Sadly, this describes what life was like for someone who suffered from AIDS in the nineties. The scene is enough to make anyone want to make a difference. Sadly, most do not make the leap from wanting to make a difference to actually making a difference. Elton John, however, did make that leap. The World Improvement Organization is looking to recognize someone who has done just that. They are set to bestow the 2016 Living Legacy Award upon someone who is making the world a better place. While there are countless people striving to improve the world, Elton John due to his generosity, more than anyone else deserves to receive the Living Legacy
The patience, compassion and encouragement of one person improved my family’s last years with its patriarch in countless ways. It was this improvement that inspired me to pursue a career as an
In the course of my time at Union County College, I was able to participate in measures that aided my community and those in need. I took part in the donation and creation of care bags which were donated to the Salvation Army. This initiative was made by AESNJ as part of their statewide drive to help those who lack the resources needed to obtain day to day necessities such as hygienic supplies, socks, tissues and other essentials. Additionally, I made a financial contribution which went towards aiding Syrian children. Helping individuals in need encouraged me to participate in Strides against Breast Cancer a walkathon which generated money for women whose lives were impacted by cancer. The financial donations assisted women who were unable
The two things that I can say without a doubt in my mind that I have done that have made a difference are my club, Irmo Arts Outreach, and my work at Lexington Medical Center(LMC) as a volunteer. Irmo Arts Outreach has left an impact more on the community than anything else, and the volunteer work at LMC has changed me more than anyone else. Irmo Arts Outreach was a dream I had, which I was able to make into a reality with the help of a few friends. What we do is go to the VA hospital to perform musical pieces for veterans, to let them know we appreciate everything they did for us and that they are not alone. I started the club, I organized our visits to the hospital, and I got permission for them to let us perform there. On our first visit
When I was eight years of age, I started to realize that there was an entire word outside of the town, state, and country that I lived in. I became concerned about the lives of others, even those that I didn’t know personally. I often thought “There are people in other countries that don’t even have enough water to live, and I am living an amazing life here in America”. Not only was I concerned for those people, but I took action to help them. It was then that I started a fundraiser to raise money for people that can’t afford the basic necessities to live in third world countries. To this day, I have been saving every penny I could afford to make sure other people can live a better life.
One of Alex Scott’s accomplishments that made her influential is her raising over 1 million dollars for cancer research. In the article 8 amazing kids who have changed the world, it says “Alex continued her lemonade stands throughout her life, ultimately raising over $1 million toward cancer research.” This shows her compassion, determination, and work ethic that helped her to earned 1million dollars for
Instead of retiring and silently disappearing from public limelight, Mr Johnson chose to devote significant portion of his energy towards eradicating the stigma towards HIV/AIDS patients, started a nonprofit that raised funds to finance programs that helped members of minority communities with education, prevention and testing of HIV/AIDS. His unselfish nature seen from his playing style on the basketball court was not just limited to sport that he played in his good times. Even while facing adversity and uncertain future, he chose to be a catalyst for change in moulding how the society deals with the scourge of
Trevor has changed the world in this book with just simple acts, and it's clear just how powerful one person, no matter the age, can be. That is how the Pay it forward book and it's movement really are, along with how someone can make it happen. Trevor has shown the power of one, how he has affected a whole generation of people, and how he stands against the society of me me me. The question now is how can someone in the generation change it in real life, rather than just a
Oprah Winfrey and George Bush are people who have been recognized with the Humanitarian Award due to their contributions towards ending social injustices and discrimination. The Humanitarian Award is an honorary award given to people who are internationally known for their contributions to help create equality throughout the world. People are qualified when they are dedicating years of hard work towards accomplishing the end of discrimination. Robert F. Kennedy deserves the Humanitarian Award because of his contribution to the government and Martin Luther King Junior's assassination.
While every person on the CNN heroes list was impactful, Rosie Mashale was the most impactful because of her involvement in her community. She founded both Baphumelele Educare Centre and Baphumelele Children’s Home, which has given people opportunities that could change their life. “Baphumelele Children’s Home was created as a place of safety for abandoned, abused, neglected or orphaned children, many of whom have been affected by the HIV/Aids pandemic or have HIV/AIDS themselves.”(Gieske, paragraph 5). By creating a children’s home she has given those children stability that they mostly likely wouldn’t have had while in their previous situation. The children in the home now have access to education, safety, and love that they undoubtedly wouldn’t
“A Seattle football star Russell Wilson has started a foundation to raise money to give those people with cancer, hopefully, a better life. ‘It is a great event that everyone has a lot of fun at. It’s also a good way for me to stay connected to the community and partner with Russell Wilson on such a special event and help the incredible team at Seattle Children’s Hospital cure childhood cancers.’” (Boyle) This event helps give the patients something to take their minds off of the hospitals and potential life threatening disease. “Previously a patient at Seattle Children’s, Milton was now following in Wilson’s footsteps, visiting patients and sharing his own story of beating cancer. ‘He’s trying to change kids’ lives,’ Wilson said. ‘That’s the real deal when you see that in person, when you see a guy who only had 12 hours left to live, and now he feels so strong and feels so great.’” (Boyle) Donating money isn’t just to give yourself a better name or to make you feel better, it can also inspire others to do the same and share their stories. Milton wright was not supposed to live and was told he had 12 hours to live. Later Wilson donated just over 1,000,000 to the hospital allowing them to help save him and get Milton back on his feet. This helps show that anything can happen to anyone if you invest into your community. Saving one person's life
One of the greatest things we can do in this life is to help others. I’ve found no greater joy, than when I have been able to lift another’s burden. One the proudest achievements of my life, was when I completed my Eagle Scout project. I was able to raise money and collect items to furnish an apartment for African refugees who recently emigrated to the U.S. After a couple of months of collecting and fund raising, I organized volunteers to set up the refugees’ apartment. I couldn’t have been more proud than when I saw the family’s smiling
Peter Singer’s The Most Good You Can Do is an insightful, informative, philosophical spin on the typical self help book. His ideas on effective altruism, doing the most good with what you have, is a fresh look at living a charitable life. The book provides an ample amount of examples of people and companies who strive to make as much impact in the world as possible, likely in an effort to make effective altruism appear to be a feasible way of living for the average person. However, as the book progressed, it seemed to lose focus, shifting between profiles of effective altruists, and Singer’s own point of view on the movement. Overall, the ideas presented were interesting and thought provoking, but the entire text could have been shortened dramatically and
The world is full of people who want to be somewhat significant to the rest of the world ,but why need to if they can make a significant difference to a(n) individual who will thank them for marking a difference in their life. Something like this happened to me this year with my friend Philp ,who taught me everyone is worth something.
I began with small volunteer projects such as making toys for impoverished children, which you could imagine I’d be really good at doing. Subsequently, I began to accomplish bigger and better things such as using magic skills I had learned to cure terminal illnesses and cancers. Despite all of the good I had done, the most memorable deed was when I ended all hunger in the US. How did I complete such a difficult task, you may ask, well the same way Santa Claus delivers presents. Every week I would fly a sleigh around the US at night and drop off abundant amounts of food to poor people. On the other hand, I am working tirelessly at a global scale to end hunger but that will take a lifetime to achieve that goal.
That summer I donated 10 inches of my hair after working at the Oncology Department at St. Jude and seeing both a close friend and beloved teacher suffer from breast cancer. When people saw me after my haircut they asked why I would ever sacrifice my thick, black hair. But the moment I said I donated it to children with cancer, they immediately stopped questioning my intentions. One of my mom's friends who had a brother-in-law suffering from lung cancer even got inspired and donated her hair that fall. This summer when I donated my hair again, nobody questioned my motives. But beyond community service, my desire to support the underdog has permeated into my social life. My long conversations about promoting better treatment for marginalized groups during my newspaper editorial sessions always end up with me lamenting the injustice in the world. As I vigorously type articles on topics like under-representation of minorities in media, I become increasingly convinced that I have found my passion serving
