The Holocaust was one of the world’s darkest hours, a mass murder conducted in the shadows of the world’s most deadly war. The Holocaust also known as Shoah, means a systematic, bureaucratic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of approximately six million Jews during the WWII by German Nazi. Adolf Hitler the leader of Nazis, who afraid Jews would take power over Germans; also, many Germans felt they were mistreated by the lost so Jews were like a scapegoat from the previous war lose so they can treat them inhumanely (“The Holocaust”). in Europe had harsher persecutions that led to murder. Over six million people were killed during this time. These deaths define two-thirds of European Jewry, and one-third of all world Jewry.

When you think of the concentration camps of the Holocaust you most likely think of Auschwitz. Auschwitz was the main center for the death of the Jews during the Holocaust. 1.1 million people died

Imagine being pried away from your family. Not only that, but being left at the concentration camps, knowing that you are about to face the dreaded word “death”. Concentration camps broke people’s hearts and changed them forever. They had to encounter many terrifying and petrifying medical experiments. Alongside that, the so called “concentration camps” were basically almost becoming, or were, actual death camps. The things that they had to endure were heartbreaking and agonizing. They were starved from the moment that they got there until the end. If they were lucky, their concentration camp would’ve been liberated by the Allies. Most were not so lucky. During the Holocaust, many different concentration camps were built that were to change the lives of people forever.

Auschwitz Birkenau was the largest death camp during the Holocaust. Auschwitz is located in a Poland city called Oswiecim. The Germans construction of Auschwitz Birkenau began in April 1940. 1.1 million people were sent to Auschwitz and 200,000 of those 1.1 million survived the Holocaust. The people who survived the Holocaust found a new life in modern day to day.

In only six years, two-thirds of an entire race, plus millions more, were shot, gassed, or starved to death. Anyone who was deemed “racially inferior or politically dangerous” was sent to one of many in the camps system. Among these groups were the physically or mentally handicapped, Jehovah’s Witnesses, homosexuals, Jews, Gypsies, Poles and Soviet prisoners of war, and Communists (Berenbaum par. 1-2). Millions of innocent people were sent to camps where they were killed or forced to work for the German cause until they died.

Inmates resembled skeletons and were so weak they were unable to move. The smell of burning bodies was ever present and piles of corpses were scattered around the camp. However, you could be “saved” from the crematoria to be used as test subjects to cruel experimentation and used as lab rats for any experiment the scientists wanted to conduct. Later in the war, extermination camps were built. These were specialized for the mass murder of Jews using Zyklon B to ensure a painful, long, and torturous death. The bodies would then be thrown into the fire and all clothes, teeth, and shoes would be sent to pursue the German war front. At max efficiency, 20,000 people would be killed in the gas chambers a day. As the red Army approached near to liberate the Jews in concentration and extermination camps, SS officers sent prisoners on a death march across hundreds of miles, where they ran with no food or water, no matter the weather, until they reached the closest camp. Sometimes as I’m learning about World War II, I wonder whether the Japanese prison camps were better, worse, or just as bad as Nazi concentration camps and why did Germans treat Americans better than the Japanese did? I chose this topic, because not many people look into the Japanese war camps as much as they did with the Nazi concentration camps. I thought about what happened in those camps that differed from German concentration camps and which was worse. That’s why I chose this topic to learn about.

The holocaust was the persecution of six million Jews by the Nazi regime in 1933. The Nazis believed the Jews were a threat to the German Community and their goal was to eliminate all the Jews in Europe. Adolf Hitler was the leader of this devastating tragedy however, he didn't make this happen all by himself. Hitler had help from Germans, non-Germans, the German government, Nazi Party officials, and the military who all played a part in the holocaust.

The Holocaust was a very difficult and heart wrenching time period. This tragic event occurred because Adolf Hitler blamed the Jewish religion for Germany’s corruption. Hitler kept many Jews in camps and put millions to death by gassing them or rather poisoning them. Hitler’s deadly camps were mainly located in Germany during the second World War yet took place all over Europe.(around 1933-1945)
