They don't belong no place.’ ” In the novel “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck is about two men in the 1930’s looking for a job to fulfill their dream which is to get ranch of their own. A major theme the author tries to tell in the novel is that hope is precious because it helps people keep pushing forward in life, no matter how hard life gets. Steinbeck uses foreshadowing to show hope in many parts of the novel. Foreshadowing is used throughout the novel to show how Hope can get people close to what they want. One example of this is in the beginning, the ranch George and Lennie wanted was only a dream but when George and Lennie kept pushing
Foreshadowing is used throughout the novel to show how most characters had a dream of their own but it didn’t end up in the right direction. One example of this is when Lennie wanted to tend the rabbits since that was really his dream once they worked and got all them acres. One quote from the book that proves this is “ He shook her then, and he was angry with her. “ Don’t you go yelling’,” he said, and he shook her; and her body flopped like a fish. And then she was still, for Lennie had broken her neck.” ( Steinbeck,pg.91) This quote from the text shows the theme by using foreshadowing because since it was Curley’s wife, Curley himself would want to kill him. He would get fired which would make it harder for him to
Any good detective looks for clues or hints to solve a case. As readers, we act like detectives to put clues together and find out what really happened. Foreshadowing is similar to this because it gives us clues to see what will occur in a future event. In Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck uses foreshadowing very often to tell us what could possibly happen. In this book, two men dream to have their own piece of land together, but they can’t buy it because they don't have enough money. The two men set out find a job for money but along the way, many obstacles are thrown at them, and some of them they ca
Aspirations of success often drive individuals toward success. However if one only focuses on their dreams and not on working to achieve their goals, they will not be successful. Charles Dickens and John Steinbeck in their respective novels Great Expectations and Of Mice and Men, use their main characters failures in manifesting their aspirations to warn about the dangers of aspiring about the future and not focusing on success in the present.
In Of Mice and Men, the hopes and dreams of the men on the ranch are a continuous focus and theme throughout the novel. John Steinbeck portrays the effects that dreams, or lack of them, have on the lives of the characters and the outcome of the novel. Steinbeck uses the concept of dreams at once to show hope and aspiration, as they invoke companionship with united determination for a better future, and to illustrate the difficulties of survival, with unrealised dreams illuminating the dark despair of society at that time.
“There is no way to be completely happy without being oblivious to the world around you” (Maredith Close). Everybody is oblivious, sometimes on purpose, sometimes not, though it tends to be beneficial. As said by Maredith Close, true happiness can not be achieved without oblivion, but in extreme cases, too much happiness for someone can cause less for someone else. Being oblivious can cause calm thoughts, but when conceived in extreme, can cause confusion and lack of comprehension, perhaps leading to irrational actions.
An example of foreshadowing is in the beginning of the story where Whitney is talking to Rainsford on the boat. Whitney stated that the Island was called “Ship-Trap” Island foreshadowing that you’d get stranded and stuck on the island. The effect gave us as readers an idea of what the story had in store for us further in the story. It wasn’t the most subtle, but it was just enough to hint the reader.
Steinbeck uses foreshadowing because it gives clues about what is going to happen later in the story. In the story George and Lennie have a dream to buy a ranch and have rabbits and make money out of their farm. By the end of the story their dream was not archived. In the book "Of Mice and Men," Steinbeck gives clues about foreshadowing to the reader. In the events of the death of Curley's wife, the death of Lennie, and loss of the dream.
Foreshadowing is used throughout the novel Of Mice and Men to predict how and what happens to Lennie at the end of the novel. The first piece of foreshadowing that happens in the novel is when George tells Lennie to comeback to where they camped out, in the beginning the book, if Lennie gets into any trouble. This is the place where George kills Lennie because he killed Curley's wife. The next piece of foreshadowing used in this novel is when when George is talking to Slim about what happened in Weed and about Lennie. George tells Slim how when the girl in the dress started yelling at Lennie he got scared, this shows up when Curley's wife yells at Lennie about messing up her hair, he holds on to her hair and then kills her.

The War on Optimism If you look through the news, you will find a plethora of despondent-sounding articles telling of mass shootings, acquitted offenders, and ongoings of current wars.
