How Did The Olympics Influence Ancient Greek Culture

In 776 B.C a new era began for athletes. The first olympic games were held in Olympia, Greece. “The ancient games were not only an expression and definition of common cultural values, but also an arena for intense competition between Greeks.” (Gold, silver, and bronze) The olympics were an important part of Ancient Greece culture because, it brought their civilization together, kept the greeks fit and ready for war, and the games were used to satisfy their gods. The olympic games were held every four years and lasted for five days. The first day was for sacrifices and the festivals, while the judges and competitors took oaths of fair dealing. The next three days were competition days, men competed in running, jumping, wrestling, horse and chariot, and pankration. The final day was for sacrifices, and a banquet was held for the winners. The winners received a crown of wild olive. Days before the Olympics people from all over Greece traveled to Olympia and camped on the plains. During this time wars were stopped or postponed three months in advance so everyone could travel to the games safely. “The Olympic games satisfied the Greek ideal-- that a healthy body was necessary for a well balanced mind.” ( Quinnell, 156)All over Greece every boy practice the five parts of the pentathlon, ( running, jumping, discus, javelin throwing, and wrestling) hoping that one day they would be able to represent their city in the event. Competitors trained year around to get ready for the games. Greece was known to be one of the most powerful civilization during this era.
