Horror Movie : Get Out As A Typical Horror Film

Get Out is not the typical horror film but is a horror film. Instead of the classic monster, ghost, goblin or obvious killer, white characters in the film are the monsters. I want to compare Get Out with stereotypical horror films. Get Out is one of the most profound American horror films that sits in a category of its own. The focus on race in the film is horrific for many from both ends. The powerfully blatant gender roles replicate the socialized gender roles that have existed in American society for decades.

Jeremy is more of the hyper-masculine male figure. He is drunk and his aggressiveness, taunting and willingness to break in the black men show power and control over the black men. On the other side of the coin, Jeremy seemingly gets a little gay in the film. The same borderline homosexual behaviors of white slave owners using sodomy as a form of power. Rose plays the role of the innocent girlfriend. She is beautiful and thin meeting some physical appearance standards for women but does not perform girly very well. An example of this is when she and Chris hit the deer on the drive up to her parents’ house, she doesn’t scream or freak out as many would expect women to react in that instance. Rose does not dress very sexy throughout the film. Rose does not comply with all performances of femininity subverting societal expectations both black and white. Missy has the lower paying job and displays domestic behaviors by decorating the home and when concerning the servants (whom are actually Dean’s parents). Her role is imperative to the Armitage’s’ operation by hypnotizing the black people and sending them to their sunken place. She seems to have control over Dean and Jeremy at times, and make fun of the lack of femininity her daughter displays. Women largely are expected to fulfill obliging, emotional domesticated roles and the white women seemingly meet these facets.
