Foreshadowing in a story is very hard to include without making the next event too obvious. In the story “Lamb to the Slaughter” Roald Dahl uses elements of suspense to engage the readers to keep reading to see what happens next( THESIS). The author frequently uses dramatic irony, plot twist and foreshadowing to create a story that is both creepy and mysterious.
Throughout the first four paragraphs of Dahl’s short story, “Lamb to the Slaughter,” the literary elements of visual imagery and repetition create a setting that is almost “too perfect,” which skews Mary Maloney’s awareness of the world, foreshadowing major problems later in the story. Dahl initiates his story by introducing a perfect example of what society was in the postwar era of America in the 50s. Through the utilization of visual imagery, Dahl describes the livingroom of protagonist Mary Maloney as being, “...warm and clean...” (Dahl line 1), which is also prepared for the return of her husband, Patrick Maloney, such that, “...two tall glasses, soda water, whiskey...” (Dahl lines 2-3) are fixed in the living room. Through visual imagery,
In this short story, Anders is the main character and the only one who is controlling the story. His death is not only caused by the other people’s choices, but also his own choices. From the beginning, Anders’ personality is described and is seen as detestable by the reader. He “was never in the best of tempers anyway, Anders book critic known for the weary, elegant savagery with which he dispatched almost everything he reviewed”. Throughout the story, Anders has a apathetic attitude towards the bank robbery, which make the reader have a rough time caring about him. He says things such as “Damned unfair…Tragic, really. If they’re not chopping off the wrong leg, or think it’s a pretty lousy way to treat your customers”, “Oh bravo…Dead meat…Great script, eh? The stern, brass-knuckled poetry of the dangerous classes.” By these lines, the author proves Anders’ sarcastic, rude, impatient and unsympathetic personality. Thus, the reader detects the character’s uniqueness and wonders if he cares about his own life or if he knows the impact of his disrespectful answers on the bank robbers. In parallel, Anders is continuously criticizing everything like if it was one of the books he reads.

Mrs. Maloney giggled gleefully and nervously laughed. Afterwards, she walked normally as a normal wife of Patrick. Mrs. Maloney felt so wicked, and incorrigible, all because of her cunning husband. Overall, she and the men know Patrick for sweet sorrow. Mrs. Maloney ushered the men out, sentimental and rampage thoughts ran through her veins.
Now to bring a lamb to slaughter means to kill it. The irony of the title is that it's the husband, the unsuspecting, trusting character he is, being brought the slaughter and the lamb is the weapon in the whole affair. The dramatic irony "probably right under our very noses" is ironic because the murder weapon is actually right under their noses, and their also eating it.
The exposition was that Mary Maloney was always home by herself all day. She used to wait from the minute her husband left the house until the time when he arrived home to see him again. Mary’s spouse was named Patrick Maloney and was a policeman. He was a serious, ignorant man. One evening, he arrived home, but he was acting strange. The conflict was that Patrick
In the short story Lamb to the Slaughter written by Roald Dahl the author shows us a different perspective to violence that is very rarely used. The protagonist of the story is not necessarily a hero. The author wants us to understand that just because someone is the protagonist doesn’t mean they can’t be violent. They don’t need any hard-core training or even a real weapon! Anyone and everyone has the capability of being violent.
Patrick tries to brace himself for the proper words to let his wife down gently. He wanted a divorce. He turns and looks at this wife while taking a long sip of his drink. “No need to prepare dinner for me tonight because I am still going out.”(319) He took a deep sigh while staring at his wife face, her eyes telling him that she is confused but waiting anxiously for what he has to say. “I don’t know how to say this so I’m just going to come out and say it.”(319) He took another deep sigh and another swig of his drink. “I’ve been having an affair with a co-worker for three years and now she is expecting. We have not been happy with each other for years so I think the best thing for the both of us would be to go our separate ways. Mary, I want a divorce.” While he’s standing there waiting for her to take in the words and see how she is going to react. He just stares at him with no expression on the face. Nothing. Patrick doesn’t know what to think, let alone do. So he then decides to exit the room but I guess he making the first move caused Mary to come out of her shock state. “Darling, I’m going into the kitchen to fix us a nice dinner and then we can sit down and talk this
In May, 2005, Marcus travelled to Africa for a holiday for three weeks. He went with his wife Renee and they went with another couple of friends named Andrew and Meredith. Marcus and the others went on South African airlines and the travel agent was his wife Renee. They chose to holiday in Africa because they wanted to purely see the wild animals of Africa that people always talk about and the animals you see on documentaries. Marcus wanted to see the animals up close in person rather than seeing them in zoos where they are kept in limited spaces. He wanted to interact with the animals and feed them without having the worry of them hurting him. They chose to attend Africa in the summer time as it was warm and a lot of the animals were not hibernating
