How Did Industrialization Affect The Lives Of Workers

The Industrial Revolution was a major turning point in history that took place between 1760 and the mid 1800’s. During this time frame, a variety of different machines were invented and put in factories to make workers and everyday people’s lives easier. These machines had to be run by people such as women and even children because the men were mostly in coal mines. Some of the many negative consequences about these new jobs and new machines being invented were; child labor, physical abuse on the job, and unsafe working conditions. While some might argue that Industrialization had primarily positive consequences for society because more jobs became available, it was actually a negative thing.

Three groups that were affected by the Industrialization were middle and lower class, African Americans, and women rights. Middle and lower class workers were affected by Industrialization because the growth of the middle class had expanded, and professional employment had increased, but the lower class was the victims of the industrialization because the assembly line took a lot of the jobs of a lot of workers (Gilder Lehrman Institute, 2009). The Industrial Revolution has had a major effect on society, there were several major inventions during the period of time between approximately 1750 - 1901. We also are seeing the impact of the Industrial Revolution and how it has effected our environment and even how we conduct war.

From hand to machine, the Industrial Revolution has greatly changed the world in the way things work. The Industrial Revolution has given us opportunities to be able to expand on what capabilities we can do today. People began to invent machines that helped with production in chemicals, iron, and etc. This helped prove the efficiency of development. As many things that this era in time has helped us with, it has also majorly impacted the Earth, negatively, in many ways.

The Industrial Revolution occurred between the 18th and 19th century. During this time, society was experiencing major changes in agriculture, manufacturing, mining, transport and many other aspects. These changes had a massive effect on economic and socioeconomic factors in many parts of the world. For this reason, many workers opted to have their children and wives join the workforce. Given that these factory owners had no legal restrictions on exploiting workers, they exploited most of their workers. Worker were force to work long hours in a dehumanizing environment while earning poor pay and incentives . Women and children were also exploited. Woman and children were paid the lowest possible wages. It didn’t matter if they worked more than their adult male counterparts. Management used the deceptive ideology that woman and children should be under the care of a man and do not require a living wage. In addition to low wages and long hours, many workers worked in a dangerous environment. Many worked in crowded and unsanitary conditions. As a result thousands of workers were injured and hundreds were killed each year .

This revolution introduced many notable drawbacks in certain people’s lives which continue to pose communal threats today, along with a diversity of assistance to the same people at that time. As previously mentioned, child labour and horrific working conditions were arguably the biggest flaws of this period. After analysing “The Sadler Report”, one can observe that increasing amounts of child labor used to manufacture goods in factories with working conditions which dropped to such an extent as to increasing their working hours to 16 hours a day with one forty minute break, demonstrated not only the necessity of such labor, which eventually profits into the factories’ financial system, but the further impact of the lives of these children who were desperate for minimalistics wages. Soon, the lives of these children were dependant on these second-rate conditions of these factories, and as they were often exposed to hazardous chemicals and dangerous machinery, these conditions began to raise important questions towards the end of the revolution.
