The hydra constellation is what I will be writing about today. It measure 1,303 square degrees and also has a length of over 1,000 degrees. I feel it is the most distinguishable constellation because of its size. That's also why I choose the hydra to write about. Out of 88 constellations it is the largest. The hydra constellation also contains three Messier objects, several globular clusters and many smaller galaxies. The sea serpent is also another name for the hydra constellation.
My favorite creation myth about the hydra constellation is the one involving Apollo. One day Apollo was thirty and told a crow to fetch him some water in his cup. The crow went as told but was distracted by a feast he saw nearby. When the crow finally came back Apollo was

Apollo knew the crow was lying. Angrily, Apollo took the crow, the cup and the water serpent and cast them into the sky. The crow then became the corvus constellation, the cup became the crater constellation and the sea serpent became the hydra constellation.
One day a beautiful young woman was bathing at the edge of the sea. She always came to the same spot behind her cottage. It had always reminded her of her handsome husband that had passed away. It was the 5 year anniversary of her husbands death and the weather matched her mood. She knew she should have stayed home with the warm fire burning but she had to come to the seaside, it was calling to her as usual. As she approached the water she saw a glimmer of something out of the corner of her eye. She had always felt that the sea spoke to her but today was different. She turned to go back to her cottage and the warmth when she felt something on her feet. As she looked down she saw the sea serpent starting to wrap around her ankles. She gently tried to untangle the sea serpent figuring it was just confusing her for food. The sea serpent just started to wrap tighter and tighter. the young woman tried again, this time talking gently also to the sea
I've picked the constellation, Aquarius, as my topic for this assignment. I chose this star constellation because my sign is Aquarius, therefore I thought it would be fun and entertaining to do for the project and I would also love to learn more about my sign. The Aquarius is located in the Southern Hemisphere and is one of the oldest recorded constellation of the Zodiac. It is a very large constellation; it spreads out over 980 square degrees and it is the 10th largest constellation in the sky. There aren't many bright stars in the sky, so it's hard to see without a telescope in handy, but you can try and see if you can find it with the naked eye! The Aquarius was recorded during the second century by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy. The constellation name means "cup bearer" or "water bearer" in the Latin language. The
I have chosen to use the constellation Andromeda. I chose it, because I did not know much about it and enjoyed doing a bit of research over this particular constellation. The constellation Andromeda was first catalogued by Ptolemy. It’s the nineteenth biggest constellation and the brightest start is Alpheratz.
The word Constellation means “set with stars” which comes from a latin term. Most constellation names are latin in origin, which is the language of Ancient Rome. They named these constellations something similar to their gods, or something that represents their god. Some of the names that the constellations were given were Aquarius, Aquila ( the Eagle), Canis Major ( the great dog), Leo ( the lion), and Perseus ( the Hero). There are many more constellations, but these are some of them. They also named them from animals that inspired legends, one legend was about Aquarius the eagle. The legend tells how Aquarius served Zeus by sending messages the the people down below or disguise Zeus whenever he is in trouble with Hera his wife. Some of the names that the constellations were given were Aquarius, Aquila ( the Eagle), Canis Major ( the great dog), Leo ( the lion), and Perseus ( the Hero). There are 88 constellations in the night sky. Currently there are 14 women and men, 2 insects, 19 land creatures and 10 water creatures . There are also 9 birds, 2 centaurs, a dragon and a serpent, a head of hair, a river, and lastly 29 lifeless other constellations. There are 40 to 43 animal constellations in the night sky and 40 to 44 other constellations in the night sky. There are probably more constellations out there, but for now we only have discovered 88 of
The myth of the constellation Capricornus is of Greek origin. This is the mythological story of how the constellation Capricornus was created. The Olympian Gods had battled the Titans and were looking for refuge in Egypt
The Greeks associate the constellation with Pan, the god of nature. Pan helped Zeus fight the Titans to earn his spot in the heavens. He escaped the monster Typhon by jumping into
In Greek mythology, the constellation represents a number of legendary swans. Zeus disguised himself as a swan to rape Leda, which gave birth to the twins Castor and Pollux, the Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra. Orpheus turned into a swan after his murder, and was told that his place in the sky next to his harp. Finally,
There are several creation mythes. The greek version says that the constellation is the representation of the nymph Callisto. Changed into a bear by the god Zeus to hid her from his wife Hera, she has been put into the sky with her son Actas
According to mythology, Orion proclaimed himself the greatest hunter in the world, to the dismay of Hera, wife of Zeus. Hera had a scorpion kill Orion and Zeus put him into the sky as a constellation.
My favorite constellation is the Capricornus constellation. I don't know much about constellations, so this is my favorite mainly because in astrology (and I'm aware it's different from astronomy) my sign is Capricorn. Capricornus is supposed to create the image of a goat with the tail of a fish. This is because Capricorn has this form, and so the constellation is based off of the astrological zodiac.
Constellations are pictures or shapes that ancient people discovered in the night sky. Some of the most popular constellations are the twelve Zodiac signs. Another famous constellation is Orion, or ‘The Hunter’. I chose to write about Orion because personally I love the story of how his constellation came to be. He is one of the main constellations I always notice in the night sky.
In the next part of the assignment the author will create a new myth to describe the constellations place in the
I chose the Orion constellation because after doing some research, I found that the history of this constellation was very interesting. The Orion constellation looks like a man holding a weapon and a dead lion, so it was named after a hunter in Greek mythology. The Orion is located on the celestial equator and it consists of seven stars known as Betelgeuse, Rigel, Bellatrix, Mintaka, Alnilam, Alnitak, and Saiph, but it's brightest stars are Rigel and Betelgeuse. This constellation is most visible between January and March at evening time and can be seen all across the world.
the golden apples as a part of the twelve labors. When the dragon died, the goddess, Hera, made a picture in the sky around the North Pole to honor him. Unlike the Greeks, Romans believed Draco was part of the Giant Titans who fought against the Olympians. During a battle with the goddess of wisdom, Minerva, he was thrust into the sky by the North Pole. No matter which myth you believe, both gave us the fierce constellation we have today.
Throughout the course of our existence, humans have looked to the skies for a multitude of reasons. A couple of them would be something along the lines of religious beliefs or the physical use of the stars as a guide or a compass to bring families home or help discover new territories. The use of constellations have been recorded in Mesopotamian culture that has been dated back to around 4000 B.C. According to a “Constellation History” article by Jim Fuchs “In the 8th century B.C. (800-701). Homer mentioned a few now familiar constellations in his epic poem, the Odyssey. Four hundred years later Eudoxus of Cnidus wrote about 43 constellations.” (Fuch) Ptolemy, another Greek astronomer had created a book called the Almagest which contained a lot of our present day constellations. This book was written in 150 A.D. and contained 48 constellations of those 48, 21 were from the northern constellations and 12 were Zodiacal constellations and 15 from the southern constellations. These constellations consisted of many that are very well known to date such as Bootes, Ursa Major, Ursa Minor, Aries, Cancer, and Taurus. In the following paragraphs we will go over the history of these constellations. After Ptolemy, roughly 1100 years later in Moorish controlled Spain a group of scholars created the famous Arabic astronomy writing of the Alfonsine
Have you ever wondered why you see certain shapes or patterns in the sky formed by stars? Well, these formations are called constellations. There are tons of different constellations that represent different logics of many poets, farmers, and astronomers. Along the years, there have been many different relations that the constellations have to famous myths and stories that are a part of world life. In addition, the constellations are related to zodiac signs, which represent where the sun was in the sky at the exact time and place of a person's birth. Examples of well-known constellations are Bootes, Aquarius, and Ursa Major. These constellations
