The problem of hyper-masculinity with the Greek Community

First and foremost, hyper-masculinity can best be defined as a psychological term for the exaggeration of male stereotypical behavior, such as an emphasis on physical strength, aggression, and sexuality. (Your Dictionary) Men all throughout history have had, like women, gender roles and overall expectations of how to act within society in a way that’s “acceptable”. Through the analysis of hyper-masculinity, I intend to analyze hyper-masculinity within Fraternities through the movie ‘Goat’, directed by Andrew Neel. Overall, I plan to provide evidence that shows that we must reconstruct what it means to be a man in society, for the overall betterment of society. First, I will provide background on male gendered roles throughout history, I will then connect those gendered roles to the development and progression of my masculinity, and lastly analyze the movie “Goat” directed by Andrew Neel through a hyper-masculine lens.

Today men and women have equal roles in the modern family. In the past, men were the breadwinners in the family while women did household chores and took care of the children. At the present time both men and women work to earn money and the husband is often times able to stay home and assume the “gender role” of the woman. Although gender roles are in the past today there is still a lot people that continue to reinforce gendered stereotypes unknowingly both at home and in the work force. In the work force, for example, work where physically-tough activities are performed, such as lifting heavy equipment’s or working in industrial plants, males are preferred (Kidd). So, some jobs still have a preference which proves that gendered roles are still present
