Soul Surfer by Bethany Hamilton is a heart-warming biography that should definitely be saved. Soul Surfer should be preserved because it teaches you to be grateful, to never give up, and to know that anything can happen to you. One reason why Soul Surfer should be preserved is because it teaches you to be grateful. Bethany has previously said, “No matter how good or bad you think life is, wake up each day and be thankful for life. Someone somewhere else is fighting to survive.” Once Bethany got bit by a shark she was very grateful she didn’t die. So she wants others to realize that they need to be grateful for what they have and not take it for granted. In Fahrenheit 451 Montag realized, “And the house all burnt. And my job gone and myself on the run, and I planted a book in a fireman's house on the way. Good Christ, the things I’ve done in a single week.” (Bradbury 125) Montag took too many things for granted and when he realized they were gone, it was too late. He always was the nice guy and followed the rules but everyone took that for granted and then everything …show more content…
Bethany expressed, “When you fall in the impact zone, get up, because you never know what’s over the next wave.” If Bethany would have stopped trying to surf after her arm got bit off she wouldn’t have realized that she can do as many things with one arm as she could with two even though it would be a tough battle. In Fahrenheit 451 Faber said, “I suppose I’ll have to do even more violent things, exposing myself so I won’t fall down on the job and turn scared again What are your plans?” Montag replies to Faber, “To keep running.” (Bradbury 125) If Montag would have just stopped there and gave up he wouldn’t have ever found the men who wrote/read books by the river. He also could have died by getting bombed in the city. Both Soul Surfer and Fahrenheit 451 teaches you to never give up and chase your

In the past there are many struggles you need to overcome. Depression in a poor family, violence in a city and also no education. That relates to Guy Montag in the novel. He was in a city with no books to read and educate himself with and he was in a city where people would drive cars as fast as they can to treat themselves when sad. He made sure that he got the happiness he wanted and the life he wanted which would also show the theme happiness depends on ourselves. In Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury a man named Guy Montag goes through struggles in a society where they burn books. He was not happy by this as he killed his captain and ran away from his unhappy depressed life to a happy life where he can read books peacefully and gain more knowledge. This
Despite all this, Montag strays away from everyone. In Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, Guy Montag understands that justice is to think freely; his search for justice is successful and is significant because it shows that one should challenge ideas rather than accept it blindly. Guy Montag understands that justice is to think freely.
3. I did enjoy the book Soul Surfer. It was a very inspirational, touching story. I was inspired greatly by Bethany Hamilton’s courage and will to accomplish her dreams, despite the challenge. I was touched by her story, and how she overcame her obstacles with the help of God. The book was told from a first person point of view. I liked this a lot, because it allowed the reader to fully understand Bethany’s emotions towards what was happening. From another person’s point of view, Bethany seemed like she was feeling fine, and recovering well, but on the inside she really wasn’t. This was the right point of view to tell such a story that involved so many hidden emotions.
At quick glance of Fahrenheit 451, the first thing that is seen is a deep meaning. If society was in need, would you be like Montag and try to help save mankind? In Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, mindless television is shown in a way that Mildred is so consumed in the T.V. that she doesn’t pay attention to anyone else. Persuasive advertising is shown when Montag gets on the train and is surrounded by ads telling him to buy that product. The decline in a family unit is shown when Mrs. Phelps and Mrs. Bowles come over and talk about how having children is the worst thing that has ever happened to them. In order to scare us all into living a more purposeful life, Bradbury creates a society that is very similar to the one we live in today by highlighting
Our Life is a matter of choices. Live well and have faith and it will never go wrong. Our lives can be full of crazy ups and downs that shape our views on how life should be lived. With a similar ideology, author Flannery O’Connor’s depicts her own life struggles using different aspects and details throughout her novels and short stories. O’Connor lived by the basis that life must go on no matter the hardships. In her novels she represented various characters who made wrong choices and due to those choices suffered extreme negative consequences. Despite her struggles, O’Connor made the choice to continue on in her life yet many of her novels contradicted that same idea by having characters in her novels and short stories suffer consequences for making the wrong choices. Because the
Everybody has gone through something that has shaped changed them in a way that they could never go back to the person they were. In life, pain and suffering changes people and often causes one to restructure their life. As well, suffering can either define an individual or to allow for spiritual growth. This is especially true in Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, as even though both Mildred and Clarisse differ in their perceptions toward life and their effect on Montag, both must eventually suffer the reality of a society consumed by insensitivity to push along Montag’s journey. All in all, one will view that it was necessary for both Clarisse and Mildred to experience death to allow for Montag’s journey to come to full circle.
According to Marian Erickson, “Most of life is choices, and the rest is pure dumb luck.” Real people’s lives depend on this quote everyday, which leads to the outcome of each problem individuals face. In the passages, characterization of the main personas helps one understand the theme. Conflict and symbolism also help lead to the overall idea that life is not always guaranteed to be full of success. The book The Other Wes Moore, the poem “If,” and the informational text “The Art of Resilience” all share a common theme of how choices and luck contribute to the success of life.
In his book Bradbury penned “No, we’ll save what we can, we’ll do what there is left to do” after he described Montag consuming Captain Beatty with a flamethrower and realizing how he is willing to give his life for a cause in order to bring about improvement to the world. The previous quote directly related to the Korean War, which Bradbury intended in order to uncover the importance of a soldier's willingness to sacrifice everything they have for a cause they believe in. Montag was trying to protect those he loved, while still working for the cause he believed in. He was dedicated in bringing down the current society in his world no matter the consequence. This in turn related to the time period in which Bradbury’s penned his main points in his book. He scribed Fahrenheit 451 towards the beginning of the cold war and in the midst of the Korean War. He watched on as humanity started down the dehumanizing path it currently exists in. Bradbury realized the severe impact dehumanization had on the world and one of the plausible ways to rectifying the problem was by informing the public on the importance of standing up for a cause. Many of his readers did not necessarily agree with his viewpoints and considered them to be irrelevant in society. As time has worn on however, people have realized
“Life is a lot like surfing…When you get caught in the impact zone, you’ve got to just get back up. Because you never know what may be over the next wave” (“Soul Surfer”). Bethany Hamilton endured a very traumatic experience in her life, and this is why she is known as the “Soul Surfer.” The difficulties she faced and overcame were truly remarkable.
In the novel Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury explores the theme of risk through the allusion of Icarus. He does this by introducing the idea of taking chances to go beyond social norms, and achieving something above expectations and reveals this through Montag’s actions. The story of Icarus and his father teaches a valuable lesson of being cautious and the consequences of a risk, however Montag’s journey reveals the advantage of surpassing a limit and the fruit it can yield.
The last way Ray Bradbury proved in that it is better to know the truth about your life than live in ignorance in Fahrenheit 451 is how after Montag got a purpose in his live it opened his eyes to a different world and showed him his old life was a lie. He actually started to be happy opposed to just thinking he was happy while living in ignorance. The first time you realize that Montag started off living in ignorance is after he is asked if he is happy he laughs and says “Happy! Of all the nonsense, He stopped laughing. (10)” This quote shows that Montag had thought he was happy but actually shows that he was just happy in ignorance. After Montag learns the truth about his life it opens his eyes to a new world of literature. Montag’s lack of knowledge about books is demonstrated when he is talking to Faber on page 85 and says “Are things like that in books? But it came off the top of my mind.” This is significant because it shows that Montag is
To begin, rebelling against oppressive rule has allowed Montag to escape their rulers brainwashing and free their minds from the corruptive manipulation put in place by ruling powers. Author of Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury goes on to explain, “If you don’t want a man unhappy politically, don’t give him two sides to a question to worry him; give him one.
There are multiple similarities between Soul Surfer and How to Write a Memoir. In How to Write a Memoir Zinsser said that a memoir should have smaller or less-important details about your life, instead of the larger more action packed things. Zinsser states, “Many of the chapters in my book are
It made a lot of things harder for her, but that doesn’t mean she gave up. Surfing was a big part of her life, and giving that up wasn’t going to happen. It was a rough process, but Bethany eventually gave up her fears and got back on her board. Lifeguards and doctors say it was her determination and faith in God that got her back up. In January 2004, Bethany made her big return in surf competitions. Her first competition after getting back on her board, she placed 5th place. With no intention of stopping, Bethany continued to enter and excel in competition. As Bethany put it, “It was what God had taught me growing up that helped me overcome my fear and get back on the board. ‘Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go’ (Joshua
