An old English poem “Beowulf” written by Anonymous, told by the Anglo-saxons for centuries. Has been transformed into a movie ,there are many versions and all are different in their own ways. (Gunnarsson "Beowulf & Grendel") King Hrothgar is distinguishably characterized with scarce resemblance to (Zemeckis “Beowulf”) Hrothgar portrays human emotions in the first film “Beowulf 2005”, he shows sorrow for his soldiers or men that are being killed by Grendel, he also chose not to kill Grendel when he was a child. In the second film the animated one “Beowulf 2008” The King has a stoic type of personality , he puts his soldiers and danes in harmful situations, and when they get killed he doesn’t bother or show any concern. Hrothgar in the second animated film “Beowulf 2008"is shown as self-centered and weak, he commits suicide for no explanation and leaves the kingdom with Beowulf. In both films the King appears to be a coward, and has other people such as Beowulf attempt to kill Grendel. Therefore there are clearly differences in the personalities of each actor /character in each film known as Hrothgar. …show more content…
Although Grendel attacks the king’s soldiers because of revenge because Hrothgar killed his father when Grendel was young in the first film “Beowulf 2005”. Grendel attacks the king’s castle because of the loud disturbances, the sound waves travel to Grendel’s cave and harm his ears. In this movie Grendel is not just a troll but is both a sea monster’s son and Hrothgar’s. In the other film Grendel is portrayed as a just a troll, with a troll father and a sea monster mother, Grendel also has a son. As visibly shown the life story of Hrothgar in each films is diverse from one another and in both movies the King is

Like Beowulf’s dad, a famous soldier known far, and leader of many men. The Danes now see why Beowulf is such a fearless warrior. In Beowulf, the hero decides to fight without a weapon for three reasons he wants to be glorious, he is fearless, wanted to help the people of noble place and he wants to honor his people. Beowulf faces many conflicts fighting these dangerous monsters, but manages to defeat Grendel and his mother.
The poem Beowulf, written by an unknown Anglo-Saxon poet and the movie script, written by Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary. The story is about a Man named Beowulf, who becomes a hero to his town Heorot, by defeating a monster named Grendel. He is later named King of Geats, because of his braveness and loyalty to his people. After about fifty years of ruling, a dragon threatens the town’s people. Beowulf and his servant, Wiglaf, set off to defeat this dragon. While he did succeed to kill it, sadly Beowulf dies in the process. In the poem versus the movie, Beowulf shows different character traits throughout the story. Heroism, loyalty, and bravery all differ from the poem to the movie. The audience will perceive Beowulf as a completely different person if only looking at one of the two pieces.
In the book as well as the movie Beowulf brings fourteen men to the land of the Danes and defeats Grendel. The first main difference is that in the book Grendel’s mother only kills one Dane, Aeschere. In the movie Grendel’s mother slays all of Beowulf’s men besides Wiglaf. At this time in the book Wiglaf is not present with Beowulf and his men, but only at the final battle against the dragon. In both the book and the movie Beowulf detaches Grendel’s arm and his mother returns to the hall for revenge. In the book Beowulf immediately follows Grendel’s mother to the underwater lair, but contrastingly in the movie Beowulf would have no knowledge of Grendel’s mother unless Hrothgar would not have told him. Beowulf kills Grendel’s mother and returns to Geatland to rule in the book, however in the movie Beowulf lies about killing Grendel’s mother and stays to rule in Denmark. Just as Beowulf brought Grendel’s head back in the book, he also did so in the movie. The book does not mention that Hrothgar was the son of Grendel or that Beowulf was the father of the dragon. In the book as well as the movie Beowulf defeats the dragon and dies as the hero of the epic even though he did it in a different way at a different place. The concluding difference includes Beowulf’s funeral. The book displays his funeral as a burial near the coast of the sea, but conversely in the movie his body is put on a burning ship sent out into the
Beowulf is one of the oldest poems in history, it was originally written in Anglo-Saxon, and it was told orally with many literary devices so it could be remembered throughout generations. It shows what their society was based on back in the Anglo-Saxon era. Although throughout history the poem has been changed to fit our modern day society. For example, having different values and morals and how we look at religion has all changed. In the Beowulf poem and movie there are many similarities and differences in Religion, Characterization, and Morals it highlights the value and beliefs of each society.
A. To avenge her son's death, Grendel's mother comes to Herot and kills a warrior who happens to be Hrothgar's closest friend.
These pieces of literature, how different they may seem, are relatively alike. First and foremost, they are alike in the ways of how they present their ruler. In Beowulf, King Hrothgar is wise as he gives his sermon to Beowulf.
Likewise, the difference was gold. In the book Beowulf was rich. Back in those days when you were pouring with gold you were a good warrior. A good warrior could pay for a good army to win fights. In the book gold was not important, it was about Glory.
While Beowulf has not defeated Grendel yet, Hrothgar warmly welcomes Beowulf and makes him as comfortable as possible to prepare his fight with Grendel, because Hrothgar understands clearly that without Beowulf’s help, he cannot protect his people.
Someone who is dearly admired or idealized for their courage and outstanding achievements or their noble qualities is what is said to be a hero today. Hero’s in today’s world have many qualities, such as, courage, selflessness, humility, patience, and a care/concern or kindness for others. When comparing both Dante the pilgrim’s character qualities to Beowulf’s character qualities, Beowulf comes out on top being the most like today’s modern heroes.
John Gardner’s story of Grendel and the original poem of Beowulf have many literary similarities, as well as many differences. Each story is composed of archetypal characters, Anglo-Saxon values, and different aspects of viking life. Grendel is told from the perspective of a “beast from hell” as he is referred to as in the story of Beowulf, a brave hero. Beowulf is told from a human point of view, through the eyes of the glorious knight himself. In each story, the tone that the author uses is astoundingly different from the other, and gives the story its own personality. Hrothgar and his men are interesting to compare to each other in each book, as they are spoken of in different ways, depending on whose point of view the story is being told from.
Beowulf and Hrothgar are both great kings with responsibility to take care their people. Beowulf is a great king because there has been peace and prosperity for fifty years in his village when he became king. Hrothgar is a good king because he created the mead-hall and became successful, also implying that he had wealth. They both have experiences in combat. Hrothgar has responsibility for his people, while beowulf just worried about the glory and fame.
While, on the poem, he returns to his homeland in Geats and becomes a king, but on the film, Hrohtgar rewards him to be a king of Heorot and also marry with Hrohtgar’s wife (eventough on the poem, this part is not coming up with). In other case, a representation of Grendel in the poem and the film has a bit differences. Grendel ,in the film form, comes up to Heorot and kill almost people in the hall, but on the poem form, Grendel watches Beowulf as Hrothgar’s coast guard and kill almost people in the hall slowly. The differences also in the representation of Beowulf who is fighting with Grendel’s mother. The scene on the film shows that Beowulf is not killing Grendel’s mother, but he kisses Grendel’s mother when he follows Grendel’s mother till her lair.
Robert Zemeckis directed the animated epic Beowulf based on the Anglo-Saxon poem of the same name in 2007. Both film and poem follow the life of Geatish hero Beowulf and his battles before and during his reign as king, which ultimately lead to his demise. The characters’ flaws, the role of women, and the importance of family relationships are all significantly different in the movie which in turn shows the differences in values in Anglo-Saxon and American societies.
