Outline I. Thesis statement: On the other hand, the author seems to be missing some important points and there some misconceptions presented in the topic as he wanted to prove his point of taking extra hours of sleep regardless of people’s different lifestyles. II. Counter argument: Hodgkinson, the writer, offers some good points in his article that must be considered. A. Indeed researchers think that giving teens an extra hour of sleep will improve their performance in exams. i. Brain scans suggest that sleep improves brain power. ii. Study made by researchers on the two groups of mice is actually convincing regarding the fact that sleep facilitates long term memory. B. The …show more content…
False assumptions: Unfortunately, there are a number of false assumptions made by the writer. A. Assuming that early rising is a myth and that no one ever gets up early willingly as we are all night owls is wrong as there are many successful early risers in the world as ex-American President Barrack Obama and Richard Branson (a British billionaire and a business man) who prefer to be implementers and stay active. B. Despite the advantages of extra hour sleep or taking a nap, it seems that the author overlooked the disadvantages as sleep inertia developed due to taking long naps or having to go to school late than early which would require schools to also end later besides cutting into beneficial extracurricular activities and sports. IV. Problematic evidence: Another point of weakness in the article is related to the weak evidences oftenly used by the author. A. There is a few insufficient and unclear information in the article like when talking about the research made on teenagers in a hundred British school but didn’t mention who had done the research or what was the conclusion observed. Also when the author mentioned the study made by Andrew Young who is a diplomat as well as the study itself made on African sparrows making it all seems to be ambiguous and non-related to the
Most students when the wake up feel drowsy or tired because they have to go to school before 8:00 am. Schools should have later start times for many reason some include that they just need more sleep and that if they do not get enough sleep it could be dangerous.
In source two "Wake Up Calls", it mentions"Sleep-deprived teens participate in more violent and property crime than other teens", from the information we can gather from the text it means that without the proper sleep these teens can get aggressive and cause behavioral issues during school.Just to mention more sleep can also improve students grades, but at this moment others may question how can taking a rest improve their academic skills, well it`s simple really when you get a full 8 hours of sleep you won`t be tired so you won`t feel the need to sleep and you`ll be more focused at your work. Also with one hour pushed back it will help many teens prevent tardies in source one "Should School start Later?",there is a girl named ,Jilly Dos Santos, who would struggle to get to school on time but always comes tardy. If school started an hour later then teens who have a really hard time getting ready like her can get to school on time ,that is why school should be pushed back so others can get prepared and get to school on
Typically, people enjoy receiving an extra hour of sleep, even an extra five minutes of sleep. Teens are just one group of people who enjoy sleep. Unfortunately, teens are unable to obtain the correct number of hours per night. Later school start times would be beneficial because the schools would see an impact on attendance, increased school performance, and based on several studies, students would receive the recommended amount of sleep. The psychological effects would greatly outweigh the negative effects caused by an early start time. Benefits of a later start time include, better health, improved grades and teens reaching the recommended amount of sleep per night. Downfalls of starting school later would be transportation issues, coddling
Students who have had more sleep are guaranteed to have a better school performance. For example improved attendance, less sleeping in class, standardized test scores and academic performance have improved, and last but not least less truancy. Students who
In addition to the lack thereof evidence, this article is scattered as can be; making the reading experience quite confusing and unenjoyable at times. Annika Hagley’s writing style is quite abstract, at times causing seemingly choppy
In the article Teachers,Students and Sleep, author Dave Stuart address the effects of different qualities of sleep have on students. Stuart covers the causes for poor sleep and the consequences this can have. The author repeatedly references the work of Harvard graduate Maria Konnikova, along with Shawn Stevenson who has a bachelor's degree, thus they appear to be reliable sources. Stuart cover the negative effects of artificial light close to sleep, and the many positive effects of regularity in other activities on the sleep cycle. Dave Stuart makes his readers reevaluate how important sleep is.
Another reason is that teens would show significant improvements in school performance. They get more sleep to stay up and pay attention during class.Students who reported higher grades had more sleep time and earlier bedtimes on school nights than those with lower grades.Furthermore, students with lower grades also went to bed on average 2.3 hours later on the weekends than on school nights, compared to A/B students, who went to bed 1.8
Also there were multiple occasions where it felt like the article was lacking important information or where Cappelli could have backed up what he said by supplying facts and citing the source. Cappelli also failed to cite some of the facts he did have, leading you to question the validity of the information provided. Also the language, that Cappelli uses is perfect for this article, as his choice of words is precise thoughtful. The words he chose made it an easy read for readers of all levels. Cappelli masterfully set up a very persuasive piece.
For this purpose citing from another article, the information that has been given could havebeen misleading and incorrect. The article was not basic on facts with supportive evidence. Therefore, the author could have done more research to create an article that had more supportive evidence with credibility
The screeching sound of your alarm clock goes off early in the morning. The last thing you want to do, after not getting much sleep, is get up and go to school. Research shows that the extra few hours of sleep, for teens, improves their their health and performance in school. There are definite advantages associated with starting school later in the morning for high school and middle school students.
Teenagers that get more sleep tend to do better academically in schools. To start off, when students get more hours of sleep, the classroom environment improves. Students become more alert, be less moody, and tend to sleep less in class (“What’s the Big Deal?”). Secondly, when teens get less sleep, learning,
By forcing children to wake at 8am to go to school means that their sleep duration and efficiency is compromised. In the US research shows that most teenage accidents occur before noon. Vigilance and accuracy are at naturally low levels in the morning because melatonin levels are still high so their academic work suffers because of an inability to concentrate – for totally natural reasons.
Later classes lead to better grades. Students who said they got poor grades reported getting twenty-five minutes less sleep a night and going to bed an average forty minutes later than kids with good grades did. Cognitive function and psychomotor skills are closely related to sleep, and numerous studies have correlated sleep loss with significant decreases in children and adolescents’ performance (Wolfson 1). Studies of middle school and high school students reported that more sleep, earlier bedtimes, later weekday rise times, and less daytime sleepiness were associated with better grades in school and greater motivation to do one’s best in school (Wolfson 2).
One hour more of sleep can save millions of suicidal and stressed kids. According to Finley Edwards “ just 1 h less of weekday sleep was associated with significantly greater odds of feeling hopeless, seriously considering suicide, suicide attempts, and substance use.”(1) This quote shows that if wress to much about grades and their personal life. Less sleep just ae started school later there would be less suicide casualties. Students stdds more stress and unwanted problems.
Thesis Statement: Sleeping is a positive attribute, which gives you a better chance to be productive and live a healthier lifestyle.
