The civil war finally ended in 1992, but the effects of the civil war can still be felt today. El Salvador is one of the poorest developing nations in the world. According to the 2014 Index of Economic Freedom, El Salvador ranks 59th out of 186 countries based on 10 freedoms. When ranking countries, the Index of Economic Freedom considers the rule of law, government size, regulatory efficiency, and open markets within each country in order to determine its ranking. “El Salvador’s economic freedom has been stagnant and scores for eight of the 10 economic freedoms, notably freedom from corruption, property rights, business freedom, and government spending, have deteriorated markedly over the past two decades.” I believe El Salvador’s poor economic global presence is mainly a result of corrupt government and violence. In a country of 8 million people, Honduras has faced more than its share of political instability, poverty, and strong US influence during the past century. This paper examines the effects of the US-sponsored Contras’ war on Honduras during the 1980s. Additionally, an interpretation and analysis of the Reagan Administration foreign policy in Central America are critical to understand the consequences that have affected the Republic of Honduras.

The land area of Honduras is about 111890 km2, and the water area is about 200 km2, most of the land area is mountain range and plateaus. The natural resources include timber, gold, silver, copper, lead, iron coal, fish, shrimp, and hydropower. In Honduras, the economy is based on agriculture, so Honduras is one of the poorest countries in Latin America.
