This book was meant to teach the reader on the inhumanity of slavery. It also gives us the image of what happened during the past years when slavery was practised.

In the nineteenth century, the idea of abolishing slavery was a sensitive topic in the United States. John Greenleaf Whittier was not shy about his belief that slavery should be abolished from the whole country. With the United States on the brink of a civil war, Whittier published his poems and gave slaves a new voice. It’s because of his strong belief in abolishment that I can relate to Whittier’s writings. Although I was not alive in the nineteenth century, nor was anyone I know that is alive today, slavery is still a relevant topic to me.

No one in today’s society can even come close to the heartache, torment, anguish, and complete misery suffered by women in slavery. Many women endured this agony their entire lives, there only joy being there children and families, who were torn away from them and sold, never to be seen or heard from again.
