The musical quality and message that hip hop sends is and will always be ambivalent but the cultural and social history will always be fascinating. Hip hop has indirectly started social justice movements. But unfortunately, hip hop also has contributed to the violence, sexualization of women, and misogyny of the world. Hip hop is without substance, it is a jumble of ideas and genres. The racism and discrimination that surrounds the african american community, especially the people who live in areas such as Harlem or the Bronx, was originally must worse especially before and around the time hip hop was gaining popularity, hip hop started a social justice movement that counteracted these views. For example, most african american youths joined gangs when they hit their teenage years. When hip hop hit the streets it was an alternative to joining gangs and it saved many youths from the life of violence they were heading down. Another instance of hip …show more content…

Misogyny, violence, the sexulaization of women, and glorification of the ‘thug’ life has perpetrated through the good that hip hop was doing. In some instances, hip hop is seen as a kind of rebellion, equal to rock and roll in the 1950s. African Americans are viewed as weak if they do not follow the set standards hip hop has created. When you think of hip hop, you may picture the ‘bling’ that rappers wear or do rags; those are the types of standards that have been set. Social etiquette has also been put into place and it is harmful to african american youths. An additional case of the violence and the misogyny that hip hop displays is that many of the songs talk of violence. I, and yourself would find it hard pressed to find a hip hop song that doesn’t talk of violence or sexualization of women. Those ideas seem to be the main topics of hip hop songs. These ideas are a poor example of behavior that needs to be exhibited to be a productive member of
