History of The Tampa Bay Buccaneers As an NFL Team When you hear the phrase ‘Tampa bay Buccaneers’, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? For me it’s the sound of cannons firing, celebrating the score of a touchdown in Raymond James Stadium located in Tampa Florida. This is where my love for an NFL team blossomed into a die-hard fan. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers first joined the National Football League in 1976 in the NFC Central division, later changing to the NFC South division. The NFL today is composed of the American Football Conference and the National Football Conference. Each conference consists of teams that claim a division. The AFC consists of the AFC North, AFC East, AFC South, and the AFC west. The NFC consists of the NFC North, NFC East, NFC South (the Buccaneers division), and the NFC West. So what exactly is a Buccaneer? A Buccaneer defined by dictionary.com ‘is an individual that raided Spanish colonies and ships along the American coast in the second half of the 17th century’ (Buccaneer). This influenced the naming decision, which was decided through a name-the-team contest as the “Buccaneers”, later shortened and known to the fans as the “Bucs”. For as long as I’ve been a fan I have always known them as the Bucs and rarely would I hear them referred to as the buccaneers.
