Literary devices have been fundamental tools used in order to determine the themes behind literary works. In Ray Bradbury’s A Sound of Thunder, a male individual named Eckels excitedly chooses to go on an adventure in a time machine to ancient times to hunt a Tyrannosaurus Rex with a Safari group. Throughout Eckel’s journey, the theme of “actions have consequences on the future” is illuminated through the author’s characterization of Eckels and symbolism of the dinosaur.
Throughout the story, the author initially characterizes Eckels as confident and misunderstanding of the effect of his actions on the future. After being informed that he will be commanded to hunt down a colossal Tyrannosaurus and about the significant rules of hunting, Eckels strongly states: “Trying to scare me...So they’re dead, so what...Where’s our Tyrannosaurus?” (2-5). Eckels is evidently very confident that he will easily succeed and survive his mission to kill the monster dinosaur. Furthermore, he

He rather desires to face the challenge of killing the dinosaur, regardless of what is in his way. As the story progresses and conflict arises, Eckel’s character changes: “I’m innocent. I’ve done nothing...No, it can’t be. Not a little thing thing like that. No!...Killing one butterfly couldn’t be that important! Could it?...Can’t we start over?” (10-11). After the Safari group blames the dinosaur attack on Eckel’s behavior, Eckels feels initially innocent of his actions. However, his feelings of belittlement and fearfulness of the capability of the effect of his actions on the future have now become an integral part of his behavior. He has indeed gained some insight into the significant effect of his actions. He hopes that he can amend his mistake. Based on all of this, it can be concluded that the author’s characterization of Eckels successfully embodies the theme of “actions have consequences on the
When you think of dinosaurs do you think about your own impending doom? Would you expect a poem about how society will fall apart? This poem may have pessimistic descriptions of the world, but it delivers a powerful message. Poet, Charles Bukowski, uses several literary devices in his poem, “Dinosauria, We”, to describe the end of the human race caused by the current living conditions that we are born into without a choice. It is inevitable that we will go extinct just as the dinosaurs before us, however the sun will go on and with it a new chapter. He uses the literary devices of anaphora, extended metaphor, and epistrophe to make his poem reverberate in the reader's mind. Bukowski’s use of poetic devices communicates the theme that we are born into this world without a choice, a world of corruption and destruction that will
A man gets hunted by another man on the deserted Ship-Trap Island in the middle of the Caribbean. Rainsford, the protagonist in “The Most Dangerous Game”, a short story written by Richard Connell, gets hunted by General Zaroff. Rainsford abounds with fear, making him crazy. General Zaroff’s arrogance causes him to feel that he possesses the right to hunt the people he captures. His arrogance causes him to commit gruesome things; in this case, murder. Prior to becoming another man’s prey, Rainsford feels that animals have no feelings, but he sympathizes for animals being hunted after he himself becomes prey. His feelings and opinions transform after this experience. “The Most Dangerous Game” consists of three central themes: fear makes an individual crazy, arrogance causes hurtful actions, and some experiences have the potential to alter an individual’s opinion.
Eckels is an insecure person. At the beginning of the story, Eckels is excited to hunt a dinosaur. He wants to hunt a dinosaur so he will be known as a great hunter.
Now it is clearly visible that both men are very different but they still both ended up making the same mistakes to lead to a bigger event now we can see how they are different. Both hunters were very dedicated to hunting that was their life passion, they had both been on very many hunting trips throughout their life. But they both got bored with hunting small game they both wanted to hunt bigger, better, more dangerous game they both lived for the thrill. For example, in the text, General Zaroff said,”Hunting tigers ceased to interest me some years ago. I exhausted their possibilities, you see. No thrill left in tigers, no real danger. I live for danger, Mr. Rainsford.” (Connell 62) He also said in the story that, “Hunting was beginning to bore me!” (Connell 63). Eckels also wanted to hunt bigger, better, more dangerous game for example in the text, “ The Tyrant Lizard, the most incredible monster in history. Sign this release.
The following assignment was completed based off of the short story A Sound of Thunder by Ray Bradbury.
In Richard Connell’s short story “The Most Dangerous Game” depicts how civilized human beings will change to an uncivilized person if their life becomes endanger. Sanger Rainsford a famous big-game hunter is lost on an island, the island he is lost on happens to have another big-game hunter named General Zaroff. Although General Zaroff and Rainsford’s definition of big-game is completely different. Rainsford like most hunter’s hunts animals, as for Zaroff he hunts humans. Rainsford in the beginning of the story is a civilized person, but becomes uncivilized when he finds his life is at risk.
First off, the most blatant one is that Zaroff kills humans, while, as far as we know, Eckles does not. Also, the damage that Eckles causes in the story is rooted in an accident. All of Zaroff's ‘accidents’ were intentional, like the shipwrecks on his island. At the same time though, Eckles actions affect the entire world, shown in the quote “there was a thing to the air, a chemical taint”(Bradbury 45), which shows the subtle differences in the world, while Zaroff’s effect is more to a few individuals themselves and possibly their
Thomas C. Foster quotes in his book, “They don’t know enough about the only subject that really matters: themselves. The real reason for a quest is always self-knowledge” (31). The two characters’ quests help the characters learn the true meaning of their quest and how it relates to their lives. Their quests give them a new meaning in their lives and help strengthen their individual growth. At the beginning of Rainsford's quest, he tells his friend, Whitney, "Be a realist. The world is made up of two classes-the hunters and the hunted. Luckily, you and I are hunters" (Connell 145). Rainsford is arrogant and conceited and believes he is the top notch hunter. Only when he switches and plays the part of the hunted, does he humble himself and realize the pain the hunted go through. The other character, Eckels, when specifically told not to walk off the path, "Eckels, not looking back, walked blindly to the edge of the Path, his gun limp in his arms, stepped off the Path, and walked, not knowing it, in the jungle", endangering the hunters lives as well as his own life (Bradbury 127). He realizes the consequences of not following directions, and learns that following directions is very important to his safety and the safety of others. The two characters’ quests contribute to the development of their
both of these stories had technology that changed the people in nethergrave and in sound of thunder . In “A Sound of Thunder,” had a time machine that took them back in time where dinosaurs lived. The time machine took them to a jungle sixty million years in the past. In “Nethergrave,” the main character gets stuck in a virtual world instead of the real world. Jeremy chooses this after he had a bad day when scoring a goal for the enemy team in a soccer game. “Nethergrave” climax was when Jeremy’s online friends left him and then he got a message from someone telling him to turn on his mic. He made the decision to leave the real world to go somewhere he was promised never to be abandoned.
In the short story “A Sound of Thunder,” Ray Bradbury utilizes imagery to paint a picture in the reader's head of the setting and how the characters conquer problems along the way, and furthermore uses this literary device to provide the theme of the story; little things can make a big difference, and pay attention to detail. This happens when Travis, the tour guide of the prehistoric hunt, and Eckels, the customer, are hunting dinosaurs together and first catch sight of the T-Rex. The men are astonished at what they see, “It came on great oiled, resilient, striding legs. It towered thirty feet above half of the trees, a great evil god, folding its delicate watchmaker’s claws close to its oily reptilian chest. And from the great breathing cage of the upper body those two delicate arms dangled out front, arms with hands which might pick
