Daylight Saving Time (DST) is and has been harming America in many ways. Even though DST was brought into action in 1918 for the first time to save electricity during World War 1. Today DST causes Complications in many ways. It throws off many people’s sleep schedules and regular routines. From keeping kids awake longer at night to disturbing the schedules of American airlines with foreign airlines. According to Perau, U.S. airlines are so off sync with foreign airlines that many millions of dollars are anticipated to be lossed. The problem is American airlines lost connections with overseas flights because of DST. DST also increases the use of gasoline, because people are driving for longer period of time throughout the day in the summer time. …show more content…
DST is associated with sleep disruptions and possibly more serious consequences (O’Connor). Lack of sleep is not the only reason DST is hurting America, there's more. “Nevertheless there is surprisingly little evidence that DST saves energy” (Kotchen). Even though DST was originally created to save energy it actually increase electricity demands in some residents. If DST was stopped we would actually lower electricity usage. “According to the dates of the DST practice prior to 2007, we estimated cost to Indiana households of $9 million per year and increase electricity bills. Estimates of the social cost due to increased pollution emissions ranges from $1.7 to $5.5 million per year” (Kotchen). If DST is continued this could be a problem all over America, not just
There is more population outside, taking satisfaction of an extra hour of daylight and fewer criminals out waiting for their subsequently victim. In fact, motor vehicle vs. pedestrians accidents were reduced by “8-11%” just by that extra daylight hour several lives were
Daylight Savings Time, or DST, has shown a vast increase in energy conservation. “America’s electricity usage is reduced by about one percent each day that Daylight Savings Time is in effect” (Longley). through the use of statistics, New York Times was able to publicize the amount of energy conserved due to Daylight Savings Time. Although 1% may seem like nothing, over the 9 month period DST lasts, it starts to add up. Without DST, electricity bills would be thorough the roof. Taxes would also start to rise which would cause chaos throughout the society.
This knowledge has been evident since 1942 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued a year round daylight savings time to conserve energy during World War II. This set the precedent for other states to adopt a similar change after the termination of the war in 1945 (Source A). The second World War was a time in history where resources were scarce and conservation of energy was critical because any surplus energy went towards the soldiers fighting overseas. Although today our society’s circumstance is not as dire, the notion to save energy still persists, and it is conclusive that daylight savings time would be even more successful during today’s time of relative peace. Studies also show that “America’s electricity usage is reduced by about one percent each day that daylight savings time is in effect.” (Source B). This one percent reduction per day makes a significant imprint on conservation when viewed at the end of daylight savings time. Overall, an extra month of synthetic sunshine is a key factor in saving energy and the
According to a New York times article written by Anahad O’Connor (Source E). Our body runs in a circadian rhythm which uses daylight to determine the time of day and how we are feeling. Every time daylight savings comes around this rhythm is thrown off. While these facts are still being studied and are still up for debate it is important to take these threatening hazards into consideration. O’Connor says, “Other studies have suggested links between time change and increases in heart attacks, suicides, and accidents, though scientists say more study is needed.” These studies can be shown as a very important reason on why DST is more than just a time difference. It is affecting our well being and this is proving that DST is having a negative effect. In an experiment conducted by Matthew Kotchen and Laura Grant (Source F) they provided statistics on energy consumption in the spring and fall. Energy consumption is not constant throughout DST which proves that it can not be used as a way to save
Daylight saving can be good for the environment, Because of the less amount of the pollution being created by power plants, But there is a problem when it comes to daylight saving, the major problem is how it will affect people's lives on a daily basis who work daytime jobs and children who have to go to school ? Daylight saving effects would be strong but the effects can be diminished, simply by setting the time daylight savings takes place to a time when the sun is up and it can be safe to walk to school or work for people, and now it's safer for people and better for the environment and its resources.
Many parents and students believe that school starts too early,I agree with them school hours should be pushed back. But some may argue why would this be necessary,or what can this change affect them. This change is beneficial for the students,in many ways such as conduct, grades, and tardies that is why pushing back school one hour will help and I will tell you how.
Daylight Saving time is the system that people clocks are turned forward an hour in spring and backward in fall, which effectively move an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening. We can obtain an additional hour of daylight in the evening while we lose it in the morning. In most of the developed countries in the world, Daylight saving time (DST) is thought to be encouraged as a method for energy conservation because of high energy prices and advancement of energy conservation. However, there may be no evidence of energy saving and we may find some evidence of modest increase in usage of energy and demand. In addition, DST might cause negative impact on hour health due to lack of sleep and burden of shifting rhythm. It might be true that DST has some advantages. Nevertheless, if DST has more negative effects than positive, it should be stopped immediately or we should adjust our use of DST so that it is better and least harmful.
Daylight savings is the act of setting clocks back an hour in March and setting them back in November; this is done as way to reduce the consumption of energy. Many claim that daylight savings has proven effective in reducing the usage in energy and helpful in other areas such as safety. However, others claim that daylight savings has not made an impact on energy usage and that it can affect the way people function. While daylight savings has proven effective in some areas, daylight savings should not be continued because of the individual effects it has on people’s mood and behavior.
Farmers state that grain grows the best after dew vanishes, so when the worker arrives late and leaves early the work is less valuable.Daylight during the day is more exceptional than when the sun goes down.Dairy farmers also does not agree with the time changing, because the cows hypersensitive when they want to be milked. Also when their milk needs to be transported earlier than regular time, there whole operation messes up. Farmers strongly disagree with DST because it disarrays the whole concept.
“Manifest Destiny”- a term which was commonly used in 1900s during the presidency of James K. Polk means that America was destine to expand throughout the continent (313). After the Louisiana Purchase, the United States continued to expand its border westward by gaining the territory from Mexico. During this geographic expansion, slavery was one of the most controversial issues in the United States. American, especially Southerners, not only expanded their country geographically but also transplanted their “slavery culture” to every land that they settled in by bringing slave labors to the new land. This expansion has both negative and positive effects on America’s economy and politics.
As a member of the National Rural Electric Company I am presenting to you the idea of cutting off the carbon dioxide limitations is not the brightest of decisions. It will change the world as we know it.
As many are aware, the four main time zones were created because the railroads. Before time zones took place, scheduling arrival times were a nightmare. Time zones today are very helpful and they give us a better understanding of when a delivery may occur. Without the big railroad companies taking it upon themselves to create time zones, we would more than likely still be using one local time. Confusion would hit the ceiling about when a delivery may take place somewhere across the states. Also, if you take away time zones, you take away day light savings. If ou take away day light savings, you take away an extra hour of sleep in March.
It's 6 am, still pitch black outside, you can't even hear the sound of birds chirping, and yet we as students are forced to fight our body clocks in order to get to class on time. Every morning thousands of students across the nation are awaked by the dreadful sound of their alarm clocks. It's no secret that not getting the sufficient amount of sleep can lead to many problems, especially in teens. For that reason, both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Center for Disease Control both recommend moving middle-and-high-school start times to 8:30 am, or later. Yet most recent studies show that during the year 2011-12 only 17.7% of the US’s public middle and high schools met the quota, and in over 40 US states 75% percent of schools begin earlier than 8:30.
America — the land of the free, and the home of the brave — is considered to be one of the most powerful and influential countries on the planet. Through its impressive history as a world power and its exuberant impact on the global stage, a glance inwards shows that the United States of America is no longer the shining city upon a hill that it once was. As the country stands, it falls short of being the beacon of aspiration that it so longs to be, failing to live up to the image that so many of its people have. With an ever-increasing number of economic issues, inconsistently poor infrastructure, haphazardly structured standardized education, and a myriad of social issues that ranges from an obesity pandemic, poorly handled immigration, and
The natural gasses produced from fracking have been abundant, cheap, and clean, making it a convenient source of energy. In fact, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said “In Pennsylvania shale gas has contributed $7 billion to Pennsylvania’s gross domestic product” (Argumentative Text). Additionally, shale gas has contributed $7 billion, but that number would change in 2015. If people come together and help eliminate energy waste manufacturers will save $100 billion before the end of the decade. Therefore, when people turn off lights while they’re not using them, it will save a tremendous amount of money for the manufacturers. Also, natural gas is cleaner than other fossil fuels, including coal, oil, and tar sands. Because natural gasses are cleaner than other
