We the People The mere definition of the word “democracy” derives from the universal knowledge that democracy is lead by the people and for the people. The phrase, “the people” refers to the common man, which in America is any man born on American soil. Though, this was not exactly the case in the Age of Jackson. Andrew Jackson, one of the presidents of the United States, claimed that he was pro-democratic and that he was for the people, but was he really? The Age of Jackson was not an age of democracy because of how Andrew Jackson controlled the Indians, the way he went about voting laws, and how he was viewed as a “king”.

Jackson was anti-democratic because of the way he convinced people of things and toyed with their minds, convincing them that they had a say in their government with their rights on voting, when really, they didn’t. Document #2 shows a map of voting qualifications, and the states in which people were allowed to vote along with what they needed to qualify for the voting process. Jackson claimed that all men had a right to vote, when actually, the only people allowed to vote were white, American men who owned land. This was anti-democratic because democracy allows anyone of any gender or race to vote, and Jackson only allowed one kind of person voting rights. As well as being sly and conniving over the voting rights, he also used favoritism with the people he chose for office. Once again, Jackson told his followers that everyone had an equal chance at being elected for office, when in reality, Jackson chose mainly the people who were his most loyal followers. This was anti-democratic because Jackson was once again making decisions like a dictator, only following his own desires on how the country should have
