Think of all the stories that you heard when you were younger. The stories of battles with monsters, far away places and interesting people with strange super-powers. Now imagine that one day all of that becomes a reality. In the story Hollow City, author Ransom Riggs introduces the new world of Jacob Portman. Jacob’s life becomes a real life fairy tale when the stories his grandfather told him are discovered to actually be real. Jacob struggles with accepting how he is different and through the course of the story he learns to accept that and use it as a strength instead of a weakness. This can be symbolized by the bird that Ms. Peregrine is trapped inside of. Ransom Riggs uses the bird to symbolize Jacob’s struggles with his newfound peculiarity …show more content…
The adventure that the children and Jacob go on in the book is to find someone to help turn Ms. Peregrine human again. But in the end the real success of the journey for Jacob was to discover how powerful he really is and how important he is to the world of peculiars. Jacob always thought that his only power was to be able to detect where a hollow is and predict what it would do. But, in the very end of the book he discovers he can actually control them. After conquering telling his dad what is actually the matter with him, Jacob discovers his power with his newly found confidence, “ ‘No, Dad. I’m peculiar.” Then I hung up the phone, and speaking a language I didn’t know I knew, I ordered the hollow to stand. Obedient as a shadow, it did”. (Riggs pg.296). The theme of Hollow City isn’t as obvious as most books because the true theme doesn’t really come up until the very very end as Jacob witnesses his powers. In conclusion, the symbol of the bird and the theme of acceptance of differences are closely related. The bird in this story is what traps Ms. Peregrine inside of it and forces the children to try and survive by themselves as the try to rescue her. The theme develops as Jacob gains more confidence in his powers and in himself up until the very in when his powers grow even
Jacob vs. Therapist- he is actually the cause of all his problems. He is the one who sends the hollow on his grandfather, kidnaps Ms. Peregrine, and makes all the external conflicts arise.
Hiding in plain sight, belittled for their differences, and ridiculed for trying to be normal, the peculiar children are outcasts of society. In the present, we see these peculiarities as gifts. In the 19th century, however, these gifts are seen as nothing more than unfortunate curses. Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children is about an adolescent boy named Jacob whose grandfather died in a rather obscure way. This book revolves around Jacob’s grieving process as he searches for answers about his grandpa’s death. While traveling to his grandfather’s childhood home, Jacob finds a little more than he anticipates during his expedition. In this journal I will be evaluating, questioning and predicting.
When first beginning to read this novel one would think that Jacob has a very average life but in actuality he has a very extraordinary and peculiar life ahead. Jacob starts off as a young boy greatly proud of his grandfather and his accomplishments. His grandfather tells him he fought off monsters and that he lived on a very strange island filled with very strange and peculiar children. He even had old yellowed photos of these children using their astonishing talents.

The monsters had killed his grandfather and on the scene Jacob saw the monster that killed him retreating into the woods. The sight had scared Jacob’s life. After sifting through his grandfather's belongings Jacob figured out that he needed to go the house his grandfather had grown up in Wales. Once he was there, he went to the house and it was old and abandoned. He then noticed a girl and followed her through a tunnel and when he came out it was 1940. Jacob followed the girl back to the house where it was and full of peculiar children. He grew close with all the kids and the head of the house, Miss Peregrine until his life changed. He realized that he was peculiar himself because he could see the monsters. Miss Peregrine and all of the children needed Jacob to stay so he could protect them. Along the way, Jacob killed a monster and was on the hunt for another which had captured Miss Peregrine. Jacob and Emma, the girl he chased, eventually killed him and got Miss Peregrine back but she could not change. She had the ability to change back and forth from a human to a hawk and now
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is a horror young adult literature written by Ransom Riggs. It tells Jacob Portman’s story who followed clues that lead him to a house for refugees on the Cairnholm Island off the coast of Wales, where his grandfather used to stay during the Second World War back in the 1940s. The Cairnholm Island itself only had one phone and was powered with generators that shut off at 10 pm everyday, foreshadowing the fact that Jacob would go back in time later on. The peculiar children all lived with Miss Peregrine in a ‘time loop’, created by Miss Peregrine herself. Because of this, the children didn’t age; everyday they repeated September 3rd, 1940 over and over again. For seventy years they had stayed on that day, although their experience of it is continuous, thus they were able to remember what they did yesterday, although other things remained the same. Habits may be boring, but it was key for their safety. Monsters, called the hollowgasts, were hunting down these peculiar children. By being in the
When first beginning to read this novel, the reader may think that it is about Abraham Portman and his life, but in actuality it is about Jacob’s experiences with Miss Peregrine and the peculiar children. As a child, Jacob is told stories of his grandpa’s childhood and the children that he met. Grandpa Portman also tells Jacob about the horrible monsters that he had to battle. As Jacob grows up, he stops believing the stories so Abraham stops telling them.
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness… it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing behind us…”
Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children, by Ransom Riggs, is a thrilling and adventurous journey that takes place in Cairnholm, Wales. The story takes the reader into the life of Jacob Portman and his journey to discover an overwhelming mystery that started after the death of his grandfather, Abe Portman. Jacob was already at a depressed state during the loss of his grandfather, and the loss of his grandfather sent him tumbling even farther towards an enormous whirlpool of emotions, questioning, and uncertainty. These emotions later develop Jacob into a new character and personal achievement in Jacob, one that gives him an inner sense of pleasure and need. In the loss of his own grandfather, Jacob develops an urgent sense
Jacob falls into a depression and his psychiatrist tells him to visit the island where his grandfather grew up. He flies to Cairnholm Island with his father where they find Miss Peregrine’s home. There, Jacob
In contrast, Jacob has spent most of his ‘ordinary’ life listening to his grandfather’s ‘fairy tales’ of mysterious children who can levitate, become invisible, and play host to a swarm of bees. Jacob is about to experience just how extraordinary his life could be… Ransom Riggs expertly crafts eerie anticipation and build-up throughout the story. It is slow, but doesn’t at all drag. Cairnholm reminded me a little of Shutter Island and that’s how I pictured it – perfectly average, in a way, but tinged with a sense of something not quite right. Although you might first assume that Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is a horror novel, it is neither horror nor a thriller, but instead a spectacular, bizarre mystery. A highlight of the novel for me was watching everything unravel and become clear to Jacob as well as myself. Who is Miss Peregrine? What happened to the orphanage? What part does Abe play? Halfway through the story, these questions begin to be answered, and it takes us to a world of fantasy and folklore involving the
The book Miss Peregrine?s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs is about Jacob Portman growing up hearing about his grandfather, Abe Portman, telling him fanaticizing stories about kids with powers. Eventually Jacob witnesses his grandfather?s death. He had an acute stress reaction and his psychiatrist concludes that the best way to get over his condition is to travel to the island and go to the place of his grandfather?s stories and see that it is a normal place and come to grips with reality.
Furthermore the problems in the story are that Jacob's grandfather dies and he needs to decrypt the message that his grandfather gave him just before he died , and he puts the message and the stories that his grandfather told him and put them together and then got cairnholm , an island that is located close to wales a small country west of England. That is the island that his grandfather met all these peculiar children when he was running away from nazis. When he gets there he asked people if they knew a miss peregrine and they turned him down and was on his own from there
Jacob was a kid that was in love with his grandfather but his grandfather was “crazy”. His grandfather died by a monster that is what Jacob saw. So Jacob went to an island that his grandfather said there was a house ther of peculiar children. So Jacob went to look for it with some friends and they found it but it was
