When I was seven, I had to witness my older brother be kicked out of the house. This was such a traumatizing experience because my older brother was my role model. Additionally, as a young child, my little sister and I were frequently home alone due to my parents always working double shifts. Thus, once my brother left, I had to take on his responsibilities; consequently, I learned how to be a leader at a young age. This experience has allowed me to develop values such as excellence, leadership, truth and service that will contribute to the vision and legacy of Howard University.
Excellence is defined as being outstanding or exceptionally good. I exhibit this value in both of my academics and athletics. I have a 3.69 grade point average which makes me top 6% of my class. Moreover, I have received awards such as “Most Dedicated Player,” “Most Improved Player,” and “Hustle Award” throughout my high school career. These achievements have allowed me to be an example of excellence to my peers. Therefore, if I’m accepted into Howard University, I believe that I’ll be able to inspire students to work hard and achieve their goals.
I display leadership by being the president of the National English Honor

For instance, I have been an altar server at my local church, St. Mary of the Assumption Church, for five years. As an altar server, I assist the priest during mass every Sunday. Furthermore, I regularly do community service in my neighborhood. For example, I’ve renovated houses for the poor, cleaned storm drains, and encouraged recycling in attempts to serve my community. Ergo, through all of my hard labor, I’ve accumulated over 108 hours of community service. These hours of community service are a testament to the truth and service I give to my community. Once I am accepted into this institution, I will bring the same enthusiasm for truth and service to Howard
Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) has an established community living agreement, which directs all its members on how to carry themselves within the institution’s environment, as well as in the community. The institution’s mission is to offer higher education within a Christian community where character is modeled and transformed to express Christian faith. Students who join the institution are expected to maintain good conducts, which are guided by the Holy Spirit.
This life lesson has influenced me to become a member of various community projects and organizations; promoting change in my community. Service is a value very dear to me because I love to give back to the community and help people who are in need. Truth is the core value that defines the integrity of a person's character. Truth defines me simply because I believe honesty is the best policy. To be trustworthy is to be accountable and dependable. I would enhance the legacy of Howard University by bringing excellent leadership skills, team working skills, honesty, integrity, and excellence. I would bring new innovative ideas and perspectives to the university through my diverse approach on sensitive subject matter such as Racial Disparities in America to Gender Equality for Women. I also would bring my drive for community service to the many programs on the University's campus such as their Alternative Spring Break. The core values that the university holds dear are the same motives that push me to make a difference in the world. I live by these values daily which would prove me to be a great addition to Howard University’s
Education and learning has been something that has fascinated me from an early age. This fascination has encouraged me to strive for the best. Throughout high school, I have managed to maintain a 3.5 GPA while participating in extracurricular activities and organizations such as Lewisville High School’s JV Dance/Drill Team, Varsity Theatre, Speech/Debate, National Honor Society, and Student Council. Along with my school involvement I have been working part-time at Chick Fil A for two years.
I believe each and every student is capable of learning and achieving academic success, however some children require individualized support to ensure their success. A strength I posses that supports high academic expectations for all Houston ISD students is my ability to motivate and empower young children of all types to want to be successful. I am committed to creating a classroom culture where high expectations are set and most importantly constantly communicated to students. I have the ability to lead and differentiate engaging lessons where the diverse learning needs of all students are supported. I am a teacher that believes high academic expectations will be met when lessons are presented in a way that suits all learning styles. I use classroom management strategies to set students up for success.
Towson University is committed to academic excellence by providing an environment that fosters appreciation for diversity and where creativity and critical thinking are honed for success. The three colleges I have chosen to apply to are Hinds Community College Vicksburg-Warren Campus, Alcorn State University, and Copiah-Lincoln Community College. The reasons I have selected these three colleges are based on location, financially feasible and great reviews I have heard from others about their own personal experience or had a family member who attended one of these colleges. I have a handicap Uncle that I help take care of so I need to be close home in order to help my mother. I have talked with mother and a few friends about my interest and goals and I have their complete support in my endeavors. Also I received great reviews on these colleges from other people and this is how I chose the three schools that will meet my
Central Christian College administrative team and staff, thank you for considering me a candidate for the program where I can still attend college, even though my high school grade point average was not where it should have been. I appreciated it beyond words. This is a huge blessing to me, as I have been putting off school for far too long.
A true scholar is one who is able to extract from a learning experience, a holistic and well-rounded interpretation and a world view. Enrollment at GCU, presents the student with an opportunity to pursue that ideal. With the embodiment of the four pillars offered; “academic advancement, Christian camaraderie, extracurricular excellence and wellness and well-being”, (Grand Canyon University, n.d.), one is given the best opportunity to become an even more well-rounded individual. This is what makes the difference by comparison to a non-faith-based university; a belief and a system that operates on the premise that a “quality education coexists with faith in the 21st century” (Grand Canyon University, n.d.). Here, there is a focus on delving
The Wayne State University School of Medicine has become a top choice medical school for myself due to their focuses on leadership in medicine, community mentoring and outreach, and service based learning. Centered within the urban and evolving city of Detroit, the Wayne State University School of Medicine affords its students the chance to receive their education in, and provide service within, a very rich and diverse patient population. Being immersed within, experiencing, and understanding the diversities of others allows for students and professionals alike to find their identities, meanings, and purposes through connections with people in all walks of life. In this way, Wayne State has the ability to offer its medical students an unparalleled
It is a new chapter in my life being a first generation college student in which I'm having mix emotions of nervousness and excitement. I have this amazing opportunity to become independent and focus on my goals. San Francisco State has many organizations, clubs, and activities that I can involve in and wonderful people on campus. I imagine college to be an amazing experience in which I can learn who I am and I expect to meet wonderful people.
I would like to start off this letter of appeal by thanking you for the opportunity to explain my past mistakes and outline my plans for improvement in upcoming semesters.
Education is the often touted as the key to reducing socioeconomic inequality in today's society, but recent studies suggest that the education systems in the California may not be effective in serving its community college students. The California community college system supports 2.1 million students throughout California's 113 institutions (CCC Key Facts). According to a 2011 study conducted by California State University, Sacramento, 48% of community college students complete a degree/credential within 6 years. Specifically in 2009, the San Francisco Bay Area had only 7% of community college students being able to graduate within 2 years (Figure 16, Moore). These low completion rates reflect
How would I use my unique talents or abilities to address a school or community issue? I as of now am the class president of my 7th grade, Hastings Middle School class. In ways to make my school better, I always attend school officer meetings, and listen to my peer’s wishes and hopes. However, one thing I have learned is the fact that you can only do so much for your school realistically. For example, as of writing this, my school has banned water bottle flipping. Water bottle flipping is something with enough work and dedication, I can change. An example to what I can’t change are school lunches. The school already has a certain food supplier, certain food-related staff, and certain menus. To try to change this would be to disrupt many parts
After moving into Concordia College on August 21st of 2015, many things in my life have changed. Some of these things include: becoming a college student, living on my own, changing my habits, and becoming more independent. These changes have been for the better and is helping to develop me into a young man.
I’m interested in Honors College because of the unique courses that it offers its students. Courses such as Making the Human and Gutenburg Galaxy differ from the typical classes offered at other universities. They don’t just focus on one subject but instead branch off to touch on various topics. In preference to long lectures and note-taking, classes provide students outside experience with oversea studies such as in Venice, Italy where the city itself is at their disposal to learn from. It is these courses and their accompanied opportunities that sparked my interest in Purdue’s Honors College. This persuaded me to research more in depth about the various activities and goals of the university. Honors’ courses require students to think broader and deeper than in a typical class where
