If you didn’t have friends, would you be able to live a valuable and meaningful life?
Friendship is a very valuable thing because it can get people through the hardest of times, as shown in Nancy Farmer’s House of the Scorpion, where the reign of El Patron over his country, Opium, is overthrown by his own clone, Matteo Alacran, with the help of his few friends, whom he keeps through loyalty and compassion.
“Tomorrow he would begin the task of breaking down the empire of Opium. It was a huge and terrifying job, but he wasn't alone.”
“Everything was ready for me. Tam Lin gave me maps and food and showed me how to climb mountains. I didn't understand. I didn't want to understand.”

That's because there isn't any difference. The idea of clones being inferior is a filthy lie."
“Any rat in a sewer can lie. It's how rats are. It's what makes them rats. But a human doesn't run and hide in dark places, because he's something more. Lying is the most personal act of cowardice there is."
“He wasted no tears on the Alacráns or their slaves Felicia, Fani, and
Everyone in the world is different and some people are discriminated against because of those differences. Imagine being a normal person that doesn’t have any real physical differences but is hated because of a few numbers tattooed to ones foot. It sure would make life frustrating and make it difficult to succeed because of obstacles created by hate from others. In the book, The House of the Scorpion, Matt shows he gets through life’s struggles and grows up when he accepts his identity, makes his own choices and gets through his problems with Maria.
One such value of friendship that is demonstrated to be of major importance throughout the novel is loyalty, and how important it truly is to a friendship. Furthermore, the novel also demonstrates how vital support is as a value of friendship, and how it can both amend and create them. On top
Therefore, clones should not be made because they would
“The world, that understandable and lawful world, was slipping away. Once there was this and that; and now- and the ship had gone.” Pg 91
Friendship opens our minds to different views and perspectives and change our perceptions. It has the power to change people’s views on life in a positive way. True friends will do anything to keep their friendship alive, no matter the barriers. Potok proves through the friendship of Danny and Reuven that friendship can be achieved no matter the barriers. He proves that friendship is a key value to life through his motif
Without friends life is lonely and isolated. Friends are important to share enjoyable activities with, companions with whom to share worries, people to rescue you in difficulty and to be comforted at times of stress. Additionally friendships have enormous developmental implications (Murray 2009). It helps the socialising process. Also, it promotes the natural move towards “greater independence” in adolescence (Murray 2009). It does this because when you depend on someone for so long you start to branch off on our own and stop depending on others like you used to. Adolescent friendships also provide a connection to others who are at the same stage (Murray 2009).
The House of The Scorpion is a dark plot written by Nancy Farmer about a young boy named Matteo Alacrán. He lived in isolation with his caretaker, Celia who works for the highly compelling and affluent Alacrán family, of which El Patron is the head. El Patron is the drug lord ruler of the dystopian country, Opium. Later on in the story, Matt finds out he is the clone of El Patron and his life takes a turn for the worse. Through the characters of El Patron, the keepers, Tam Lin and Celia, Farmer shows us that those bestowed with power have the ability to use it however they please, for better or for worse.
The theme of friendship courses through Chaim Potok’s book, The Chosen. Potok desires to show the reader what a strong friendship looks like and how it stands up to the test of time. When two people know each other well and spend a lot of time together, there are bound to be misunderstandings, fights, and other trials. Yet God says in His word “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” (New American Standard Bible, Proverbs 27:17) Even when friendships are difficult, they can “sharpen” the people involved in the friendship, like in the case of Danny and Reuven. Danny and Reuven’s friendship lasts through Danny’s irrational behavior, Reuven’s outbursts of anger, and Reb Saunders’s absurd beliefs.
As Thomas Aquinas states, “There is nothing on this earth more prized than true friendship.” Friends cheer each other up when they are sad and support them when they are happy. In John Steinbeck’s novella Of Mice and Men, two migrant workers, George and Lennie, arrive as newcomers on the ranch. Throughout the story, different problems are thrown their way, and their friendship is tested with each one. George shows how true friendship requires sacrifice because friends sacrifice personal freedom, they protect each other, and they sacrifice emotional energy.

Matt, the main character, is a clone of a drug lord in Opium, El Patron. Matt struggles to be accepted by family and friends and he doesn’t have very many people who care for him or like him. Matt has to learn that if someone in Opium knows he’s clone, he won’t be liked by them unless it’s someone like Tam Lin, his bodyguard, Celia, his caregiver, or Maria, his best friend. Throughout this book, Farmer really shows how acceptance is important and how there can be a lot of happiness when there is. We see acceptance when Celia cares for
