How Has Technology Changed In The 1980s

Everyone has always wondered if people were ever watching them. Our technology today is capable to eavesdrop in on anyone’s conversations even if their phones are turned off. In the novel, “1984”, the party INGSOC uses telescreens to watch over the people and always know what they are up to. This denies the people’s rights and privileges to go about their business as they please. The technology we have today is almost exact to what big brother uses in George Orwell’s novel by taking over the public and private parts of our lives.

The 1980’s is one of the most interesting decades that was experienced in the United States. Dealing with the stock market, the coming up of new inventions, all the way to the types of music people listened to. During the 1980s, the only thing that made Americans be “Americans” was because of the things they were provided with. Many Americans had fun throughout the 1980s with materialistic, glamorous, and technological life styles; therefore there were different economical problems that Americans faced.

During the decades prior to the eighties the two most important issues the U.S. was facing were the war in Vietnam and civil rights. This era changed the way the public was able view the events, there was television and photography which allowed the world to see for the first time what war was about and journalism was not always unbiased. This era was an era of advancement, where many protested the war, there were the civil rights movement activists striving to gain equality for all regardless of color, sex, age, or race.

The President of the United States during the 1980s was Ronald Reagan. The liberals were known as “Reagan Democrats”. The most significant event that happened under President Reagan was the Berlin wall being torn down. The wall being torn down was significant because of the end of communism. Personal computers are now a very common item in many households. More than one million personal computers had been sold and by in the mid 1980s, it had risen to 30 million. Personal computers have been a big help in today’s society, and it also helps me with my homework, research papers, essays, and much more. The 80 's was an eye opener to a lot of new things, new music, new styles, new points of view on life and new technology. Music was a big hit for the 80 's and so was the technology. During the 80’s, three presidents served in office. Jimmy Carter’s last year was 1981. After him was a very popular president, Ronald Reagan, who was in office for two terms. Once Reagan’s administration was finished, George H. W. Bush was the next president. A popular war occurred during the 80’s, the Cold War. During the battle between the Soviet Union and United Nations, a barrier was created on the border between West and East Germany, known as the Berlin Wall. This wall was a huge disaster which was finally torn down thanks to a famous speech made by Ronald Reagan. The “Tear Down This Wall” speech was aimed towards Gorbachev, who was the last dictator of the Soviet Union. Eventually, the Berlin Wall was torn down and families were reunited.

In the novel, George Orwell describes the atmosphere of London, England using 3rd person limited. One of the ways he vividly describes the atmosphere of the current time is through the use of technology. The government managed to manipulate London’s population through technologies such as, telescreens, cameras, microphones, and the “thought police”. When writing the book, George Orwell’s perspective on technology was way beyond his decade.
