At the onset of the most recent damage from Hurricane Harvey, I begin a discussion with a close friend about how I filled all these hurricanes happening around us. Most people believe that the recent hurricanes are results of climate change including the friend I had to discussion with. We delved into this conversation because I began explaining to him that I believed that America was being punished for its sins against Christ. He quickly dismissed me as a religious lunatic. Nevertheless, I pressed forward and explain to him my beliefs and how they provided me an example and how to live. There was a difficulty in meshing his scientific beliefs and my scientific beliefs. Scientific beliefs I have learned as a child that are reflection of how
August 25, 2017 Hurricane Harvey hit the coast of Texas with absolute power. It was originally predicted that it would not surpass category 1, the elements combined and made Harvey extremely vicious. It hit the most populated areas on the United States becoming one of the most destructive. People did not have enough time to properly prepare for the unpredicted devastation ahead. However, the government and the people responded with strong efforts. Let’s start with the federal department. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (which is referred to as FEMA), with its government accomplices mobilized a work force and with many assets to help states affected. About 21,000 government assets were sent to help out during the vicious Tropical Storm. A lot of people sought refuge during the storm and the Federal government gave them many places to stay for example many government owned sites were converted refuge sites for the victims. The U.S coast guard played a huge role to aid victims. Thousands of coast guards were deployed in support of the relief efforts. They evacuated victims through government transport such as helicopters and big vehicles that could travel through the flooding. They are also opened various docks and waterways within Brownsville, Kentucky without any restrictions to the public. FEMA provided thousands of meals, medical and household items. Fema also paid rent for the victim’s short-term housing. Other ongoing Federal
Hurricanes Harvey and Irma have been some of the few drastic weather cases in America in the year of 2017. Though many agree with this fact, many struggle with the ideas as to why this phenomenon happened and what could have been prevented. Some individuals like Michael E. Mann believe that climate change is the problem; others like Alan Reynolds completely disagree. Michael E. Mann, author of the article "It’s a fact: climate change made Hurricane Harvey more deadly", discusses why Hurricane Harvey was far deadlier due to the human cause of climate change. Alan Reynolds dismisses Mann 's claim in his article "Don 't Blame Hurricane Irma and Harvey on Climate Change" and insists that climate change is not the reason for the high impacts
Hurricane Harvey left many people in despair. Houston is flooded and people have to stay on roofs and in boots. The mayor told the residents of Houston not to leave, which is wrong because lots of them could have died. The Federal emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is a group that helps these natural causes. Donald Trump tweeted about going to Texas and visiting but he’s not doing anything about it. Hurricane Harvey has been the fiercest Hurricane after Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Harvey hit Texas on Friday night and it kept raining all weekend. On Saturday Hurricane Harvey weakened and the hurricane became a tropical storm.
On August 17, 2017, a tropical storm/hurricane cyclone swept through southeast Houston, TX and southwest Louisiana destroying everything in its path. This category 4 large swirling storm known as Hurricane Harvey, is the costliest tropical storm on record in approximately 2 billion dollars of damage. It lasted until September 2, 2017, and showered 60 inches of rain, destroying and damaging 150,000 structures, and killing 82 people. With wind. upward of 130 miles per hours, some 30,000 people were left homeless to find shelter, food, and clothing. People's lives in an instant changed, schools were closed down, people were left with no work because businesses had closed or were destroyed. Some people were looting businesses and stealing from evacuated
Natural disasters have costed the government a massive amount in the past years. Hurricanes such as Katrina left people in Florida, Haiti, Louisiana and other parts of the gulf feeling helpless. Katrina ravaged states along the coast of the gulf making it the most expensive damage from a natural disaster, 108 billion dollars. However, in 2017, the disasters required over three hundred and ten billion dollars for repairs (Bowden, 2017). How will this be paid for? Will the government have to cut budgets from other programs? Over five natural disasters have struck the United States and surrounding countries this year. These disasters consisted of hurricanes, mudslides, wildfires, flooding, and earthquakes. Hurricane Harvey hit approximately “number” major cities in
Hurricane Harvey was the costliest tropical cyclone on record, a lot of things were destroyed, but Harvey, primarily from widespread flooding in the Houston metropolitan area. The hurricane affected Texas, Louisiana, Belize, Nicaragua, Honduras, Eastern United States & more. Many people had to leave or move their family to a different location due to the hurricane. Hurricane Harvey did damage to things other than homes. This natural disaster was the first major hurricane to strike south texas since Celia in 1970.
My parents have quite the history of not getting along financially. After their divorce in 2005, it was almost impossible to come to an agreement on who would pay for necessities. It took a vast amount of time before a stalemate was reached between the two. After settling into a new home, things finally began to cool down, and arrangements were made to alleviate monetary stress. More recently, my step-father has unfortunately lost his job due to the effects of Hurricane Harvey, making it only more challenging to get through financially. Paying for college with the tight funds that my parents have will make my trip to College Station difficult, but indubitably
The most interesting pieces of information I learned from the article were all regarding how
It was tragic when hurricane harvey struck. Chaos everywhere and most were left stranded on their rooftops of their houses.Harvey is now a tropical depression, destroying thousands of homes with winds of 35 mph. At least 37 people have been confirmed dead in Hurricane Harvey's aftermath.
Drivers lined up at gas pumps in parts of Texas Thursday as more stations ran out of gas and prices rose steeply in response to Hurricane Harvey's impact on Gulf Coast refineries.
What happened on hurricane Harvey was a very sad discovery when over 3,000 people died that day. Whenever Taylor Swift donating to the Houston Food Bank for people to have food and whatever else they needed to help survivors. Taylor is one of the latest Hollywood stars to put as much money into those pockets in need of surviving in Texas. Then she made a sizable donation to the Houston food Bank in the honor of her mother whose name is Andrea, who attended University of Houston. She helped those people in hurricane Harvey by donating to the Houston food Bank for those in Texas so that they can have food.
My last class was on social media and marketing and our group had to come up with a SMMP(Social Media Marketing Plan) for the museum on campus. Since Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and others, like Snapchat, are free you can utilize them as much as possible in order to spread the word on a tight budget. Since Hurricane Harvey is so recent you may be able to persuade more people to volunteer because their emotional state is still focused. This is similar to the 911 time period when people seemed to be more united. Since the agenda-setting theory is based on the media making us become followers of persuasion, I think using these media platforms will help you on your quest to advertise on a small budget and reach those who are more likely to be
This week has been a life time experience for me .I had an opportunity to go to Houston Texas and port author for the Hurricane Harvey relief project. One the first day we traveled on a charter bus for 12 hours. On the way there we stopped at Southern University. The SGA Vice President Tariq Downward a junior majoring in Business gave us a tour an around campus .Then I began taken pictures and capture ding footage of the campus. Then Downward showed us where the student union building was and southern university student union have a bowling alley, a barbershop in there and a couple restaurants in there like Burger King, chick-fil-a, and China express. The Students gave us a wonderful warm welcoming. Southern university SGA president called our SGA president Matisse Mann and told him he will be in the student
This past summer, when Hurricane Harvey struck my community, I learned that when individuals come together, they can accomplish so much more than when alone. A record amount of rainfall from this storm caused flooding beyond what I have ever witnessed, which in turn destroyed many houses. While I was very lucky to not sustain any water damage in my home, one of my closest friends, Ashleigh, was not. Recognizing a possible need, I asked if her family needed any assistance stripping her soaked carpet or tearing out drywall (which is necessary in order to prevent the damage from spreading). She replied almost immediately, saying to come as soon as it was safely possible and to bring as many helpers as I could. I assembled a group of peers and
In the article "Harvey, the Storm that Human Helped Cause", the author David Leonhardt displays the miserable scene of southeast Texas after the severe storm, Harvey. The article points out that the storm has a direct correlation with the climate change straightforward and illustrates the thesis statement basing on the situation of Harvey (Leonhardt par.3). Providing abundant evidence such as the foreshadowing of the storm, caused by anomaly temperature, Mr. Leonhardt claims that the catastrophe was a result of human activity (par.17). Nevertheless, scientists try to avoid this topic generally for political reasons so the author declares that people should discern the relationship between climate
