I. Introduction
The body of this report is divided into two main sections. The first part addresses the main sports development in Singapore and the second assesses these developments and sheds light on problems encountered in the related developments.
II. Sports Development in Singapore
Much of Singapore’s economic success has been attributed to its status as a world-class commercial and trading centre. In the past century, the government has focused most of the nation’s policies to boost its economy and establish the country’s reputation in the global market. 2. The World Stage and Gaining International Recognition
The 21st century marked a great sporting decade for Singapore as the country gained many opportunities to showcase herself globally. The most evident milestone came when Singapore won the bid to host the 117th International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in 2005. The nation displayed its capability to organise international events with great efficiency and impressed the delegates from around the world. Thereafter, it was announced in 2008 that Singapore won the bid to host in the inaugural Youth Olympic Games.
In the years that followed, Singapore has attracted major sporting events such as the Formula One Grand Prix sole night race, the first Asian Youth Games and other World tournaments of various sports such as Badminton, Netball and Table Tennis are scheduled to be held later this year. Such international spotlight on the nation inspires and challenges the local athletes to put their best foot forward in pursuit of sports excellence.
2. Nurturing Athletes for Sports Excellence
The committee has initiated several programs to groom athletes in achieving sports excellence. These include the Foreign Sports Talent Scheme (FST) and the Sports Excellence Talent Elite Athlete Management (spexTEAM) program. The Australian Government will stand before the media and boast to the world that we are a highly successful sporting country. However, the athletes and their families endured hardship, with little financial Government support . Many athletes had to travel overseas to gain qualification and international experience at their own expense. It is also noted that different sports are valued at different rates. Sport is an ever growing aspect of our cultures, and as the access to different avenues of sport begin to present themselves we question the ability of sport organizations to expand globally. This review of literature will examine different avenues of sport and the research that has been done in regards to their effort to expand on a global scale.
Sport development is the promotion of sports activities for the community. Successful sports development depends largely on effective partnership and networking with a wide range of community groups, service providers, facility operators, National Governing bodies, local authorities and voluntary groups.Fundamentally sport development is about participation and promoting the opportunities and benefits of participation. Participation in sport and physical activity spans a wide range of contexts.Those engaging in sport development must be in the business of devising better and more effective ways of promoting interest and participation or performance in sport. Sport development is a questionable and challenged term, particularly as the accurate importance and utilization of 'sport improvement ' can 't be assumed, as various arrangement and expert settings have incrementally procured remarkable quality and implications that can 't be disregarded. Sports development services encourage and deliver an extensive range of high quality programmes and initatives designed to succeed in a long term and sustainable increase in sport and physical activity. This is achieved through using the local delivery system for sport and physical activity working with a network of strong and effective key partners at a national, regional and local level. The fifth trend is “Internationalisation of Australia sports”. Television and media broadcasting has allowed sports played throughout the world to be broadcasted instantly to Australia Television. Currently in South Korea the Pyeong Chang 2018 Olympic Winter Games are being held, this major event is broadcasted instantly to every television in the world. Now that the media can broadcast popular sports all around the world, this gives the media more profit as more people are tuning in to watch. This results in more exposure for the sponsors. This trend affects my participation in Ballroom Dance as this sport isn’t exposed as much as other sports like Touch Football. Touch Football had in 2015 – 2016 694,427 Participants, See appendix D.
Sport plays a huge role in today’s society. It contributes to one’s health and fitness, social interaction, social and motor skills, patriotism, fun and entertainment. It also stimulates the economy and tourism leading to interaction between different cultures, for example the Olympics, and sport role models. Sports clearly are an important part of cultures and societies around the world as such events as the Olympics
Sports have been around for centuries, dating back to 776 BC with the first Olympic Games. Ancient civilizations like the Egyptian, Greeks and Mayans all had a sport they enjoyed taking part in. They were created to bring people together and help them settle disputes or conflicts in an organized manner. Great leaders of the ancient world saw a fascination in sports and made it part of their reign to promote the human’s natural competitiveness. Since then, new sports have emerged and also new reasons for one to play. New sports evolve every day all over the world. Everywhere in social media and magazines you will find images of famous athletes and their achievements. Not much history has been left behind by these famous civilizations except for some cave paintings and stories passed down through generations. However, these sports have helped new ones all over the world flourish and the competitive aspect has been kept intact with some modifications to minimize some of its historical brutality.
It is also easy for many other companies to set up headquarter in Singapore as their starting point in Asia to make it possible to reach to its market point. In addition, Singapore is unique in different lifestyles and culture. It is also known for its capability of attracting sizable foreign investment, pro-business environment and entrepreneurs. Sports have always been one of the major factors of the society and economy. Back in Ancient Greece, the homeland of the Olympic games, the Greeks believed that a healthy body was very important and sports played an important part of the society. Nowadays, the sport industry has grown to a direct and indirect economic impact of the countries, with organizations and sport events that have fans and supporters from all over the planet that are willing to spend a great amount of money in order to show their support for their favorite team, player or club. That happens because sports entertain people by watching their favorite sport teams play in some of the sports mega-events.
Singapore has a highly developed market which has historically revolved around extensive exports trade, in other words an export driven economy hugely dependant on export of goods to other countries.
This system was created to minimize dropout and produce technical skill labour to reach it new economic goals. Singapore next economic phase needed more technical workers, foreign investor was looking for technological base such as computer parts, silicon, etc. the government heavily invested in ITE that was built to produce technical skill labour to meet the market demand.
Singapore is an island that lies just off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula between the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean. Its strategic location on major sea lanes has provided the country with an economic importance in Southeast Asia. Singapore is often considered as a base for global enterprises looking to expand into Asia and Asian enterprises looking for global connectivity. Located at the heart of Asia, Singapore is sitting at the centre of business opportunities. Having the four key attributes - Trust, Knowledge, Connected and Life, Singapore is being positioned as an ideal city to Work, Live and Play. Singapore was ranked first in Mercer’s Quality of Living Survey 2009.
