Aleyna Berberick Mrs.Gallos English 3H 3 November 2015 How Can Kids Best Be Convinced Not To Do Drugs? Drugs have been a rapidly growing problem for kids and teenagers over the years. Though there is no sure way to prevent the use of them, there are many precautions that can be taken to reduce, or eliminate the chances. The effects of taking drugs is far too dangerous to sit back and ignore. There are things that can be done today to prevent drug abuse among children in the future. The most common way to prevent drug abuse is simply by being educated on the dangers and effects of them. Drugs are used for many different reasons among teenagers and children. The most common reasons are “coping—to deal with anxiety, anger, depression, …show more content…
At first, parents may not notice or want to believe that their child would do drugs, but it is important to confront them as soon as possible if there are any signs of drug abuse. There are plenty of places and people to reach out to so parents can get the child help. Consider consulting counselors, teachers, or family members so you are not alone. Many of the effects that drugs can have on children are shocking. “More deaths, illnesses and disabilities stem from substance abuse than from any other preventable health condition. Today, one in four deaths is attributable to illicit drug use. People who live with substance dependence have a higher risk of all bad outcomes including unintentional injuries, accidents, risk of domestic violence, medical problems, and death”(Effects). On top of the injuries and illness there are health problems. Cardiovascular, organ failure, seizures and nausea are just a few common ones. Worst of all may be the effects that drugs have on the brain. The brain is where substance dependency, or addiction, sprouts from. Drugs cause chemical alterations on the brain which is why “euphoria” is often experienced. Though the high of the drug may be good for a while, it ultimately does its damage. There are many reasons why people should not use drugs. Kids should be educated on these reasons so they know of the effects and what
Stress and weight control among teens are some other reasons why they use drugs, smoke cigarettes, or drink alcohol (Teen Detox, 1). “Younger Children, at eight-grade level and below, are at a greater risk, because their personalities haven’t developed well enough, and the aren’t mature enough to know how to handle altered states of consciousness. As with any drug, the younger the age of first use, the higher the risk” (Dr. Larry Chait, Teen Addiction, 64).
These numbers reveal that teenagers face an apparent exposure to drugs, and have little trouble getting a hold of some if desired. This article concludes that drug use and its consequences are not stressed enough in the current high school curriculum. The statistics prove that more needs to be done to identify and educate students at risk for drug use.
Today drugs are considered to be an acceptable social phenomenon by many teenagers. If parents are involved with children on a day-to-day basis, they will more than likely know when the child starts to take drugs because of the big changes going on in their lives. There are many positive alternatives to drugs, so drugs are not the only fun and "cool" things to do (www.nodrugs.com 2).
Teenagers clearly already know about drugs because most of the population of them have had the chance to use them. A surprisingly low percentage of around half of the ones who had the chance to use them, did. Teaching children about drugs in their teens will help prevent them from using them in those years. Also, teaching children in primary school will prevent it as well says Project Know a drug education website. You might say that exposing teens to drug use may promote usage during those years. This will not promote it, it can help stop it. It will help stop usage or any ideas by showing the side effects and what can happen after using them. This will give reasons to teens on why not to use
Drugs create a problem for people everywhere. “It’s important not to downplay teenage drinking or drug abuse.” Let your teen know how you feel about drugs and alcohol. The world needs more effective drug programs, Now how do we create a good drug prevention program that works for all types of people? Many people struggle with drug use and it is sad to watch them go through it. Programs around the country and the world are trying to figure out what technique is the most effective for drug users. Many people who have a drug problem have been abusing drugs since they were younger. That can make it harder for them to stop using drugs because they have used it for so long and their bodies have become tolerant to the drug.
I truly believe that if you can approach and tackle an issue before it arises you have a better chance of preventing long-term issues that will emerge in the future. Through my studies I have learned that if you educate students on bad choice making and the consequences that come from it you have a better chance for those students not to make those bad decisions. For this Midterm Project I plan to target high school students and inform them about drug use and abuse. In my opinion I think that if we teach high school students the effects that drugs can have on your body and your future maybe we can prevent them from using drugs for the first time or stop the issue before it gets out of hand. Students who are in high school can be hard to talk to but if you use material and language that catches their attention your speech can very influential to them. I want to prevent teens from using drugs. I want and need them to be educated on all the harms that illegal substances do to your body immediately after using them and what long-term effects come with it as well. Students should be shown real life examples of citizens who have lived their lives influenced by drugs and examples of successful people who have chose a
If we advise people to say no to drugs from an adolescent age, it can reduce the number of students using drugs. So many students have dropped out school in my
Drug abuse is a pressing issue many adolescents face in America. Teenage brains are not developed enough to the point where completely rational decision making is possible. We as a society must find a better way to inform students so that they can make wiser decisions regarding recreational drug use.
Children who come from risk living situations are at a greater risk of engaging in drug use which can affect the brains development. An article by Hedl (2007) suggest that inhalant use had gone up because children do not recognize or perceive the harmful effects of the use of these inhalants. This is very crucial because this is a time when children’s brains are continuously growing and being shaped for the future of who they will become. Helping these types of children overcome their adversity, increase their coping skills, and stay away from drugs is very important to the brain development and cognitive abilities (2007).
Experimentation, addiction, death. From school assemblies to health class, these three words have been drilled into the minds of children and teens about the usage of drugs. Yet, there are still many kids and teens that want to and actually do experiment with drugs. While there is no single reason as to why a child might start using illegal substances, many common issues that cause teenagers to become substance abusers are issues that parents can solve, therefore the best way to persuade a child not to use drugs is by persuading the parent to be a more powerful influence.
The importance of preventing children from drug usage starts at early ages. Education and school facilities can only occupy children for 7-8 hours a day. The rest of the afternoon leaves children vulnerable to negative influences. Most children use after-school programs as a way to stay out of trouble, escape the turmoil of being abused at home, or spend time with youth instead of being lonely and alienated.
Drugs on the brain is not a new occurance with troubles in our daily lives. One of us at least has haved a loved one who was addicted to misusing the substances in one way or another. The effects could harm the person who is using, or even the surrounding peers and friends, even family. It is an impact that has happened all over the globe, and has no sign of getting better. That is unless we can influence kids more and more to stay away from them and the misuse.
Drugs can Long lasting effects on the developing brain and may interfere with family, positive peer relationships and school performances. Most adults develop a substance use disorders report having started drug use in adolescence or young adulthood, so it is important to identify and intervene in drug use early. Adolescents can benefit from a drug abuse intervention even if they are not addicted to a drug. Substance use disorders range from problematic use to addiction and can be treated successfully at any age. For young people, any drug use , is cause for concern, as it exposes them to dangers from the drug and associated with the risky behaviors and may lead to more drug use in the future. Parents and other adults should monitor young people and not underestimate the significance of what may appear as isolated instances of drug taking. Routine annual medication visits are an opportunity to ask adolescent about drug use. Standardized screening tools are available to help pediatricians, dentist ,emergency room doctors psychiatrist, and other clinician determinants and adolescent level of involvement in tobacco, alcohol, and illicit and nonmedical prescription drug use. When an adolescent reports substance use, the health care provider can assess its severity and either provide an onsite brief intervention or refer the teen to a substance abuse treatment program. Legal interventions and sanctions or family pressure may play an important role in getting adolescents to enter stay in, and complete treatment. Adolescents with substance use disorders rarely feel they need treatment and almost never seek it on their own. Research shows that treatment can work even if it is mandated can work even if it entered into unwillingly. Substance use disorders treatment should be trailered to the unique needs of the adolescent. Treatment planning begins with a comprehensive assessment to
More than twenty-two million people of age twelve or older use illegal drugs in the U.S.(Drug Abuse Symptoms, Facts, and Statistics). Drugs can affect teens in many ways they don't realize. Many teens do drugs, and they don't seem to care. Those teens may not know the facts, the effects on their health, nor the effects on their mental well-being.
Drug abuse is known to be a negative aspect on children's’ lives. Drug abuse is seen as the norm of today and thought of as a gateway from depression, stress, anxiety, and many other things teens suffer from today. It also comes from what the children are introduced to at home from their legal guardian. Even though drugs have been around and abused for quite some time now, drug abuse is at an all time high in today’s time. Some may wonder the question: How did drugs become the norm of today? Well, you see it everywhere. Places such as social media, tv shows, movies, and even the songs you hear everyday on the radio. It’s hard to even ignore the thought of drugs simply because it is plastered everywhere you go and mentioned in everything you hear. As adolescents, we are easily influenced by what we hear or see because our minds sometimes lack maturity. However, it must be realized that drugs are not the “cool” thing to do. To better understand them, it is important to know the different kind of drugs, the effects they have on your body and the consequences of using them.
