My journey through this semester was very knowledgeable and interesting experience. From learning about musical techniques and applying it to my songwriting process, it helped me become a better songwriter. Throughout this reflection, I want to discuss the things I learned throughout the semester and why it helped my as a songwriter.
Before taking this course, I used to just sing my songs, but never used to write them down. Throughout, the course I learned that it’s important to work on your songs even if it’s working on part of it. Taking time to improve you songs is already a step forward. Starting from lesson two, I learned the importance of having a strong premise. I found this very useful because then you have an idea of what your song is going to be about. You start thinking of emotion and storyline you want to write in the lyrics. For example, if you premise is about heartbreak, then the lyrics will be about a relationship, with maybe a sad piano accompaniment. Another interesting thing I learned about lesson two was the articles we read about techniques for finding ways to be inspired when writing a song. The article that was very useful was Finding Inspiration. From this article, a technique that I found useful was to write music about yourself or experiences. I found this to be a common thing for songwriters, according to the book we read In their Own Words, which was very interesting to read, I found that most of the famous songwriters, for example Dolly
A semester has passed since I started college and my journey of becoming a better writer. It has been a very important semester for my future college career, and I would not be here without the things I have accomplished. The composition program has really helped me to prepare for what college writing is all about. Now standing here and looking back I could not imagine how it would be without that class. I believe my English, and my writing is better than it has ever been, and all thanks to the composition program.
As the semester comes to a close, it is always interesting to look back and reflect on the events and opportunities my English class has given me throughout my first semester as a whole. At the beginning of this semester it was evident that I was feeling uncomfortable due to the adjustment that I was going through as a student moving to college. It was very difficult expressing myself through my writing since I was nervous about good impressions and my good grade. While this class was one of the most difficult courses that I have taken this far, it has become quite evident to me that I have grown a substantial amount as a writer and as a person; Especially, when it came to explaining my ideas, writing academic essays, and making arguments.

In Freshman Composition I learned what metacognition means, and how it applies to academic writing. Next I learned about textual evidence and backing up your opinions with research. *I expect this class to help develop my writing skills, as well as find my voice in writing, all together I expect this class to be challenging but rewarding. Therefore I have set a few goals for myself, my first goal is to step out of my comfort zone and research topics I have never heard of before. My second goal is to not second-guess myself on my writing topics and/or choices. Furthermore I expect great things to come from this
Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe
At the start of this course, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I had a goal for myself to improve and learn skills that would make writing less daunting for me. I have learned so many things about my writing that I didn’t think much about before. Another goal I had was to break the cookie-cutter mold that was set upon me throughout high school. During the process of revision, I discovered many things about myself as a writer and techniques that have been effective for me in the writing process.
This year I have learned a lot from College Writing, this class has taught me a lot about my own writing and what makes a good essay. I have learned a lot about myself as a writer and as a person throughout the course. In this reflection of the past semester I will be going through my past papers and talk about what I liked and how I could’ve made them better. I will also be going through the activities that have shaped my writing the most. Hopefully, I will be representing how I have grown as a writer throughout the year because of this class. Before taking this class I was already relatively confident in my writing abilities and was excited to take the class. Now that the course is completed I am even more confident in my writing because of all the new techniques and helpful tips I learned.

As the Fall 2017 term comes to end, I look back on what I have accomplished in this class. English 102 – Composition II was one of the most challenging and toughest class I have taken at UW-Stout, but feel as though it has helped me to improve my writing skills. Even before the semester started the feeling of anxiety had taken over, as writing has never been my strongest skill, but stayed positive and confident I would be successful. Much to my surprise, my instructor, Michael Critchfield quickly addressed that this class would not be easy and amazingly changed my views of writing throughout the entire semester.

This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the semester I would learn the most in. I learned the expectations for writing that I will have to live up to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college has still ?raised the bar? for me. Also, in high school, we would have weeks to pick a topic, create a thesis, outline the paper, write the paper, and then revise the paper. In college, the time restraints are not quite as lenient. During this semester, I have learned a great deal about my own writing, and writing in general. One of the main takeaways from this course for me was how to break down the intricate process of writing papers. In addition, I developed viable skills regarding going into more in-depth detail during each step of the writing process. I enjoyed having the freedom to write about a topic that I was able to choose. This allowed me to research and write about something that actually interested me immensely. Having to work with one topic for the entire semester taught me how to find reliable resources and how to pick out the essential research from each article.
I had gone to a Panic! At The Disco concert to see how Brendon Urie (the singer and songwriter) performed and look closely into the lyrics. I noticed that he had an amazing stage presence while singing, which made the audience go wild (including myself). I won’t be performing the song live (I believe), however I need to make sure there is enough ‘pizazz’ and ‘oomph’ in the music to possibly make my classmates bob their heads along with my song instead of making it super boring as if a robot were singing it. I also tried to really hard to listen to the lyrics and the patterns, and there was one thought that really stuck with me that would help with the process of writing my song, repetition. Truthfully, I’m scared of it. Not in a weird way, just in a songwriting way. When writing lyrics and melodies, one has to have just the right amount of repetition and just the right amount of newness and variation. If you have too much repetition, then the song can come out sounding annoying and redundant. If you have too much variety (which is my problem), then it is just too much jumble and there’s not one part of the song that really sticks out to the listener, there is only a blob of a song (again, this is only my opinion, however I do believe it has some truth to
As the year draws to a close, I reflect on what I have accomplished in my first semester of college. Not only have I grown as a writer but also as a person. This year was full of changes but I am glad that I remained steadfast in my beliefs and skills. While I learned things about myself in this course I also gained important writing and research skills.
