Comparable to your experience with the inability to connect with other Christians about homosexuality, I also accept people for who they are regardless of their sexual orientation. So, viewing the presentations with Jeff, Wendy, and Dr. Garzon were informative, however my beliefs and opinion differs from theirs. Also, there were terms used within the video presentation that seemed inappropriate for professional counselors, such as Jeff and Wendy to utilize when referring to homosexuals as being broken or addicts. Nonetheless, homosexuality is not an addiction. Additionally, religious beliefs and therapeutic methodologies to sexual reorientation such as reparative or conversion therapies has and will continue to be a controversial topic in which
Laramie consisted of many other religions that presented the views of many of their citizens towards homosexuality. Reverend Fred Phelps, a minister from Kansas, negatively impacted the gay community as he protested against homosexuals. He believed gays were determined to go to hell because of God’s hatred for them. Reverend Phelps like McKinney was a homophobe, which upset many citizens when he ranted about gays going to hell right after the murder of Matthew Shepard. Many citizens including Romaine Patterson decided to take a stance against such hatred to “show the differences. And [to] think at times like this when we’re talking about hatred as much as the nation is right now, that someone needs to show . . . that there is a better way of
Over the last few decades, our society went through a huge transformation in culture, politics and media that no one else could have foreseen. There is an obvious increase in the acceptance of homosexuality. Even though lesbian and gay people have gradually moved onto the stage in growing numbers, there are still some problems exist in the ways that media perpetuate homosexual stereotypes. According to an article by Chong-suk Han, “The subjective storytelling found in ‘journalistic’ pieces reinforces social inequalities by ‘forstering such feelings of collective belonging—based on class, gender, sexual preference, subcultural lifestyle or whatever’”(Chong-suk Han, 2008). Nowadays, the media plays an important role in carrying and transforming the new cultural ideas toward the whole society, few could ignore the existence of lesbian and gay people. In order to prevent discriminating them from the other groups, more accurate representation of homosexuals should be provide on the mainstream media.
Homosexuality Annotated Bibliography Adriaens, Pieter R., and Andreas De Block. “The Evolution of a Social Construction: the Case of Male Homosexuality.” Scholarly Journals, vol. 49, ser. 4, University Press, 2006, pp. 570–585.
Homosexuality on screen has been a taboo subject since the creation of film in the late nineteenth century, and has remained that way until the violent protests of the 1970s sexual revolution. Consequently, the neglection concerning the portrayal of gay community members can be linked to the overuse and dehumanization of queer stereotypes used as comedic relief throughout film history. The overall postponement in the representation of homosexuals paused the long march for equal rights even outside of the cinematic world. In result of conservative rejection toward such liberal topics, filmmakers had to conceal “queer cinema” as production codes enforced strict laws, but as time progressed, so did the involvement of the LGBTQ community in the cinema.
even though sexuality can be considered universal, the sexual behaviors affiliated with it offer different attitudes in various communities. Sexuality is aligned to sexual attraction where individuals can identify themselves with a broad range of sexuality that is bisexual, gay or being lesbian. Sexuality can change over time in a person depending on the circumstances surrounding him or her. It may be affected by the social circle and emotional imbalances that may occur in an individual. Interestingly there exists sexual inequality among many societies in the world. As observed, many societies encourage men to have multiple sex partners but forbid it in women. Moreover, pre-marital sex is promoted in men, but women are flaunted if they participate in pre-marital sex. Across the globe, Western Europe has embraced certain norms in sexuality such as homosexuality whereas African society embraces a negative attitude towards the same.
Homosexuality has had a big impact on the world based on rights and beliefs. One religion that known for not “allowing” homosexuality is: the Catholic faith. According to the Catholic Church homosexuality is a sin based on acts done (Brom, 2004), priests can be homosexual (Squires, 2014), homosexuality goes against the natural law (Brom, 2004), homosexuals are allowed in the Catholic faith under special treatment (Brom, 2004), and the not all Catholics agree with the Catholic faith being against homosexuality (Lipka, 2014). The following is the information everyone should know about the Catholic views on homosexuality. All of the following has been written from the past to the current events.
Richard von Drafft-Ebing first challenged the heterosexual assumption “that all people were born heterosexual and that being attracted to opposite-sex partners was the natural conditions of human beings” (Koppelman, p. 264) with the term coining and the 1886 publication of his book titled “Homosexuality,” in which he chose not to describe homosexuality as a “sexual inversion” but as “someone sexually attracted to members of the same sex.” (Koppelman, p. 264) Later his term “homosexuality” was used again to challenge the “general assumption that all human beings possessed a heterosexual orientation” in the Kinsey Report.
The film used for my assignment caught my attention for illustrating a man that would be considered a superstar for our time. Staged in the Victorian era, Wild’s artistic love for beauty is shown through his work in novels, poems playwrights and handsome men. In the beginning of the scene where he meets Constance (wife) ,a lady is shown asking what made Oscar so important? The other lady responds “he is known for being himself. As the movie continues viewers are able to see what made Wilde different from many of the other men during this time. The film depicts the subject of homosexuality and considered a crime against societies order. Social concerns of homosexually were seen as a taboo and those convicted served time. Throughout his marriage
Image #2: This image currently appears with a sketch of two men, having sex with each other. There is a lot of detail placed into this sketch with all of the shadings and light outlines. The image also contains images of semen and what it looks to be tentacles, wrapped around the male with the red coloured hair.
As an individual surrounded by family and friends who candidly advocate for the unwavering, equal rights of homosexuals in all aspects of life and community, it is difficult to understand why debate is still taking place. In God, Sex, and Politics: Homosexuality and Everyday Theologies, Dawne Moon provides an informative and thought-provoking ethnographic study of the divide within the United Methodist Church (UMC) as members grapple with and respond to homosexuality. She writes an articulate account of a twenty-one month period she spent at two congregations attempting to maintain communitas and transcendence amongst their members and avoid politics.
In Chapter 10 of Rudolph K. Sanders’ book, Christian Counseling Ethics: A Handbook for Psychologists, Therapists and Pastors, Mark Yarhouse, Jill Kays and Stanton Jones discuss the “sexual minority” as it pertains to the field of professional counseling. This group is defined as “individuals with same sex attractions or behavior, regardless of self-identification” (Sanders, et. al., 2013, p. 252). By looking at counseling the homosexual community through its etiology, standards by which a counselor should proceed with treatment, and the options a client has on deciding treatment options, we can be better prepared as Christian counselors to be better prepared in serving the needs of others.
As a society, we feed off of each other for what a proper response to something may be. As children, we first look to see our mother’s reaction after falling down; if she is calm, I should also be. We look to each other for what a definition of things should be, as well. In the 1950’s, it was generally obscene for a woman on television to show her belly button, whereas today we will show nude breasts on primetime programming. This follows the sociological theory of symbolic interactionism, where society and individual social interaction provides a subjective meaning to deviant behavior. Many social definitions change for the better, however some change for the worse. One such example was once viewed as normal, with no second thoughts given
The Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer community has been subjected to relentless criticism and bias for many years. To the point where anyone who believes that they are gay feels ashamed or afraid to come out and be who they really are. She’s a boy I Knew, is a story about Gwen Haworth and her struggle to accept and then become the woman she was always meant to be. In the film Gwen faces many struggles and in the following paper I will specifically examine how the concepts of gender inequality, ambiguity, and the language barriers society creates as it relates to the film (Anzovino & Boutilier 2015).
In the video on homosexuality Mark talks about how difficult it was for him growing up without anyone to talk to about his homosexuality. He describes how in high school the kids used to call each other fags just to be mean. The term fag is used in a derogatory way whether a person is or is not a homosexual. After high school Mark was able to fully formulate his sexual identity and fully open up who he is. He now has a support system that consists of his family and friends. Mark describes how his sister and grandmother are the ones he is closest to in his family. I loved his story about how he told his grandmother that he was gay Mark said that she works as a waitress and that one of the busgirls had given her a photo to give to him to see
Since I as a kid I was very sheltered regarding the media that I was allowed to consume. My parents were very deliberate about not encouraging me to “grow up too quickly” by assisting me in selecting age appropriate clothing, media, and friends. Regardless, I was always aware of my body because of dance. I was classically trained in ballet for 11 years of my life, and from an early age I was aware that my body did not match the prima ballerina—tall, reed thin, flat not curvy. When I started developing breasts I knew that I was in for it, I’m a curvy girl and that isn’t celebrated in the ballet community. When my mother started realizing that I was comprehending and taking in these messages she took me out of ballet when I was in 7th grade.
