Each religion explains its existence in their own unique ways and implement it to people’s lifestyle. The film, 330 Million Gods, seeks to understand the Hinduism way of explanation. This documentary mainly focuses on the Hindu concept of divine, religious practices, and the stages of life. Also, the documentary illustrates how Indian lifestyle blends into its religion in the big cities – city of Benares and rural areas – village of Bhith Bhagwanpur. Hinduism is a polytheistic religion that is very much a part of the people in India and Nepal. It has over 900 million followers worldwide and it is considered one of the oldest religions in the world, dating back many thousands of years. This religion is split into many different branches because of their belief in many gods and goddesses. Each branch worships a different god that they view as “supreme above all others.” Granted that they had a great leader, Mahatma Gandhi, they were able to change the world, and more specifically the United States. His philosophical ideas inspired our country to fight for equality. But in order to understand this better, it is important to have a deeper understanding of the Hinduism beliefs.

Hinduism is a religion that is seen as having many different gods in their beliefs. It has been a debate whether or not the religion is monotheistic or polytheistic. It is true that they worship other gods such as Indra the god of air, Shiva and Brahma. These are all gods in which the religion worship in many different ways. In particular ways, Hinduism is the oldest religion in the world; or at least there are aspects of Hinduism that have extended to today from many thousands of years ago. It is not easy defining Hinduism for it has boundless assortments of practices and beliefs found within it. To make it a bit easier to comprehend, they but meaning behind the first part of the word Hinduism, which is Hindu. Hindu can be a cultural political and geographical term. To make this religion a bit more of a mystery, Hinduism does not have a set founder, a particular scripture, or a set teaching. The religion believes itself to be timeless and having existed. There are many prime individuals teaching different philosophies that have extended throughout Hinduism’s history.

I decided to watch 330 Million Gods to gain more insight on the rituals and beliefs in Hiduism, which is the philosophy of life. In the beginning of the film, there were millions of people comes together and bath at the hole river as part of their religious beliefs. Once a year, school celebrate Saraswati, Goddess of art and learning, by offering food, flowers, and a change of clothes as if the goddess is a special guest. Also, ritual was performed in order to breath life into the goddess. Nevertheless, the people understand that the god status is being replace every year, but they believe that the painted clay god is a symbol of communication or represent of divinity. Religion is a combination of beliefs, ceremonies and set of rules used to follow god or group of gods. I myself belong from a monotheistic religion, known as Islam. Islam is second largest religion in the world. Islam is revealed through Mohammad as a prophet of god. Quran is the holy book of Islam. The Quran was first revealed to Prophet Mohammad, being a messenger of god he started telling those teachings to the people of Mecca and Madinah. After that, people started to convert to Islam. I always wanted to know that how Hinduism is a monotheistic religion because Hindus believe in so many gods. I also wanted to know that why Hindu temples have a bell at their entrance. That’s why I choose Hinduism as my experience project.

Brahma is the god of creation. In today’s world, he is the least worshipped god in India. There are only two temples in all of India dedicated to him (Brahma). Brahma has a unique look, with four heads and four arms. The second god, Vishnu, is the god of preservation. Thus far in creation, he has been said to be incarnated nine times. Worshippers believe that he will incarnate one last time near the end of the world. Similarly, to what Paul thought of Jesus, “Like any major god, Vishnu is involved in a number of colorful stories which illustrate his virtues as the protector of cosmic order” (Vishnu). Vishnu is uniquely depicted by having blue skin, and four arms. In his four hands, he holds objects representing what he is dependable for. Shiva, the last god, is the god of destruction. In Hinduism, destruction is considered necessary for new life forms to appear. Shiva is portrayed by his blue face and white body, three eyes, and four arms.

The god Vishnu is the creator, and Shiva is the destroyer. One is not looked upon as better than the other. This shows the ultimate realism that the Hindu culture possesses. These are not the only gods in Hindu culture. There are many others and all have special skills and talents. The gods themselves also give birth to the idea of avatars, or the form of god when he or she comes to earth.

In contrast to majority of devout religions, Hinduism participates in the worship of many gods – thus making it a polytheistic religion consisting of a Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. The Brahma is the The Creator, and a member of the Hindu Trinity. Brahma intimately creates everything in the universe. In addition, Vishnu maintains the balance and harmony of the universe.
