ASDs are considered ‘spectrum’ disorders because each patient has a unique experience in the nature and severity of their symptoms (Center for Disease Control). Under the umbrella of ASDs, there are three types of disorders, including Autistic disorder, Asperger Syndrome, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (Center for Disease Control). Autistic disorder is the most severe of the three, and patients exhibit significant problems with language, communication, and behavior (Center for Disease Control). Furthermore, people with Autistic disorder often have some intellectual impairment (Center for Disease Control). Asperger Syndrome is a milder form of autistic disorder where patients have some developmental delays, but their language and intellect are not affected (Center for Disease Control). The mildest of the ASDs is the pervasive developmental disorder. These patients usually don’t meet all of the criteria for autistic disorder, but do show some signs of social and communication problems (Center for Disease Control). The number of children diagnosed with ASD is growing, and currently 1 in 88 children fall somewhere on the spectrum (Mari-Bauset et al., 2013). Autism is a disorder that I seem to hear more about every day. I hear about it on the television news, in news articles online, and even personal blogs that I read. It seems that everyone has some knowledge of autism and most people know someone personally that it affects. As far as my own personal knowledge and experience of the disorder, I learned it at camp. I have volunteered many years for at Camp Tik-A-Witha. This camp provides a week long session for children with special needs (mental and physical handicaps) called Elizabeth Gwin Session. Autism affects people in many different ways. First, There are multiple levels of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Some people are affected by A.S.D ( Autism Spectrum Disorder) differently. Some have more trouble with understanding than others. “A kid's symptoms could be very mild, severe, or somewhere in the middle. Someone with mild symptoms might need only a little bit of help. But a kid with severe symptoms might need a lot of help with learning and doing everyday stuff” (Source 3). Next, “People with autism may struggle with speaking, expressing their emotions, and understanding the emotions of others. Some people with autism have extreme sensitivities to sound or touch” (Source 2) A.S.D affects everyone differently, no one with A.S.D is exactly the same.

People with autism may have poor verbal skills, poor eye contact and socialization skills, as well as adjusting to and making changes. Temple Grandin provided an example of what it feels like for people with autism to lack social skills. She stated that it’s like “being trapped between windows, unable to communicate through the glass” (p. 20). Temple did not have many friends in school and her peers called her names such as a “tape-recorder” (p. 17) because she constantly repeated things. Grandin also had difficulty when transitioning from high school to college, which was a big change for her.
