How are you? I am fine and I hope you are as well. I was able to meet Ms. Ellen Goldley, Jim Vigoreaux, and Graham Harper, all of whom happen to be the candidates for the Dean and express my desires, concerns, and wishes. I have asked all the candidates the following questions:
• How can you improve this campus by letting become more diverse? For example, a majority of students are high school graduates, rather than college transfers.
• How do you plan to improve the availability of concentrations? For example, we have more Science concentrations than Humanities
• Upon graduating from the Honors College, all graduates will be receiving a Bachelor in Arts, with a concentration in…… but there seem to be a promotion of STEM programs and research.

Graham Harper. Mr. Harper also mentioned that we need to promote the Honors College by making connections with outsiders and advertisements. For example, every time I am on I-95 there is a sign regarding the Boca Campus. Also, across the street at the Baseball Stadium there is a billboard with Palm Beach State College, rather than, the Harriet Wilkes Honors College. We need to promote the Honors College and Mr. Graham has explained the solution to me clearly. Mr. Graham also have a diverse background of studies, which the other candidates …show more content…
Goldley and Mr. Vigoreaux are from Science backgrounds. Both individuals agreed that there has to be a dominant area of study at every academic institution and unfortunately, Science is the one. The both also agree that John Kelly created the Honors College with the intentions of creating a STEM College, which I do not agree. A student asked Ms. Goldley what are some improvements that she has in mind, for the Honors College? Ms. Goldley mentioned that she would love to build a new inexpensive lab for the science majors, which would include a café, recreation, and dining room. Also, Mr. Vigoreaux has a bad habit of straying away from the questions I asked. For example, I mentioned to Mr. Vigoreaux that upon graduating from the Honors College, all graduates will be receiving a Bachelor in Arts, with a concentration in…… but there seem to be a promotion of STEM programs and research. Is Humanities important to you and how do you plan to promote it equally? Mr. Vigoreaux reminded me that the medical field is very important and technology has improve and so, within the next two decades the medical field will continue to be demanding. I asked Mr. Vigoreaux, if there would be a need for students who are studying Sociology, Women’s Studies, English, Political Science, Law, and of course he mentioned that they are important, but not as
Broad perspective is critical. Without it, opportunities and possibilities are greatly limited. The Honors College is not simply a place to gain perspective, but also a place to provide perspective to others. Interdisciplinary academics, leadership development, undergraduate research, and community & global experiences are the tenets of the Honors College. My experiences are closely aligned to these views; therefore, I feel I can contribute my own

I expect a great deal from my time with Virginia Commonwealth University Honors College. I enjoy that I will have an adviser that truly cares about my wellbeing and education, and I believe this will help me succeed as I pursue my Bachelor’s degree in Biology. I hope to become close with the faculty and staff of the Honors College as I strive towards my ultimate goal of becoming a Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon. Although I plan to commute to and from VCU for classes rather than stay on campus, the Honors College dorms are an extreme luxury provided to those students that are qualified. I also am ecstatic about the special classes and curriculum that is available to Honors students. I am pursuing VCU in an attempt to further my education, and I believe the Honors College is my best opportunity to do so. I look forward to exploring all the Honors College has to offer, and I hope it will help me to become a better student, graduate, and person all around.
As a part of the HBCU Alumni Alliance’s Higher Education initiative program; Alumni of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are concerned about the inadequate representation of minorities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) related professions. Consequently, DCHBCUAA STEM professionals have designed and organized an instructional hands-on STEM workshop for students in grades 10-12, to enlighten them on the different facets of professions available in the sciences. As a part of our community partnership with Kaiser Permanente, we have a workshop scheduled for Saturday, April 29, 2017, from 800 am-5:00 pm, at 2101 Jefferson Street in Rockville, Maryland.

I am a journalism major with a focus in public relations and a minor in marketing therefore I believe the Honors college will enhance my academic experience at Georgia State by allowing me to develop my people skills as well as my personal professional development. The honors college programs do not only provide rigorous academic programs for strong individuals to constantly feel challenged but it also provides guidance to develop individual professionalism ,and I believe both would allow me to grow as a journalism major. In addition, I know the amazing staff that the honors college provides would help me maintain my focus and personal development all four years of my undergraduate studies.
Though the Williams Honors College had a tremendous impact on my undergraduate days, I am very excited about how it will impact my future. The Honors College has deepened my commitment to the University of Akron and the greater Akron community. Though neither of my parents are from Akron, they moved me here when I was two years old. Akron is my home and my time at the University has secured my roots. I am appreciative of everything the Williams Honors College has given me, and I cannot wait to give some of that back to the University of Akron and the Williams Honors College in the
Although it may be clear the countless ways in which the Honors College can contribute to my goals post graduation, it is also crucial to acknowledge the ways in which I will positively contribute to the community as well. For one,
Supporting the success for diverse students on campus is just the beginning to make their experience as equal to that of the white community. Without positive campus attitude and without the recognition of what diversity brings to a school and a classroom, the system would not thrive and those of a different ethnic background will not be inclined to attend. The conclusion to Espinosa’s, Gaertner, and Orfields article is that college and university leaders
The Honors College will enable me to collaborate closely with my fellow peers and explore real world problems, as I strive to improve the lives of those around me and uplift the South Florida community. After reading and sharing the same mission, values, and vision advertised on the FIU Honors College website, I hold true that the challenging curriculum, research, community engagement, international study, and cultural literacy will further my enrich my studies in international business and lead to overwhelming success in my personal
Community and diversity are two of the most prominent factors colleges and universities use to attract students. At Temple University, it is easy to see that the school tries hard to implement these words into our heads whether it be succeeding or failing in reality. Temple makes it known in their mission statement, policies, and standing proof that they surely uphold the title as being one of the most diverse schools in the nation. However, after reading the chapter about Rebekah Nathan’s experience in My Freshman Year, I recognized her assessment among freshman is similar to that of my own granted it had not been completely
With the help of the Honors College, I can accomplish many intellectual, personal, and professional goals.
Through my daily interactions with Honors students from other backgrounds and disciplinary studies, I will not only gain new friends with whom I can study and collaborate, but I will also be able to look at my studies from a different perspective to apply new concepts to unfamiliar situations inside the classroom and laboratory. I can also achieve this by participating in the Honors College’s Cultural Companions program, through which I can support our school’s international population and gain a well-rounded college experience. By becoming a Cultural Companion, I can serve as a mentor for my peers and hone my leadership skills so that I can prepare to lead my own research project as a graduate student. Becoming a part of this program will encourage me to enrich my overall undergraduate experience as I enhance my teamwork abilities and strive to become a role model for my fellow students within and outside of the Honors
