The news and social media can help with the investigation. The relationship between the police and journalists depends to a large extend upon the SIO and his attitude towards the media (Innes 1999). By working together, not against the media, the SIO can take advantage of the free publicity. It can help with solving crime, reaching out to witnesses, and gaining the trust and confidence of the public (Cook & Tattersall 2008: 386). Especially when a person is missing (Gibson 2015). Jill Meagher’s husband Tom Meagher turned to social media for help with finding his wife, who was missing at the time. It got a lot of attention and within a few days the offender was located through CCTV footage the Victoria police released. The case was solved quickly …show more content…
The media is an industry that wants to sell the most out of their product: the story. They will try to make their stories as exciting and interesting possible (Innes 1999). If the SIO does not negotiate and talk with the press, they face the risk of the press interfering, meddling in, and/or impeding the investigation (Cook & Tattersall 2008:386). However, sometimes it is in the best interest to withhold information from the press (Cook & Tattersall 2008: 402). In the Damilola Taylor murder investigation a tabloid newspaper leaked evidence that could have been information only the offender could have acquired. It severely weakened the evidence and it ended up being ruled as inadmissible (Damilola Taylor Investigative Review 2002, as discussed in Cook & Tattersall 2008). One should not only be careful with what one says, but also what one shows. In 2009, senior counterterrorism officer Bob Quick accidently showed his papers about a planned anti-terror operation to the waiting press. The documents carried sensitive information about an operation planned by the MI6 and several police officers. The press did not care and within a few minutes the pictures were circling online. As a result, they had to rush their plans forward and quickly impose a “D notice” to restrict the media. Quick was fired soon after (Dodd & Batty 2009). For these kind of situations, quick thinking and handling is needed to still get a positive result out of the situation. Off-the-record press briefings have the tendency to interfere with ongoing police investigations and could give the suspect the chance to evade arrest. For example, once the media has been alerted of a possible terror-related arrest, they will soon arrive race to the location to be the first with the “breaking news”. This is a big warning to the suspects that the police are on its way (House of commons 2009). During the
It is because of the media that policing agencies are able to reach as many people as they do. In emergency situations the general public turns to the media for “guidance”, and during child abductions, the media informs the public with information to help find the child. More specifically the media will let the public know what the child was wearing, there hair color, eye color, age and other detail. There is also the fact that the media will inform the public of dangerous people and give a description of them including their name and possible vehicles.
There are multiple choices that some people could do or go into for a career of their choice. Some of those choices can have different requirements like different degrees for example. One choice that people could choose would be to go into criminal justice. This would be a good career to go into because their are multiple job opportunities in the criminal justice system. Some of these careers could go from being a cop to being a homicide detective.
On the evening of November 26th, 2000 a sixteen-year-old girl named Leanne Tiernan went missing. She was walking back from shopping with her friend and took a shortcut back home. Not until 9 months later in August of 2001 was her body found. A man walking his dogs in Lindley Woods found her body. Her body was in a shallow grave. Over her was a duvet cover that had a floral pattern. She was wrapped in ten plastic green bags with twine wrapped around them to keep them together. She had three cable ties around her wrists one yellow on one wrist, one black on the other, and a second black tie to connect the other two ties together very much like a daisy chain. She had a plastic bag around her head with a dog collar to hold
Solving a crime is difficult for detectives. Homicides are even harder cases to solve, the only person that can really tell what happened is dead. So many people are afraid to step up as witnesses, they fear their life would be in jeopardy for helping the detectives. For homicide detectives, the first forty-eight hours is the most critical part for solving a case. After that, the probability of solving the case reduces by fifty percent. Each passing hour gives suspects more time to get away, witnesses more time to forget what they saw, and crucial evidence more time to be lost forever. There are several steps to take in solving a homicide.
Since the time that the scientific science dramatization "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" turned into a tremendous hit and generated its fans, reporters have been worried about what they instituted the "CSI Effect." The hypothesis behind the effect is that fans of the well-known show disguise misguided judgments about the law that they bring with them into the court as jurors. In this way, the trepidation is that the TV show is at last influencing the results of trials - and not in a great manner. Criminal justice researchers have started to study the inquiry of whether nationals who are called to serve on juries bring unreasonable desires and convictions to the court as a consequence of TV projects. The impact that these projects may have on the jurors, their desires, and their choices is known as the CSI effect.
The detective genre is recognizable by the mystery that it represents or establishes. Every word of a fiction novel is chosen with a purpose, and that purpose on a detective novel is to create suspense. The excerpts from The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler, Murder Is My Business by Lynette Prucha, and Devil in a Blue Dress by Walter Mosley, create an atmosphere of suspense and mystery. Even though they all fit into this category, there are some differences that make each novel unique. The imagery that the authors offer in the excerpts helps the reader to distinguish the similarities and the differences.

What did the judge do wrong? Which judicial selection option—either appointment, election, or merit—would help to reduce instances of judicial misconduct?
When you see the shows such as Homicide Hunter or Killer Instincts many times my mom and I try to figure out who is the murder. Most of the time my prediction is right because of the details my mom misses, and putting together all the clues. From then on I realised I had a gift, even if it was I was just watching television show. That is what sparked my interest the criminal justice area. I have contemplated the career choices that would best fit my interest leaving me with Homicide Detective and Criminologist. While both careers deal with criminal justice they differ greatly in the type of work environment, pay, skills/education.
You arrive at the crime scene of a multiple homicide (more than one victim) and see that it's already been roped off from the public by the police. You see that the soil's been disturbed in such a way that suggests a one-person grave. You skip additional searches and begin collecting evidence. Then you map the scene, taking plenty of photos, and begin careful excavation of the

One of the major roles of the social media in modern policing is acting as an analytical tool. Criminal investigations tend to incorporate use of social media in creating leads towards the suspects . This is mainly because most people have the tendency in updating their whereabouts on social media and even it is possible to know the character of someone by accessing their accounts.
Nothing is more crucial to any investigation than the actions of the first officers on the scene and the actions they take regarding the preservation of the crime scene, detention of witnesses and an arrest if possible. The immediate objective of the first officers on the scene must be the safety of all parties involved and all else follows
On April 05, 2016 at approximately 1518 hours, I was dispatch to 2004 Pine Street in reference to a death investigation. Upon my arrival, I met with Detective Campbell who was the lead Investigator at the scene. Detective Campbell stated that the victim neighbors reported a strong smell coming from the victim’s (Cortiz Lazarz) residence. The neighbors called 911 and Officer Volk was the first responded officer on scene. Defective Campbell and officer Volk stated that the victim located on the living room floor, fazing the south from the residence. Detective Campbell requested I process the scene for evidence and documentation.
