When Jennifer Wormser learned that I was interested in painting dollhouses, she offered to loan me her personal copy of The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton. The fictional tale tells the story of a young woman who receives a miniature Dutch cabinet house from her husband as a wedding present. The story is based on the actual 17th-century Doll’s House of Petronella Oortman (c.1686- c. 1710) on display in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, which I was fortunate to see in person during a visit to the Rijksmuseum a few years ago. It was a combination of seeing Petronella Oortman’s actual doll’s house displayed next to a painting that was made of the doll’s house by Jacob Appel in 1710, that inspired me to paint my first dollhouse interior, based on a childhood

The main characters of the play is Nora Helmer and her husband Torvald Helmer. Imagine what it would be like to live in a doll 's home? It 's a house in which you are controlled and have no energy to settle on any solid choice; It 's a house in which you are a play thing for another person 's amusement. This sounds a ton like an awful marriage, so it 's a house in which your husband holds the satchel strings, in a manner of speaking, and abandons you with no influence over your family 's accounts. In fact, your husband keeps you on a tightrope. Such is the perceived life of Nora Helmer.
In this selection of the book, Gitlin discusses a seventeenth-century Dutch painter by the name of Vermeer. Vermeer was known for being able to”fr[ee]ze instants, but instants that spoke of the relative constancy of the world in which his subjects lived” (Gitlin 558). People collected Vermeer’s paintings for display throughout their homes. Gitlin sees Vermeer as the seventeenth-century version of the media. In that time, the images painted were relative to the people’s era and private world. In today’s world Vermeer would be the equivalent to a celebrity photographer or movie director. If Vermeer, or any other artist of his time, were to see today’s households, they would find that the once private space inside the home is now much more dominated by images of the outside world than what would have been possible in the 1600’s.

The objects in the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts are an important historical collection, reflecting the development of a number of art forms in Western Europe. The department's holdings covered sculpture in many sizes, woodwork and furniture, ceramics and glass, jewelry, and tapestries. Nora Helmer, the protagonist of the story, represents the typical women in society during that era. The audience’s first impression of Nora is a money obsessed, childish, obedient house wife to her husband, Torvald Helmer. A woman’s role in the 1800’s was not all that different to the common household doll just mentioned; this and caring the chores and duties around the house. This was the stereotypical “woman” in this era. They were to be controlled and nothing else. Katherine Mansfield's "The Dolls House" seems to be a simple story about children receiving a own ideas and opinions. Even though everyone is entitled to their own opinion it is often bizarre to see how our opinions are based on those of others.
