Ariana Frankiz English 4 Period 5 28 February 2024 Working title In the book 1984 by George Orwell, the control tactics used are the ones that’s still being used in today’s society. Like controlling how citizens should view the media, controlling the use of propaganda, only telling citizens what they want and not the whole truth. Control tactics in 1984 include monitoring citizens through surveillance, like the telescreens in people’s homes. An example is similar to China monitoring its citizens through social media. These tactics are mostly used to track down terrorists or drug lords. “Once combined and fully operational, the tools can help police grab the identities of people as they walk down the street, find out who they are meeting with …show more content…
They’ll sort of threaten their citizens and exaggerate the consequences if they do certain things. “The North Korean government has tight control over the lives of every citizen living within the borders by using fear to control their movements, actions, and beliefs. The government implements fear into the lives of its citizens by implementing public displays of power to show the nation’s strength to its citizens, use of secret police to spy on its citizens, displays of violence and executions by the military or law enforcement” (arcadia.edu). Propaganda, the government is constantly using that to control its citizens, like I mentioned before, the government only tells its citizens things they want them to know. They will keep the whole truth from them. The news is full of lies, and biased opinions. “This is a government that lies, cheats, steals, spies, kills, maims, enslaves, breaks the laws, overreaches its authority, and abuses its power at almost every turn; treats its citizens like faceless statistics and economic units to be bought, sold, bartered, traded, and tracked; and wages wars for profit, jails its own people for profit, and has no qualms about spreading …show more content…
This is something that isn’t ever going to stop. “For years now, the powers-that-be—those politicians and bureaucrats who think like tyrants and act like petty dictators regardless of what party they belong to—have attempted to brainwash us into believing that we have no rights: to think for ourselves, make decisions about our health, protect our homes and families and businesses, act in our best interests, demand accountability and transparency from government, or generally operate as if we are in control of our own lives” (Whitehead). When we are consumed by fear, we stop thinking. There is no privacy in China. Whatever they’re doing, they’re being watched through their devices, whatever website they open, they’re being spied on through it. “The Chinese government operates the world’s most intrusive mass surveillance system, yet consistently denies the international community meaningful access to it. China views the Internet through the lens of national security and sovereignty, differing significantly from the Western model that envisions citizens’ privacy rights in opposition to, rather than derived from, government authority” (56).

Aphorisms and Propaganda The use of propaganda dates back into the 1600s, originally used by the Catholic Church as a way of cultivating the Catholic religion in foreign countries. Control Propaganda is something that can take control of one, brainwash someone’s mind, and make a person think otherwise to their own beliefs. You see the use of propaganda in a lot of places, although it was primarily used in the past. For example during WWII, but you also see it today, and also in the books we read and the T.V. we watch.
