack Obama is praised by some and ridiculed by others; however, he must still serve his purpose of leading the United States of America. In 500 words or less, describe how you will lead the Big “D” Marching Band Auxiliary Drill Team if selected to be an Officer for the 2016-2017 school year.
“Cheerleading is my favorite high school memory”, said senior Molly Dudas. Many of the cheerleaders would agree, it is a privilege and an honor to be a part of the tradition and school spirit that makes STA. The cheerleaders revelle their favorite parts of the long season “This is my second year cheering for the sta basketball team and every season is always a blast! There’s never a dull moment cheering for the best team around with your friends. Can’t wait to try out again for the squad!”,said sophomore Carli Brent. The girls are always encouraging each other to keep cheering even in the worst of loses on and off the court. “Cheering at STA is like having a second family”, said senior Emily Huard. “Being apart of something so uplifting
As a diverse student, in a very low income community I have always been known to standing up for others, as well as for myself. Having this natural drive i found myself taking a huge role in our high school Beta Club. As a natural leader, I was challenged with the opportunity to represent our high school’s Beta Club Chapter while running for North Carolina Beta Secretary. Although I felt experienced as a leader, I was really nervous to get up in front of all of North Carolina and give a speech at the Beta Club convention. Although I was nervous, I opened my mouth, and the words just began to come out. My fears went away, and I addressed everyone on topics of educational improvements and opportunities for all students to succeed. I used this
On the morning of Saturday, October 31st, we had cheer practice. Ms. Perez had brought up the idea of captains for this year's cheer team. All of us thought it was a good idea. So she decided that we would vote today. We were all kind of surprised we were doing it right here and right now. We got to thinking about it and we decided it was smart to do it now because then it would be easier just to get it done and over with.
I have been the president of my school’s Junior Civitian club for 2 years now and I was color guard caption for two years also. I have learned how to become a leader. I also went to Girl State where I learned how to become a better leader. Becoming a leader is challenging, especially in high school, when you want to do what everyone else is doing. I have learned that being a leader you should be fair and treat people as if they are your peers and not lower than you are. As a leader I am the first person their and the last person to leave. I also have made myself available to the people in Junior Civitan and the people on the color guard team. I also have an ambitious attitude, as should ever leader. I will always try to keep everyone cheerful
My orotund voice elevated around the room as I presented the final youth speech to the California State Board of Education. I remember the cheers of my fellow youth advocates as I walked out of the building with poised shoulders and my internal giddiness. Nevertheless, I knew that the time I spent at Californians for Justice was worth it.
I am a volleyball player who was denied eligibility to play varsity volleyball at Thomas County Central High School, because I switched schools sooner than a year ago. I understand that you along with the rest of the GHSA board care about students not taking advantage of switching schools just to be on an eye-catching sports team. As a player, I respect this and thank you for keeping star athletes from taking mine or my team mates’ spots on the team. It is also understandable that you along with other GHSA board members may not think about school systems like ours that continuously have people switching primarily because of the rigor of different school, such as me switching to TCCHS from Thomasville High School Scholars Academy, because I simply could not keep up with the pace and rigor that they teach with. After weighing out both points of view, transfers from any school should be allowed to participate in varsity sports without having to wait a year from the time of transferring to their new school.
The red curtains open to reveal a blinding bright spotlight and a packed arena. Getting to the National Championship an immense amount of preparation. We had two minutes in front of the judges. We put our hands in the middle of our circle. For the last time of the season, we chanted “LHS cheer!”, and then we were off. The crowd was silent with anticipation. The routine felt like second nature and we ended up doing well. We made it to finals and ultimately took fourth place in the nation. It the first time in five years that our team had placed. It was a long journey getting to this point.
Cheerleading is a sport that is very difficult because you have to pick up people, do jumps, tumbling you could get hurt really bad if you don’t do something right. You can cheer at a football game or at competitions, at football games you cheer for the football player and 3nd quarter you do your routine in front of your coach’s and your Family and friends. At competitions you cheer in front of anyone that you don’t even know and in front of judges instead of football teams going against each other your going against other cheer teams to win that big trophies and a jacket its really hard to get those. Did you know cheer was first invented November 2, 1898 and they called it “yell leader”? When you join cheer you become family with your team
So, you have how many kids on your speech team? 65!?! How do you have 65 kids on your team? This question is a common question I am asked by my colleagues and friends on the speech circuit and one that I was posed with again this past weekend. Having a large team is certainly a wonderful situation. We fill a bus (sometimes two buses), practices are lively and busy, and finding an audience to practice in front of is never a problem. A team this sizable requires A LOT of coaching time (each student needs to perform individually), organization, effort, and careful planning. To compensate for the lack of time and multiple myself, I watch film most mornings, coach every day of the school year starting in August until the end of February, and sacrifice sleep (and sometimes my sanity) to do so. While some people might initially think considerable roster numbers guarantees success and makes
Well it’s that time again where I leave for college. Coach I just want to say thank you for everything you did for me. Not only that but thank you for creating district 9 track club, I don’t think you notice how much you change people life with this track club. You give people opportunities they would never get if it wasn’t for your Track club. To some people district 9 may just be a track club ,but to me it’s my second family. Coach, I see all the hard-work and money you put into this this track club. The thing that makes district 9 so special is YOU as the coach you don’t make district 9 about you. You make district 9 about your athletes. I have never once heard you complain about anything you do for us because you do it from the heart and
Freshman Year. I couldn’t believe I was going to be in high school already. I couldn’t believe I was going to be apart of Liberty band. Being apart of the band had been a dream of mine since I was little. I remember the day very clearly, I was at Disneyland, only 8 years old. My sister and I were meeting Tinkerbell and her sister, Periwinkle. The intercom roared out, “Ladies and Gentlemen, all the way from Wisconsin, The Wisconsin Marching Band!” I gasped, my excitement overflowing. “Mommy Mommy! We have to hurry!” We finished saying our goodbyes to Tinkerbell and Periwinkle and as soon as we left, I began running as fast I could. I squeezed my way through trying to see the Band and i somehow had made to the second row to the front. As they were playing their fight song (which is funny because it's our fight song also) i was shocked at how skilled they were, I was mesmerized. I remember turning to my mom. “Mommy that’s gonna be me one day!” she smiled back me, “If you practice, I believe you will make it.” 7 years
The perfect high school does not exist, and it will never exist in this world. But if it could exist, then the perfect high school would have the perfect principal and staff. On the first day of Priority High School, there would be a speech given by the principal. In this speech, they should first make it known that they are honored to be the leader of the school, as they should be. High school is an experience after all, and should have leaders leading it, and should have students who are all bonded through one idea: that they are American.
