Sometimes in life people go through experiences that change them. This is seen in the book The Cay by Theodore Taylor which is about a young boy named Philip. Philip is living on an oil rich island with his mom and dad during WWII. Since oil is so essential to the war, German submarines surround the island to try to stop any further oil shipments. Philip's mom sees this danger and decides to take Philip and try to escape. They try to sneak away on a ship carrying oil. The Germans see the ship and blow it up with a torpedo. Philip gets knocked out and wakes up on a raft with a man named Timothy. They both get cast away on an island and together have to survive.
