How Did Joseph Stalin Rise To Power

Joseph Stalin was one of the most ruthless, brutal, and transformative leaders of the 20th century. His paranoia fueled purges along with many of his other policies resulted in the deaths of millions of people. Known as the “man of steel” or his other alias “Koba”, he inflicted fear on his worst enemies and elicited a grudging respect from his colleagues in the Communist Party. He was also a master politician, manipulating both people and situations to work his way to the top. Several factors contributed to and ultimately resulted in Stalin emerging as the leader of the USSR. The major factors that contributed to Stalin’s rise as leader of the USSR were dissatisfaction with Tsarist rule and the ensuing chaos resulting from its overthrow, Stalin’s relationship with Lenin which allowed him to gain important leadership positions in the Communist Party, and Stalin’s political acumen for using his leadership positions and forming the proper political alliances to discredit and ultimately purge any opposition to his power. Stalin had always been in awe of Lenin, referring to him as “the mountain eagle of our party, the great man” (Lenin, Stalin, and Hitler 136). Stalin’s ruthlessness, commitment, and intellectual abilities during the communist struggle against the Tsar’s regime earned the respect of Lenin as well (Lenin, Stalin, and Hitler 137). As a result, Lenin pushed for and got Stalin on the Bolshevik Central Committee. By 1922, Stalin sat on most the major committees within the Communist Party (the politburo, orgoburo, and the secretariat). These powerful appointments would have been impossible without the positive relationship that Stalin had with Lenin.
