How Did Roman Architecture Influence Architecture

The history of their architecture runs virtually in step with the history of their empire to an extent. As the Empire expanded so did the architecture, and as Romans became more magnificent their architecture followed. Roman architecture began as a form of worship. The first Roman architects were the ancient priests and dwellers who made areas of sacrifice and worship for their gods. At first, their homes were simple huts but as they grew smarter and more aware of their surroundings, making the building more complex than ever. So, like many arts, Roman architecture’s roots are embedded in the worshiping paid in religion. The Romans were, of course, not the first to practice many of their building philosophies. However, they built like no other society before them. Their methods showed and proved, efficiency and sophistication to construct a whole new look. With the rise of the Romans and the everlasting hail of Caesar after Caesar and Emperor after Emperor, Roman architecture expanded and influenced building over the world. Unlike the Empire, though, Roman design did not die at the hands of the Germanic’s, or rather at the hands of self-destruction; it continued to expand and play a part in every major style throughout history. The Romans were known for their architecture which included their arch and dome creations which have been used in construction today. The Romans were big on the use of concrete which is also widely used today. The Romans are remembered for one of their most beautiful buildings known as the Pantheon. The Pantheon’s design is used in the U.S. today on most government buildings in Washington D.C. and all over the rest of the country. The Romans were also known for their magnificent coliseum. Today we used the coliseum’s design to build our modern day stadiums for sporting

Roman technology contributed to the expansion and governance of the ancient Roman Empire through the construction of numerous engineering feats. Innovative bridges, tunnels, roads, concrete, and aqueducts that arose from the blueprints of Roman engineers who pushed for the modernization of the Empire. ¨Recent research by U.S. and Italian scientists has shown that Roman concrete was vastly superior.¨ (Labate) Therefore, many of the structures still stand today due to the Romans perfecting certain materials. Some of the buildings have even outlived modern day versions.

Even though I must right about concrete and the arch, I can not start without saying that Roman development can easily impress anyone who have the opportunity to find out about their stunning innovations, on such early times. The architecture was a key way of reflecting how culturally superior, wealthy, and skilled Rome really was. The Roman use of concrete, brick, and arches allowed popular building designs like the basilica and amphitheater to be done. Some more examples in which concrete, brink, and arches were utilized were on bridges, temples, theaters, as well as walls. It gave mankind buildings that they never have seen before. It provided citizens an appeal. Today, we are still drawn to beautiful spaces and buildings. Roman architecture was a very large part of Roman culture. Architecture in Rome was not solely created by the Romans, but was influenced greatly by other cultures such as the Greeks and the Etruscans.This is demonstrated by the examples of other civilization’s architecture within the Roman Empire.The combination of the cultures led to new types and styles of architecture, helping to create a style of Roman architecture which showed influences of Greece and the Etruscans. Roman architecture has its own elements and techniques while reflecting the influence of other cultures architecture on their own.

Architectural design was one of the greatest contribution made by Rome in the history of art. During the age of Emperor Trajan (98-117 CE) and Emperor Hadrian (117-138 CE) Rome reached to the peak of its architectural grandeur which was attained through construction of several buildings like monuments, baths, canals, palaces, temples and mausoleums.
