I was so happy to receive this letter from Catherine Albertine Cobb and Jason Rabinowitz today. Working people standing together! #Teamsters2010 Local has PROVED that standing together does result in victory. With a positive attitude that we will prevail in this struggle, we will carry a message of hope for a better future for everyone as we all stand together in
Through Tiffany Dean Loftin’s presentation, I gained a newfound understanding of the complex union leadership structure along with the power of grassroots organizing that can connect workers of color and immigrants. Like Loftin, I found it very frustrating that unions like the AFL-CIO are slow to embrace social causes like racial justice and immigration reform because they have enormous power to push for policy changes, as demonstrated by Samuel Gompers and the National Quota Act of 1924. Similar, stagnated union leadership can be a key factor in blocking social progress. As described in her presentation, it is often difficult to navigate and direct policy changes when the leadership is made up of a coalition of different people with different
Since the birth of the USA, labor unions have played a critical role in the battle between capital and labor. Labor unions keep workers safe and happy while giving them the chance to bargain with the capital for pay raises. Labor unions also have led to declines in US dominance in areas such as steel, automotive, education and airlines. The rise of capitalism as the main economical system in the United States made the rise of unions un-avoidable.
Campaigning is something that is done in many aspects of life. It breaks down to basically creating arguments to sell yourself or your company to a group of people. President hopefuls set out on a campaign trail every four years to try and get people to vote for them. I always thought that this was the only form of campaigning, but I was incorrect. Employers and Unions both use campaigning to get workers to either avoid, or join a union. Each side has their own tactics and goals to achieve. I plan to analyze both sides and show the pros and cons of each.
Unions allow workers to fight for what they believe in, gives them a chance to have a vote and a voice and to protests against the things that are not fair. The flip side of this is that workers can be out of work; if they picket or protest for days, weeks or months until some agreement is reached if any.
Oscar Wilde claims that disobedience is man’s original virtue. There is clearly truth to that statement. Our history is an example; we wouldn’t have made any progress; if our ancestors hadn’t been disobedience. The colonist’s were some of the first to be disobedience; hence, the Boston Tea Party. Martin Luther King Jr. “nonviolent civil disobedience”. Rosa Parks refused to obey the bus driver. These are some examples that disobedience is a valuable human trait.
Lastly, unions improve working conditions and rights of the employees. In the past, workers had to go through harsh working conditions such as dangerous workplace and long hours of shift with a low wage. With having the unions around, they were able to improve these problems. When a demand isn’t met, a unionized worker can tell the union their issue’s and the union will handle it by talking with the employers. Most often the rights of the employees aren’t really protected because the employers take advantage of them. “Research has shown convincingly that unions have played a significant role in enforcing these laws and ensuring that workers are protected… Unions make a substantial and measurable difference in the implementation of labor laws.
Labor unions are designed to organize an association of workers, often in a profession or trade, which are formed in order to protect and build further right and interests for individuals in the organizations. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics who issued a Union Members Summary on Thursday, January 28 2016 stated that there is an estimated 14.8 million members in the United States today. These union member represent a wide range of industries and occupations, and are in sectors that include the public and government.
This was a great outcome for us all, as Councillors have made the commitment to invest in their staff and are allowing us to create a workplace that will better facilitate our ABW work style and new shared Philosophy.
I never this project would have such a big impact on me and my co-wworkers. I also did not realize how one project can bring a community more closer than anyone in the community could imagine.
If you look back through history you'll see that a lot of times cultural change was brought about with war and fighting. When the colonials pushed for independence from Great Britain, they waged war. War was previously seen as the only way to get what you want. It seemed to be the only way of getting things done. Now a days we're finding that method isn't that helpful and rather ruins a lot of things.
Broken windows, car alarms, smoke in the air, the frantic screams of those who are attacked by the raids of police officers are what come with the world of violent protest. Violent protest to a variety of people may lead to a conclusion, but not for all of them. With nonviolent protest our words are used as our weapons. We speak with the freedom of the first amendment, the right to civil disobedience and the satisfaction that we solved our issues in a justifiable manner. All around the globe we crave the immediate satisfaction of emotional rebellion regardless of the impact, which is why nonviolent protest is more effective than violent protest.
As we stand here today of this great nation, we celebrate, not the winning of sides, but celebrate the unity of our great country. We have been in a storm of chaos, wanting change, fearing that we will divide once again, but we will stand firm together to fight for peace and equality. For way too long, have the capital of our great nation taken the rewards of our government while the people suffer the cost. Washington has thrived, but the people do not get to share in its success. While we celebrate our nation's great success, there is still little to celebrate as for struggling families of our nation’s, but this all can change starting right here right now because this is your moment, your spotlight, and your triumphs. What truly matters right
We as humans will stick together to support or fight a common cause, Because of disasters allowing people to donate to help the damage or come over to that country and to physically help people that are hurt or clean up the wreckage. People will rally to fight a government law of some sort that affects many people and is hurtful to the citizens of that state or country. Finally the third reason is that humans will help support a disease that affects tons of people worldwide.
“Your organization is doing important work in the communities you serve, and we are proud to support you
Today was the first time in months I had a flashback of the wartime. The strike was nothing like I imagined. We held a parade to protest the mayor’s actions, firing civic workers, arresting strike leaders and appointing special police to control the strikers. All of a sudden, some people in front of us overturned a streetcar and started to set it on fire. I already knew we were in big trouble. As the smoke from the car raised, the NWMP armed with clubs and pistols charged the crowd. Many were being arrested as well. This strike was no longer peaceful. Everyone rushed to get away from the police, others stayed there to show their rage. I had rushed to home as soon as possible. All I could remember was a 40 year old male getting beat
