The election of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933 brought the United States into the new progressive reform. The New Deals and other active programs saved America from the Great Depression in 1930, especially about American culture. The themes and images in various cultural form frequently reflected Depression-related problem. Yet contradictory messages coexisted, sometimes within the same novel or movie. With American capitalism facing its worst crisis, radical expression of protest and revolution were more common than ever. But there were also strong celebrations of individualism, nostalgia for a simpler, rural past, and searches for core American virtues. Gene Roddenberry worked as a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman and as a speechwriter for Chief William H. Parker in the early 1950s as he attempted to gain a foothold in the entertainment industry. Fortunately, the LAPD regularly consulted for the police show Dragnet, giving Roddenberry the opportunity to develop his scriptwriting chops. He earned his first official television credit for an episode of Mr. District Attorney, and over the next decade he wrote for programs such as West Point, Naked City and Have Gun, Will Travel, for which he won his first Emmy Award. His story usually focused on the Western culture, military, and real life in American general. The audiences always liked his TV shows and movie series because it is realistic and connect to American society. The most famous one, Star Trek was the first science fiction series to depict a peaceful future, and Roddenberry often credited the enduring success of the series to the show's positive message of hope for a better tomorrow.
