Holmes first asserts that: “clear thinking, health, happiness, friendships, and prosperity” are necessary steps toward the attainment of spiritual realization; then he states that they are also the consequence of such a realization. However, given that we are used to thinking of cause and effect as sequential, one may well wonder how the qualities of a consciousness of well-being are supposed to be a cause, as well as an effect, of a spiritual realization. It seems as though Holmes wishes to have it both ways; and it seems that way because it is so. Consciousness is both a cause and an effect, in the sense that, it is the cause of our experience, and it is the effect of our thinking. We find a similar point of view in the writings of an earlier …show more content…
What may not be so apparent is the purpose, or reason for the creative process: we plant seeds to get more seeds. In the process of accomplishing that purpose, we get plants, flowers, fruits and all of the products that make for an enjoyable life; even so, if the process of sowing seeds does not beget more seeds, it is not fulfilled, or fulfilling. This simple fact of nature provides an analogy for the creativity of the mind; and if thinking good thoughts does not beget more good thoughts, then we have not fulfilled the process. Simply put, the reason to think in a loving way is to be able to express and experience more loving thoughts. Certainly, in the process, there will be a growth in the number of one's friends, and an increase in the opportunity to enjoy being a lovely person; however, if loving thoughts do not result in a more loving consciousness, then one will be unfulfilled. We do not love others in order to gather more friends and loved ones, but to be more loving. Being loving is both the means and the end, the cause and the effect, of a loving consciousness, because one's consciousness is not only the cause, but also the effect, one has in
Sherlock Holmes used deduction to solve mysteries. Firstly, by using deduction, Holmes can tell a lot from Mr. Wilson. For example, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, an author, shares how Holmes used deduction to solve the mystery of the Red Headed League (Doyle). Thus, Holmes is a very smart man that knows how to pick apart a mystery. Secondly, Holmes deduced that Helen came to see him by train and rode on muddy roads. For instance, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle reports that Holmes deduced that Mrs. Stoner’s step father is violent (Doyle). Therefore, Holmes can solve any mystery by deduction. Thirdly, Holmes looks at the evidence and concludes that Mrs. Violet is impersonating the prisoner in the wing. To illustrate, Sir Arthur Conan

It is part of the human nature to love and be loved by a friend, a relative, or a partner.
Crazies, loonies, insane, disabled, idiots, nuts, and schizos are just some of the many derogatory terms used to refer to the mentally ill. Mental illness is pushed under the rug and is considered a taboo subject in today’s world. Many think that since you cannot physically see psychiatric disorders, they are not real. Some believe people claim to have a mental illness so they can act out or not take responsibilities for one’s actions. So, even though we as a society are at the height of our research of mental illnesses and now know more than before, why do we still ignore it? Why do we not take it seriously? Sadly many, many people have been affected by the lack of communication concerning mental illness, its causes, and treatment. One of
Consciousness it is a state of awareness on both the external and internal actions and reaction toward different stimulus. Consciousness has greater impacts on our daily life and could influence survival of different organisms that lives on planet earth. The benefits is that it offers protection as it control the self .Consciousness regulate what we think and the reaction that we respond to the different experiences that we undergo on daily basis. Also, it allows us to either allow a thought or respond or terminating the thought as it might be not useful both the inner and outer experiences.
The essay states “ What a small word we use for an idea so immense and powerful it has altered the flow of history, calmed monsters, kindled works of art, cheered the forlorn, turned tough guys to mush, consoled the enslaved, driven strong women mad, glorified the humble, fueled national scandals, bankrupted robber barons, and made mincemeat of kings. The word love is so powerful that it changes people for the better or the worse. The feelings that come with love as stated by Ms.Ackerman “ Like a batik created for many emotional colors, it is a fabric whose pattern and brightness may vary.” Love may change a person's perspective on what love is suppose to be. Love is not just one thing, but a ray of different colors, emotions, and
In the passage, Fredrickson talks about how the body is designed to love and constantly craves it, but with that it can complicate the understanding of free will. Free will is the power of acting without the constraint of necessity or fate; the ability to act at one’s own discretion. Fredrickson basically states throughout the whole story that as humans we are designed to love, but personally do not have the
In his piece, “The Chambered Nautilus”, Holmes chooses the nautilus as a metaphor for the soul for many reasons. Human beings must continue working hard in order to grow spiritually and develop one’s soul, just like a nautilus who keeps on building new levels of his shell. Secondly, the spiral shape of the nautilus represents the idea the humans do not have a limit in terms of their spiritual growth. Thirdly, just as the nautilus’s progression of new levels of his shell only gets bigger, a person must only work on and achieve greater levels than they had in the past in order to grow and expand his soul.
In the world of psychology, there is a behavioral theory called “nature vs. nurture.” This theory suggests that all children are naturally good, that they are born with a blank slate, and they need mothering in order to become “human.” I believe there are certain things that someone needs to qualify as human. I think all infants are born naturally good, but it’s up to their guardians whether the infant turns out to be a good character. It is also up to you whether you want to be a good person with good values.
In an effort to explain the meanings and differences that exist between spirituality, theology and psychology, the author
Holmes uses different approaches to figure out or determine different things when he is solving a crime. When solving a crime he will use deduction and observation. He will also talk to others and investigate what is going on. Which will help him solve his crimes. Three ways that Holmes approaches crimes that could relate to my life are Observation, Research, and Deduction.
Imagine a world where everyday people were electrocuted, but not for crime. These people had depression. They had schizophrenia. They had anxiety issues. They had dementia. Under the blanket of mental illness, they were wrapped and tucked into their deathbeds by their families, under the foolish notation that the patients were to be helped and cured of their afflictions. During and before the 1920s, one of us in this room would be subject to horrendous treatment because we acted out of the social normalities. While psychology did advance in the 1920s, and while some were helped, countless others were maimed. As a whole, we as a society benefitted from the cultural-historical theory, but then the most vulnerable of individuals, both babies and
When Sherlock Holmes went undercover at the opium den, he was altering his identity and acting as a lower class citizen, therefore, being a possible risk for destabilizing the identity within the system. As Holmes disguised himself as completely unidentifiable by looking like a,” … very thin, very wrinkled, bent with age, an opium pipe dangling down from between his knees, as though it had dropped in sheer lassitude from his fingers” (pg.3), it changed his presumed class, for others assumed he was a drug addict that had lost all self control; he even ended up tricking Watson into believing his identity while uncover before revealing himself. Holmes’s performance was intended for his job and protecting the Empire, therefore, none of these action’s
For example, William James studied religious experience and suggested that the spiritual process works to curtail people's negative behaviors (James, 1936). For James, spirituality helps individuals recognize their own earthly suffering as either a consequence of individual pathology or addictive behavior, or both. When people begin to criticize or consciously reject problematic individual behaviors as a permanent way of being, then they become open to the possibility of rising to a higher awareness. This higher awareness of his or her own behavior is then integrated as a part of the person's psychology. James was already considering the role religion plays in a person's consciousness early in the twentieth century.
We do not seek love , love seeks us until we are ready to surrender until we have no resistance to it and then love comes it seeks us not the other way around is a huge blow to the egoistic side of human being the rational intellect which believes to conquer anything if willed not withstanding that only if the will cooperates with love’s true will then would anything be conquered . In ignorance to that we are nothing but being who opposes love , it is like our own cells have started to kill the cells of our body because their belief is autonomous function and individuality , loathing of the other infact what is loathed is one.
