When the European explorers/conquistadors such as Hernán Cortes found the Americas which they referred to as the New World, Catholic missionaries flooded the land. Catholic monarch Isabella believed that the Indios were naive people who needed to be saved. She didn't want the Spanish men going to the New World to mistreat or enslave the Indios because she believed that God wanted them to become Catholics. The priest sent to the New World believed that the Mayan hieroglyphics were evil and that they worshiped the Devil. So during the Spanish conquest the Spaniards destroyed a lot of the hieroglyphics and burned their books. Also Cortés had caused the fall of the Mechica capital Tenochitlan and Pizaro caused the fall of the Inca empire. Millions

Originally of the Italian descent Christopher Columbus in 1492, the Spanish were the dominant group of settlers in the New World for over a century or so. They were also abundant with natural resources like silver, as well the labor provided by the Native Americans created an immense amount of wealth for Spain. Excluding Brazil, the Spanish expanded throughout Central and South America even including Southern and Western parts of today’s United States, and the Caribbean Islands as well. However, due to the sheer amount of wealth created from the New World, forced European countries to eventually develop their own interests in settlements. In the late 1500’s, the English began their own mild exploration but their first permanent settlement was

The Spanish Conquest impacted the Aztec society’s beliefs and way of life. The Aztec empire was a wealthy and a well-organized society. It was an empire that people from Europe had never seen before. There are many mixed feelings about the impact of the Spaniards in the new world. Some experts view it as negative and others believed there were many positive results of this conquest. Regardless if we agree whether the conquest was positive or negative, there is no doubt that the Spanish conquest was the beginning of the end for the Aztec empire. An empire that had their own set of beliefs filled with exotic mythology and legends.
When the Spanish twelve first landed in Mexico their primary purpose was a religious conversion. In the letter, they were told, “you will for a long time endure such great hardships and continuous vigils” (Francisco de los Angeles P.1). This demonstrated that the Spanish knew that the conquest was going to be a struggle to convert the Natives who had their own idolatry beliefs. The Indigenous people were thought as being controlled by Satan, which is why they had expected them to rebel against the Catholic ways. However, to the Indigenous people were against it because they believed that their gods controlled the earth’s elements that had helped them stay alive. Things such as the sun, moon, rain, war, and etc. If they were to stop worshipping the gods they truly thought provided for them, then they would chance that their natural supplies would stop and the end of the world would come. When addressing the Spanish-American War, and the changes that it ushered in for America, it’s important to look at more than just the war itself. The people involved in the war, weather individuals or groups of people, were the real force of change. From people who fought in the war itself, mindsets that emerged from the victory, or the economic advantages gained; all point to one important thing. America became a larger world power in the aftermath of the Spanish-American War.
The Spanish conquistadors wanted to convert the Aztecs to their Christian faith. There are three main theories of how the Spaniards converted the Aztecs. The first theory was the belief that the Aztecs suspected Cortez to be a god returning to claim his lands. The second theory was that the Spaniards forced the Aztecs to convert to Christianity. The last theory was the belief that Spanish missionaries blended the Native and Christian religion to easily convert the Aztecs. During this blend of religious ideas, however, many Spaniards, intrigued with the customs of the Aztecs, adopted some beliefs of the Aztecs, fusing these beliefs into their own religious practices. The combination of all three theories eventually caused the conversion of the Aztecs to Christianity. The Aztecs first viewed these acts of conversion as attacks on their ideology, but most Aztecs succumbed to the Spaniard’s conversion tactics. After the Aztec-Spanish war, Aztecs who wished to become Catholic were allowed to retain the assets of their property, which was a major incentive. Catholicism became the religion of Mesoamerica, as it is to this day. Another reason why the Aztec-Spanish War was a significant event in the Spanish colonization of the Americas is that for the first time, alliances with natives in surrounding areas
When it comes to the topic of the Spanish-American War of 1898, most Americans may believe humanitarian aspects influenced the United States’ role in Cuba. In a way, the public thought America would be “freeing” Cuba from the atrocities the Spaniards had laid upon them. One source about the reconcentration camps outlines what the Cubans faced, “Four hundred and sixty women and children thrown on the ground, heaped pell-mell as animals, some in a dying condition, others sick and others dead…” Sources such as these portrayed aspects of “yellow journalism” which exaggerated stories and influenced the emotions of the American public. Where the people’s argument ends, is whether or not freeing Cuba from Spanish rule was the sole reason behind American
The word enconmienda means the Spanish going to the New World. The Spanish tried to designate the status of the Indian population in the American colonies. The original plan of encomienda was to cut down on the unwilling labor assigned after the discovery of the New World. 'The encomienda influenced several kinds of colonial economic relations, although it varied geographically in Spanish America, and chronologically between 1493 and the early nineteenth century.(Baskes)" The first encomienda in the Americas, was distributed by Christopher Columbus. The conquistadors accepted rewards from a number of Indians. The rewards that the conquistadors received were in gold. The encomienda system severely rooted in Spanish American history. It is considered by many historians as one of the most damaging institutions that the Spanish colonists implemented in the New World(Busbin). The Spanish crown approved of the grants of the encomiendas because the conquistadors needed to be rewarded.
Cuban insurgents considered the victory theirs, but it was obvious it was the Americans. Even the British correspondents who had once derided their American cousins esteemed differently. Spanish forces consolidated and resisted at Fort Canosa, then an American siege of the city happened, which was aided by Cuban forces. A much deadlier enemy came upon the Americans; malaria and yellow fever, which caused more deaths than Spanish bullets. Despite the Spaniards’ advantage in numbers and weaponry, because of the deaths of the disease, American forces pushed inland. The Spanish fleet only lasted hours on July 3.
In the 16-century on November 1519, Cortes and his men arrived in Tenochtitlan. Hernan Cortés and his army came to South America (Tenochtitlan) to claim new land for Spain. The Aztecs had a nomadic culture and eventually settled on many small islands in Lake Texcoco in 1325 where they founded the town known as Tenochtitlan, which is now a modern day Mexico City. The Aztecs created an empire between the 15th century that was soon surpassed in size in the Americas only by that of the Incas.

On the Philippines. The second war happened in the Caribbeans, after that the Americans troops invaded Puerto Rico on July 25. In 1898 both the United States and Spain met in Paris to agree on a treaty. While talking Spain freed Cuba and turned over the islands of Guam in the Pacific and Puerto Rico in the West Indies to the United States. Spain also sold the Philippines to the US for $20 million. The treaty of Paris is what ended the Spanish American

The Europeans had better weapons as well, so it was easier to enslave the Natives and succumb them to more disease. So, it was an epidemic of the highest
The military fierce fully took property through killing. On the other hand the church implemented religion more peacefully then the military. Although many religions were brought and presented to Mesoamerican cultures Christianity was the major religion that had most impact. Another difference that church conquest had was that it targeted the person’s beliefs and it was mental unlike the military conquest that physically took there belongs and land. The indigenous people lost their religion like they lost their land, which they had for a substantial amount of time. These two impacts in Mesoamerica had a long-term affect on its
After hearing about the success with the Spanish colonies other European groups wanted to set up shop in the new world to get the riches that lied within. So a group of European merchants decided to finance expeditions to the new world. These merchants were hoping to find or trade for riches out of the new settlement. But when they arrived they found nothing but a mosquito infested swampy area which they built their settlement on.
