The scene introduces Mercutio, Romeo's clever and witty friend. Mercutio's character is personally interesting because he is able to poke fun on Romeo's statements about love and dreams while humorizing it in a dark way at the same time (e.g. Quean Mab). This scene also is a subtle foreshadowing on Romeo's fate during the party which would engross the reader to keep reading and see what awaits
Mercutio is a member of the royal family, he neither a Montague or a Capulet, but because Romeo is his friend he stands on the Montagues side. Mercutio always says puns which makes the play more entertaining and interesting, for example when Romeo was in love with Rosaline, Mercutio says that love is too rough “If love be rough with you, be rough with love” through these word shows that Mercutio is straightforward. Mercutio urges Romeo to come to the ball "Nay, gentle Romeo, we must have you dance...You are a lover; borrow Cupid's wings, and soar with them above a common bound" (Act 1, Scene 4, Line 13-18), that's when Romeo and Juliet meet. Nonetheless Mercutio had such a broad personality that when he died, rest of the play didn’t have as much comedy and turned more to the dark
Mercutio has many roles in Romeo and Juliet, one being a colorful supporting character. Many know him as a comedian in the story who never takes anything to serious. However, without Mercutio the story we know today would not be the same. With his fun and outgoing personality Mercutio is an easy character to fall in love with. Being related to the prince and one of Romeo’s friends Mercutio shows up a lot through out the play. Unfortunately without the death of the loved and comedic character the famous ending of Shakespeare’s well-known

Shakespeare created many incredible plays during his lifetime: tragedies, comedies and histories. One of Shakespeare's most famous plays is the tragedy Romeo and Juliet. Furthermore, one of his greatest creations, as well as most memorable character, lies within the pages of this tale. Although he died early on, Mercutio spent his time entertaining the audience with every act and word. Throughout Romeo and Juliet, Mercutio displays notable acts of witty humor, loyalty and devotion to Romeo, as well as hot-headed rash behavior, which stick with the reader, even after his death.
The Importance of Mercutio's Role in Romeo and Juliet In Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet', each character plays a specific role. Mercutio, is essential to the play he is the 'Prince's kinsman', but more importantly, he is Romeo's best friend and confidant .Although Mercutio is Romeo's closest friend he is very jealous of Romeo when Romeo is with other people. Who Is Responsible for the Deaths of Romeo and Juliet? Why do people who mean well end up doing the opposite? William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet demonstrates how good intentions can lead to calamity. The impulsive behaviour of Mercutio, the selfishness of Lord Capulet, the lack of communication and the spontaneous action of Friar Lawrence are causes of Romeo and Juliet’s death. Though these characters all strived to do what they thought was best for the two lovers, their good intentions misguided Romeo and Juliet leading them to a death that could have been avoided.
Romeo and Juliet, one of the classics, written by Shakespeare himself. The story of two crossed-lovers, whose lives take a horrible turn because of an old family feud. The love between these two was so strong, they were willing to die for each other. Can you believe this all happened in 4 days? Although, the questions being asked is - who caused their deaths? If it hadn’t been for a few select people who did a certain thing, Romeo and Juliet might still be alive. Let me tell you who is to blame, Mercutio, Friar Laurence, and Romeo himself.
I believe that the most guilty for the death of Romeo and Juliet is Mercutio. Mercutio is the main source of the start of the chain of reactions leading to Romeo and Juliet’s deaths. To start with he is the reason Romeo met Juliet, specifically because if Mercutio had not told him to go to the party then he wouldn't have gone and met Juliet and none of this would have happened in the first place. Romeo even stated that going to the party was a bad idea hence the line “And we mean well in going to this mask, But ’tis no wit to go” but mercutio decided not to listen and they went anyway. Romeo would still instead be sad and depressed over Rosaline, which is a little better than being dead. He is also
I have chosen to write about Mercutio for this assignment. Mercutio, being Romeo's best friend, certainly has an influence on him. Whether is making raunchy jokes and comments that makes Romeo's mood better, or whether it's Mercutio trying to change Romeo's views on love and relationships. Mercutio's influence on Romeo may not be seen physically, but it definitely shows in mental aspects. The actions of Mercutio impact the ending in numerous ways.
He goes into a very long speech about ‘Queen Mab’, how she gives them dreams about love and how her chariot is a hazelnut shell. The whole speech is filled with funny sentences and anecdotes. It gives Romeo and all of his friends a lighter mood before they attend the supper. Mercutio is important to this story because he has the ability to make everybody laugh no matter how dire the situation is. The numerous depressing events are lightened by his humor. Mercutio is also significant because of his amazing loyalty to Romeo. He is not related to Romeo in any way, but he acts like a big brother. He is quick to defend him when Tybalt (a Capulet) talks about Romeo in a negative way and calls him a villain in front of him. “O calm dishonourable, vile submission! Alla stoccata carries it away. (draws his sword) Tybalt, you ratcatcher, will you walk?”(Shakespeare 3.1.72-75). Tybalt says one word about Romeo and Mercutio is enraged, with his sword, ready to fight. He argues back at Tybalt, saying his words are vile, which he feels very strongly about because he ready to kill him. He realizes that Romeo keeps protesting and doesn't want
Mercutio and Romeo have a loving friendship. Mercutio genuinely cares for Romeo’s wellness, which is communicated by his attempts to pull Romeo out of his depression. In addition to being a loyal companion, Mercutio is Romeo’s foil character or is his exact opposite. While Romeo is poetic, serious, and emotionally driven, Mercutio is silly and cynical, and believes love is as frivolous as a fairy. Romeo expresses his sadness over his loss of Rosaline to Mercutio,
In the play Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare tells the story of two star-crossed lovers and their family feud. Shakespeare features Romeo, who believes dreams hold irrefutable meaning and thus allows them to dictate his actions. On the other hand, Shakespeare also features Mercutio, who believes that dreams are simply figments of the imagination and hence should be disregarded. As the story follows this narrative, it becomes clear that Mercutio and Romeo’s view of dreams differ when it comes to interpreting the significance of dreams and the causation of dreams. Keeping this evidence in mind, Romeo and Juliet makes a striking comment on human life: those who seek more guidance in their life often turn to the idea of fate for comfort, while those who hold a more cynical outlook on life often believe fate to
Mercutio’s death scene is arguably one of the most iconic scenes from Romeo and Juliet, following the balcony scene. Personally, I prefer his death scene in the 1996 adaptation directed by Luhrmann over the 1968 adaptation by Zeffirelli. The first reason for this is due to the casting. Harold Perrineau plays Mercutio and Leonardo DiCaprio is casted as Romeo. Their actions and how the scene is set up is more entertaining than the 1968 version. For instance, Romeo is more involved in the battle between Mercutio and Tybalt unlike in the Zeffirelli adaption where he is held back most of the time. I believe it expanded the fight and made it more intense. Also, throughout the 1996 edition, the director allowed the viewers to connect and learn more
Mercutio is a funny character and also carefree. He goes secretly to the ball with Romeo.
