How Does Shakespeare Create Dramatic Tension In Romeo And Juliet

In “The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet”, Shakespeare adds dramatic irony throughout the story to add suspense and tension. Dramatic irony is when the readers know what is going to happen but the characters, however, do not. While reading, readers tend to become irritated at the characters actions because they know how the play is going to end. In Act IV, Shakespeare adds multiple situations of dramatic irony that makes the readers feel a sense of displeasure. What the characters don't know, is that their misinterpretations of the situation will lead to a sorrowful outcome.

This play is about a boy named Romeo and girl named Juliet. Their family are mortal enemies so that means that they are always fighting with one another. At a Capulet party Romeo and Juliet meet for the first time not knowing who each other are, until later that night that they are enemies. They begin to fall in love with each other and get married after meeting for one night. Then the drama gets to their head and they kill themselves. In Romeo and Juliet Capulet’s and Montague’s, Friar Lawrence, and Balthasar are responsible for the tragic deaths of Romeo and Juliet.

Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, tells the tale of two young lovers whose lives end in great tragedy. What makes their story so tragic is that despite their love for one another, their families are mortal enemies. Conflict is a central ingredient in Romeo and Juliet's sad fate. Romeo and Juliet is a story based on conflict. The conflict in the story is Capulet against Montague. From ancient times, the two families have held grudges against each other. As the book states. “Two households, alike in dignity...from ancient grudge break to new mutiny. Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean (1.Prologue.1-4).” The grudge between the two families has led to fighting and even death.

The main feature of all drama is conflict and Shakespeare uses oppositions in literary devices to create it. Romeo and Juliet starts off with the feuding families fighting, already setting the mood and creating a separation, forcing us as the reader to pick a side. Through the play, puns and other literary devices are used to establish oppositions between love and hate to create conflict and tension.

Most people know Shakespeare for his famous play, Romeo and Juliet in which is a tragic story about two decedents from ongoing feuding noble families.
