Further controversy about authorship springs from the differing styles of the two long narrative poems, indicating they were composed a century apart, while other historians claim only decades –the more formal structure of The Iliad is attributed to a poet at the height of his powers, whereas the more colloquial, novelistic approach in The Odyssey is attributed to an elderly Homer.
Homer enriched his descriptive story with liberal use of simile and metaphor, which has inspired a long path of writers behind him. His structuring device was to start in the middle–in medias res– and then fill in the missing information via remembrances.
The two narrative poems pop up throughout modern literature: Homer’s The Odyssey has parallels in James Joyce’s Ulysses, and his tale of Achilles in The Iliad is echoed in J.R.R. Tolkein's The Fall of Gondolin. Even the Coen Brothers’ film O Brother, Where Art Thou? makes use of The Odyssey.
Other works have been attributed to Homer over the centuries, most notably the Homeric Hymns, but in the end only the two epic works remain enduringly his.
A sketchy figure by the name of Homer is given credit for the two great epic poems of ancient Greece. The Odyssey and The Iliad influenced Greek culture, education, and morality. Little is known about Homer and many scholars question whether he existed at all. (Encarta) Some say two different unknown authors wrote the two poems. (Britannica) Others say that many oral poets were responsible for the finished products. (Britannica) In this report I will discuss the theories that support the existence of an author named Homer. I will present the theories concerning his place of origin and those concerning the century he was likely to have lived in. I will also discus the artifacts
Many have deemed Homer and Hesiod the “founding fathers” of Greek epic poetry and philosophical writings. Both writers’ careers flourished around 8th century B.C, and were immense influences in the world of Greek philosophy. Hesiod focuses on more traditional origins of life for his stories and ensures that the creation of the world and its rulers are embodied in his works. Homer has been considered one of the most influential philosophical writers for centuries by recognized philosophers. He wrote about principles in battle, governance, counsel, sports, the home and life in general that the Greeks looked to in praise. While both of the authors were similar in writing style, they differ vastly in the messages of their poems.
Homer is remembered as one of the greatest individuals to have ever lived and the present day society contains a great deal of concepts that he discussed. His poems have served as inspiration for many individuals who succeeded him and continue to trigger intense feelings in people who come across them. Although the time period that he lived in made it difficult for historians to get actively involved in discussing his life, there are numerous accounts regarding the man's existence. It is actually impossible for one to relate to the poet's life without addressing several stories concerning his background and the attitudes that he adopted.
The Odyssey is a folk epic poem that picks up at the end of another folk epic poem titled The Iliad. Homer, who is said to be a blind poet, has been credited with writing both of these works, however it is believed that the stories of The Iliad and The Odyssey were told verbally for many centuries and Homer happened to be the one who took the opportunity to write them down. Due to it being written centuries ago, The Odyssey uses classical diction that seems odd in modern-day language. The diction used in The Odyssey presents a laudatory tone throughout the poem.
The Odyssey, by Homer, has a large range of stories in it. However, three stories of his show specific archetype proficiently and repeatedly.
The Odyssey, written by Homer, is an ancient tale filled with adventure, some sadness and much hope. These emotions are driven by the interaction between the characters in the story. Analyzing the many different relationships throughout this book will allow a deeper understanding of the love and sacrifice that prevailed.
The Odyssey by Homer is a phenomenal story that was written about two thousand years ago. The main character, Odysseus, is trying to get home from a voyage that lasted about ten years. The reasoning? On his way home, he and his sailors stopped on an island to get needed supplies. He and his crew ended up interacting with the cyclops named Polyphemus. That is where there long journey began. The Odyssey exemplifies the ideal assumption of an epic story with its use of writing, the hero himself, and use of foreshadowing.
The Odyssey is standard in almost every Freshmen English class across the United States. The Odyssey was wrote in 8th Century BCE by an author named Homer. The Odyssey is an epic poem which tells the adventure of Odysseus’s adventure home. This book is full of action and adventure but can also make the reader feel many other emotions. Homer is a very descriptive writer and throughout the book as people read they can visually see what is happening in their imagination . There are three main reasons why teens should read The Odyssey; it teaches us about the human condition, it is a very exciting read and it has universal themes.
The proof for such a theory comes from the diversity of narrative style, ethics, vocabulary, theology, geographical perspective, and written construction across the two epics, yet there is still much mystery to this day. My informed viewpoint on Homer and the epics written is that “Homer” was likely a few people, 2 – 3, who over time wrote down the stories they heard and made them fit together and passed it on. Then the last person gathered up all the previous peoples works formed two large epic poems, made up of both fact and fiction.
Most believe that Homer was a man, however other think that he was a group of individuals, and an even smaller group believe that Homer was a woman. His birthdate is also debated frequently. His birth date ranges from 750 BCE to 1200 BCE. Greek historian Herodotus, commonly referred to as “the father of history”, places Homer’s birth date at 850 BCE. The location of Homer’s birth is also disputed. Possible contenders are Ionia, Smyrna, the coast of Asia Minor, or the island of Chois. Most of Homer’s aspects are derived from his works. For example, Homer is thought to be blind based on a blind poet named Demodokos which was interpreted as Homer referencing his own life, leaving many to believe Homer was blind as well. These references are the only outlook into Homer’s
In ancient times, before the written word, people were entertained with stories told in poetic form about strong men and their adventures. These stories were preserved in epic poems which told of valiant men with supernatural abilities, great courage, and loyalty, and who risked their own lives to save others and preserve peace. Beowulf, written in Old English around 1000 A.D. by an anonymous author, and set in Denmark around 700 – 1000 A.D., and the Odyssey, written by Homer around 700 B.C., and set in Greece after the Trojan War (1334 B.C.), are excellent examples of epic poems. Elements of epic poems include heroes with extraordinary abilities and accomplishments, encounters with mythical creatures, and adventures in the underworld. Although
The stories told in the Iliad and Odyssey are based on stories handed down over several generations, for they preserve (as we have seen) memories of an already quiet far distant past. The two pomes show clear connection in their language and style, in the manner in which their incidents presented, and in the combination of agreement with level, which distinguish their creation.
Homer wrote one of the first adventure stories known as The Odyssey. The story is written in the form of an epic poem and has over 12,000 lines. It was written around 2,000 years ago, but there is only speculation on when the actual story takes place. These are well known facts, but most readers do not notice how the work exemplifies epic heroes, the use of language, or the use of foreshadowing.
The Iliad is a story of rages of Achilles and the War of Troy. Thanks to the techniques of the author, Homer, The Iliad is very colorful, romantic, and it makes the readers imagine the ancient Greeks and their times of war. Homer is believed to be the author of epics other than the Iliad, although their authorship remains uncertain. Historian believes that Homer probably lived in the eighth century, B.C.1 (Discovering World History). However, there are very few things that we know about him. Some historians think Homer's birthplace may have been on an island on the eastern edge of the Aegean Sea, or perhaps in a city on the nearby coast, but they don't have evidence to
The ancient Greeks and Romans contributed to western civilization in many different forms of literature and architecture. Both of these cultures produced a variety of literary works which are still studied today. One of the biggest contributions to literature was from the author known as Homer. Homer was known for two of ancient Greece’s most epic poems, The lliad and The Odyssey. Both of these poems have had a profound impact on western literature and continue to influence teachers and authors today. “The lliad and The Odyssey have provided not only seeds but fertilizer for almost all the other arts and sciences in
