Students at Southeast Polk High School have to be to school by 7:50 everyday. This is hard on the students who work late at work or are in other activities and do not get to sleep until a later time. Plenty of students are late all the time to school because they oversleep. I work have worked until 10:00 pm at nights for most of High School and because school starts so early I have been late because I overslept at least 20 times in my high school career. I have quite a few friends that I know do not get off of work until 10:00 pm or 12:00 am. If they work until 12:00 am and get home around 12:30 they would probably get to sleep around 1:00 am but have to wake up at 7:00 am which is only 6 hours of sleep. There are a ton of studies that show
Junior High is a scary thought. You are little and going to school with the big kids. It wasn’t to bad after I got used to it.
In high school, I was very involved with the school’s musical theatre program. I loved to act and sing, and I was pretty good at both, but I never got a part better than being in the ensemble. This was because I was not part of the “privileged” group of students.
“I’m too tired to go to school” This is a very familiar statement heard by parents of teens across the USA. One solution is to have a later school time. Later school times can reduce crashes of teens driving to school each morning. The American Automobile Association says that in the morning teens are not paying enough attention to the road in the morning because they are not fully awake yet. Later school times can help with lots of other stuff too.
On average in today’s society most teens don’t like going to school that early in the morning. To have to wake up so early when they only get about seven hours of sleep, to have students be coming into school at 7:30AM or maybe even earlier in some other schools, is not right. Students need to have time at night to get work done, not only schoolwork but also non-schoolwork. Needless to say, the school schedule for high school students needs to be changed and be made where they go in later. That way they get their work done and get enough sleep because without much sleep students will not be getting high grades. A health survey that the University Health Center administered showed them that one in four students say that lack of sleep has
When the end of summer approached, I believed I was prepared of what 7th grade was going to throw at me. I was wrong. I had tons of homework. School overall was stressful. The best way to solve this problem was to not procrastinate, it was my main goal this school year. Reducing the amount of time playing on electronics would not only make my school life less stressful, but making my parents happier about me not playing as much as I usually do.
In the United States just over 90 percent of high school students are sleep deprived. Being sleep deprived increase the chance of suicide attempts by 58 percent. It also increase the change of students to be obese and have diabetes in their adulthood. About 28 percent of students fall asleep during their first hour causing them to have bad grades. Starting school early is also endangering students who drive. They have a higher chance of getting into a car crash because school is starting early. For example, in Chesterfield County, VA high schools start at 7:20am compared to Henrico County, VA where they start at 8:45am, Chesterfield County has a higher rate of teen’s accidents
“ Crack, Boom, Pop!” “ The ceiling is falling, the ceiling is falling, oh my gosh run!” We get out quickly and safely. This is literally our school! The principal asked us what changes we would want in our school. We said we need lots of new things and changes in our school. It is old and run down. We need jerseys for our athletics team, A Floyd County Buffaloes Dodge ball team, and an entire new look to our school.
There are many programs that schools are trying to build to help students achieve more in life, specifically the Office of Metropolitan Impact at University of Michigan- Dearborn. The main goal of this program is to; increase motivation to go to college, post secondary and/or enter a selected career. Another goal is to, increase readiness in students who are about to enter college or a career. They also want to encourage their students to develop a long-term goal so they have something to work towards and accomplish.
A study was done by a middle school in Florida about what time they go to bed. 50% of the kids said they go to bed around 8:30-10:30, 38% said they go to bed between 11:00-12:00 and the other 12% said they go to bed in the early morning. But they also asked them if they are ever tired when they come to school and around 95% of the kids said that they are tired when they show up to school in the morning. Like I mentioned before schools should start later in the morning because if you're tired, you can't pay attention that well. But there are some good things about school arrivals and releases. One of them is if students are tired in the morning, by 10:00 like I mentioned before there brains are fully working so they might not be tired anymore and they are ready to learn.
Now that I have half a year in highschool, I would like to tell the incoming freshman some things they may want to now for the upcoming school year.
Most of a high school is a blur at this point. I can barely remember anything from ninth grade and only bits and pieces from tenth grade. There are certain memories, however, that I can see clearly with perfect detail - even though they are pretty small moments in time. Sitting in Western Civilization when Mr. DeFusco asked me if I was “okay” with being in Advanced Placement United States History the following year. Jumping up and down in Mrs. Leister’s room surrounded by jittery sophomores because we were about to take the Advanced Placement United States History Exam that morning in May. Writing a snarky comment on a quiz on Iran’s government in Advanced Placement Comparative Government with Mr. Schwenk. There are other memories that are perfectly vivid, but these are the most significant. Why these memories in
High school is something we all look forward to as kids in middle school. In high school there will be many new things, but a few couldl stay the same. There are things I expect and look forward to about high school, but there are also things I dread.
High school is one of the most important lessons that any kid can have. High school has taught me many important lessons for my future. I learned how to have responsibility, and not care what people think.
Time is the best teacher and my experience in high school is an example of this. When I first started high school I was adjusting to the new responsibilities, freedoms, social situations, and life in general. As a result this made my school life much more difficult, having to balance all aspects of my life in a way that was previously unknown to me. The uneasiness of this time can be reflected in my freshman grades, however as year after year went by I started ironing out the various chinks in my life. I started studying differently, focusing more in class and, perhaps most importantly, I started going to sleep earlier. These changes came unintentionally, I was unaware I was setting myself up for a better future. These small adjustments, when
Think about it, it’s 11 o’clock at night you're still doing some lab report, when you finally go to sleep at 1 you realise you will only be getting around 4 hours of sleep. I’m sure many people have been in this situation at least once, and at this point didn’t you just wished that school can be cancelled tomorrow or at least start later. According to the national sleep foundation, students,” need about 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night to function best. Most teens do not get enough sleep — one study found that only 15% reported sleeping 8 1/2 hours on school nights.” This study demonstrates that students are sleep deprived, which might be caused by early start time .Because of early start time and sleeping late at night students are sleep deprived, according to Russell Rosenberg, “early school start times are a
