How Failure Is Failure

Everybody makes mistakes. Failure can be a motivation, for it drives you to have a bigger passion for your desired goal. Success and failure have a relationship in which you can learn from your mistakes but later succeed.

When I look at the word failure I didn’t see success. But that slowly changed as I read the book What the Best College Students Do by Ken Bain Chapter four. Bain, for me and I’m sure many other, have changed our view point on failure being a bad thing. He instead expressed failure as an “opportunity to learn something.” (121) As infants we grow and develop, we learn to walk by falling down a couple hundred times, and we learn to speak by babbling. By trying to walk, and trying to talk, we may fail at first. As an infant, you cannot give up when you are face to face with failure. You must get up and try again to learn. In the book, What the Best College Students Do by Ken Bain he uses people’s experiences and research to explain why failure is an opportunity to learn something new, rather than seeing failure as something bad. He asserts “people who become highly creative and productive learn to acknowledge failures, even to embrace them, and to explore and learn from them.” (100) Failure is important. If we did not get up and try again as infants, we would not be where we are today.

Failure is something that all people encounter in their lives. In some situations failure can break a person or make a person, meaning a person can fail at something and just simply give up. Others will fail and that failure can give them the inspiration to try harder to one day achieve their goal. I'm the type of person to fail and work harder until I am content. As my championship baseball coach would say "What’s our motto? Never give up!"

I’ve learned that failure is a common part of life, but how you perceive failure is what matters the most. There are a lot of uncontrollable variables that can dictate a situation. However, the one aspect we are able to control is our state of mind and it is imperative to have a positive mental attitude. As described by Shawn Achor, in Before Happiness, if you allow a pessimistic mind set to control your outlook on a situation. Then, one will only focus on all the aspects of the failure instead of looking on how to improve the situation. Perfectly stated by Winston S. Churchill “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; and optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.”

In most people's minds, the notion of failure is never a pleasant thought. However, think again, for certain benefits reside within the crushing blow of defeat. If one experiences failure and finds a way to get back up, they will emerge stronger than before.

Failure is the next step in succeeding. Failure is both a critical thinking tool, as well as a growth mindset strategies used to undertake failing as a learning utensil. A group who cannot accept their own failures does not want to improve in anyway are fixed. Making mistakes and accepting failing is tough to manage, but by normalizing mistakes and failures your on track to developing a growth mindset.

Failure is something that we cannot go through life without experiencing. The best thing about failure is that failure can be used as a great learning experience to improve upon things in our lives and career. Using failure as a learning tool is dependent upon the person and how they view it as well as how they use it. In a moments notice, Walt’s character had gone from his mind to Iwwerks hand and straight into the hearts of his viewers. Charles Mintz quickly took control of all of the accounts that Winkler was handling, which meant Oswald too. The people loved Oswald and they wanted more and so did Disney. As he went to the producing studios he was caught completely off guard, due to the fact that the producing company and Mintz owned all the rights to Oswald and many of the animators working under him were contracted to them as well. If he didn’t do what they asked, then he would loose his achievement. In the end, he did not do what the company wanted.

Failure often times leads a person to feel helpless, disappointed and depressed. However,one should not allow this to set them back in trying to achieve the ultimate aim one has set out to do. As my first semester of college is coming to an end, I would like to reflect on my experience here within the Honors 120 and 121 class on Failure and the Question Wheel. I chose this class on failure because I have always held myself to such high standards that I hoped to be able to find a way to accept failure in some instances. Within our first week in class, we made claims about failure. My favorite claim was that every failure is in some way a success. Although this claim was not very debatable and incredibly generic, I was able to really let my mind explore what it was trying to say. Throughout the semester I experienced failure after failure, but that allowed me to see that success can still be achieved within failures.
