When a science fiction writer creates an imaginary society, it can be used to explore issues in our current society that could affect the way we evolve in the future. In the novel Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury created a society that was seemingly unrealistic. This society has different ideals from ours, such as what is considered anti-social or what people should be enjoying in their free time. However, there are other aspects of Bradbury’s imaginary society that are becoming reality in 21st century Canada. Bradbury predicted a society that would be television obsessed. He predicted a society that would be so consumed by their technology that they would choose it over books or even socialization with their own family. While it has not come to that extent in our society just yet, at this rate Bradbury’s vision of the future is slowly coming true.
Social media can easily change the way one thinks about him or herself. If the mass media says it is not okay to do something, the rest of society will conform to that idea. If all the famous actors start wearing a certain style of clothing, many of the young girls will take up the same look. In Fahrenheit 451, the same rules apply to society. Books are illegal and anyone found with a book on his property would be not only jailed, but his house would be sent up in flames. Guy Montag is a firefighter in this futuristic society. His job is to burn the houses of people who were found with books. Montag sees what is happening in society; the citizens have conformed to be what the government deems the safest. Ray Bradbury in his book Fahrenheit 451 shows how conforming to society is not always the correct thing.
Ray Bradbury is a great foreshadower. His work is generally fantasy and horror and he it is exquisite. Bradbury wrote Fahrenheit 451 back in 1953 and it still connects with the conflicts of today. The way society was in Fahrenheit 451 is similar to how it is today. The society is arrogant and selfish. No one cares about anyone or anything besides the TVs and technology. In Fahrenheit 451, the lack of physical communication and relationships between people due to the development of technology sabotages society before they know it.
Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 is a science fiction novel about a futuristic community that has lost the ability to socially interact with one another. Guy Montag is the average citizen. His profession is a fireman, except in this society firemen don’t prevent fires, they start them. His job, like many other firemen, is to illuminate books by burning them because books are illegal. Over the course of Fahrenheit 451, Montag realizes society and its faults. Bradbury uses Montag to depict technology and censorship as examples of warning signs, and how that society could one day become ours.
technology. Six decades later, this prediction is coming true. The similarities are uncanny. In Fahrenheit 451, society is chock-full of civilians who are ignorant of political affairs and elect officials based on their looks. Likewise, many people today in America don't vote, and many learn bad habits from television. Bradbury's perception of the culture in Fahrenheit 451 can be compared to modern society because people watch too much television, people don't always benefit from technology, and people don't value education anymore.
