Today in class I learned a lot about problem solving and how to have good problem solving skills. Having good problem solving skills is an important skill every single person should have. We run into problems every day that we need to be able to figure out on our own. I wouldn’t say I am a bad problem solver, but I would definitely say that my problem solving skills could improve. In order to have good problem solving skills, you need to have good critical thinking skills as well. Today in class, I learned the seven components that make up good critical thinking skills. Learning about problem solving is going to help me significantly if I correctly follow the four major steps. With that said, these four steps are defining the problem; devise (gather and interpret information); implement a plan of action; and evaluate the plan for effectiveness. The step I struggle with the most is evaluating the plan for effectiveness. I always know how I can solve the problem, but it isn’t always the most effective way to go about it, and then I am stuck. So, learning about how to solve a problem the most effective way is really going to help me out every day. Currently, I am trying to solve all these problems that are going to affect my future, either negatively or positively. With that said, I also learned seven strategies to problem solving. These seven strategies are going to help me tremendously right now and I can’t wait to put them to work and, hopefully, I will be less stressed with all of these decisions if I use these strategies correctly. The seven problem solving strategies I learned today are keeping a positive attitude; ask questions; use creativity; pay attention to detail; see all sides of the issue; remember that persistence pays off; and to use reasoning. If I keep all these strategies in mind, solving all the problems I have right now will not be as bad and they may even come easier. Critical thinking has an important role in learning and development because if properly executed it allows me to see the entire situation instead of the individual task. I plan to take the necessary actions to determine the task with open eyes and an unbiased approach. Remembering the facts about the situation can help in resolving the issue. Understanding by reiterating the problem can help me further comprehend. Applying then analyzing the tasks and or situations so I can prepare the steps to come to the evaluation. I can see if the resources are accurate and thorough. The last thing I should be able to do to assure my critical thinking skills are complete is a form of creating. I take all the information of this situation, and use it in my final resolution. These steps are crucial in the ability to think clearly and not be clouded by biased information.

After learning studying the technics from Unit 2 on improving critical thinking skills, I feel that I have devised a plan to help me through this process. The steps in the lesson that include using wasted time and asking specific questions, planning to handle one problem per day, and internalize intellectual standards and having clarity and understanding about devising a game plan has helped me put the changes into action. Keeping a journal and trying to practice intellectual strategies are all part of my plan to improve my thinking.
Many different meanings come to mind when I think of critical thinking. Coming from a family full of educators, principals, and attorneys, I often would hear debates between my family members discussing ways to educate and motivate their students. Many different views and positions were established. I began to develop ideas from my family members and understood the possible relationships and differences that emerged between them.
