The History of Basketball Have you ever wondered how basketball was created? Have you ever questioned how basketball has evolved into becoming one of the most popular sports in the world? Basketball evolved from a simple sport played in one gym to now being more complex and played in gyms all over the world. It was Dr. James Naismith who first created the basics of basketball. When he first made the game, no one could have imagined the games success and spread throughout the entire world. According to Wonderopolis.org, Dr. James Naismith was born on November 6, 1861 in Canada. It was 1891 while Naismith was working as a physical education instructor at the local YMCA training school in Springfield, Massachusetts, when basketball was created. Naismith was being influenced by his boss to create a new indoor game that was able to provide an “athletic distraction”. The reason it needed to be played indoors was because they needed a game played during the winter that still required a lot of effort from the players. Naismith had been given a two week time period to come up with a new game to play. Wonderopolis.org says “He decided to invent a game of skill, finesse, and accuracy, rather than one that relied on pure strength.” Naismith said he was inspired by the child game “duck on a rock”. This game involves players throwing a rock at a duck perched on a rock. The first game of basketball was played on December 21, 1891. This game was played with a soccer ball,
James A. Naismith, the man who started it all, was the inventor of basketball. Dr. Naismith was a Canadian man who taught a physical education class at the YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts. On December 1, 1891 at the recreation facility, the school asked Naismith to find a way to occupy his class of 18 outside due to short gym space (Donald). He made do with his available recourses and decided to place two peach bushel baskets 10 feet high on iron poles as goals to throw the soccer ball into. The teams of 9 played the game for quite a while, running and shooting until the game ended with a final shot made by William R. Chase, making the only basket during the entire contest (Donald). This was the first basketball game played, though it was much different than the modern day game it laid the foundation for the legacy Dr. Naismith was to
Michael Jeffrey Jordan was his full name. MJ was his nickname, he was known as the man that changed the game of basketball forever and nobody knew that even when he was in high school that he would grow to be the best player to ever play the game. Michael was influenced by his older brother, his brother was much bigger and stronger than him, but Michael made it his goal that eventually one day that he would be better than him, Michael was cut by his high school coach twice, and wouldn’t make the team until his senior year, where he completely changed the game and was unrealistic the way he could dunk it and dribble, and as well shoot the ball. Michael attended the University Of North Carolina. That is when the nation took notice that he was
December 21, 1891- The birth of basketball. It has been changed from simply shooting a soccer ball into a peach basket to dunking a seven pound, leather ball into an iron rim. In the early years of the game, basketball was not as popular as other sports. In the 1985 NBA draft all this would change with the emergence of a 6'6" basketball phenomenon from Wilmington, North Carolina. Although going third in the draft, he recreated the game and is known as the best player to ever touch a basketball; he is Michael Jordan.
The game much of the world knows today as basketball has been played for years upon years. Ranging from small gym class games to the Olympic Summer games, the game has been played all over the world and has become a major part of some people's lives. It was invented by a great man named James Naismith. He created basketball and gave it the push it needed to become one of the biggest games the world holds dear today. James was Born on November 6, 1861 in Almonte, Ontario, Canada. His parents were John Naismith and Margaret Young. He attended grade school at Bennie's Corner just outside of Almonte in 1867. He finished his schooling in 1875. Sadly, two years before he was finished with his schooling his parents died as well as his grandmother. He Entered Almonte High School in 1875 and left the school
James Naismith built the sport of basketball out of nothing. The sport basketball known to society today, isn't the same sport it was in 1891. Originally played with two peach baskets and a soccer ball, Naismith published
James Naismith is the inventor of basketball in the year of 1891 at the age of 30. When doing this he used a peach basket as the rim and after doing this founded the university of Kansas basketball program. He was born in Canada, where he studied physical education at McGill University at Montreal before moving to the United States. After he founded the Kansas City Jayhawks basketball team, he seven years later decided to be the coach of the team. While coaching he had the honor of coaching phog Allen, who then became coach after Naismith and coached for 39 seasons, creating a great coaching tree in the Jayhawks system. And actually quick fact is that is that Naismith is still the only coach in the Jayhawks despite coaching his final season in 1907 is the only coach in Kansas City Jayhawks men’s basketball to end a season with a losing record. Soon after he created basketball and he formed a team with the Jayhawks basketball just blew up, all over it was becoming a something big. In June 1946 something
There is so much more to the history of basketball than people think. There were so many changes from the beginning of basketball to now. The way people played has changed dramatically as well as all the rules. The way basketball originated and why it was even thought of is such a shock. Most people don’t think of things like this in the midst of needing something instantly, but James Naismith did.
Imagine, that in 1896, the first ever professional basketball is being played on the third floor of Masonic Temple Hall in New Jersey, that was held in a banquet hall, which was enclosed with sharp and dangerous chicken wire that you could easily be cut with. The game of basketball, as you can tell, has developed a great margin over time. As far as the ball and net itself, to the rules and way the game is played, there were many different causes for changes that had positive effects, as well as some that may have had some negative effects.
Have you ever wondered where and how basketball originated? Basketball is a sport with an interesting history. Basketball was created by James Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts. James Naismith came up with 13 rules for basketball. Basketball has not only impacted the world but it is a major part in sport history.
The inventor who made basketball was James Naismith. James was born in 1861. James attended school at McGill University and Presbyterian College in Montreal (A&E TV, 2014).. He became a physical education teacher at McGill University and at Springfield College in Springfield Massachusetts. James Naismith lived in Almont, Ontario. Basketball was made in 1891(Kagan, 2004). The basketball game was patent in 1929 by Dr. Heather Guthrie, head of physical education at the school for Christian workers (A&E TV, 2014). The actual basketball itself was patent by G.L. Pierce on June 25, 1929 (Kagan, 2004).
Basketball, a sport that began among 18 men in a YMCA, has blossomed into a global business played by over three hundred million people today. Dr. James Naismith, under instruction from the head of physical education at the School for Christian Workers, was given two weeks to create a new indoor sport. In the beginning, the game was played with a peach basket and a soccer ball, the first contest was played December 21, 1898. The NBA, or National Basketball Association’s current net worth is about 635 million dollars, infinitely more than ever expected by Naismith who was simply tasked to make a distraction for the rowdy youth of the church at the time. Basketball is one of the most interesting sports in America because of it’s immensely fast growth, social media presence and incredibly popular superstars.
The game Naismith came up with was inspired by a game he played as a child, “Duck on a Rock”. Peach baskets were used as hoops, which made the game really slow because every time a player made a basket, the ball would have to be retrieved by using a ladder. Basketball players played in cages of chicken wire and mesh to keep players from falling into spectator seats. Players would often get injured during the intense games. The game of basketball has evolved immensely since Naismith invented it.
The founder of basketball in James Naismith. He was a instructor at the YMCA in Springfield, Mass. It was Winter 1892 and his students were sick and tired of doing the same things they always did. So one day James asked the janitor if he could get him some boxes. The janitor couldn't find any boxes so he grabbed some peach baskets instead. He nailed them to the balcony, and TADA basketball was
This paper will show the evolution of Dr. Naismith’s game of basketball and team size, players on the court at a time, substitutions, baskets, backboards, balls, scoring, free throws, fouls, and the rules that come with them. The purpose of this paper is to show the development and evolution of basketball.
The game of basketball is pure representation of the lamb as the game was created from one man to give another man or woman something to do in his or her free time. The game was not created out of greed or jealousy it was purely for fun and something to do. The game of basketball is also the definition of creativity as the game continues to get more creative each and every day with players now going from just passing the ball to dribbling, shooting three point shots, and even dunks. When the game of basketball was in its earliest stages, there wasn’t even a such thing as a basketball. It doesn’t get much more creative than that. The first ever basketball was a soccer ball because Dr. Naismith did not even have enough money to create a new ball. It wouldn’t be until two whole years later that the basketball was created.
